Chapter 143

Chapter 143
“What do you mean? Where do you plan to go?” Alpha Charles asked, staring at his daughter, who had just told them that she needed a break, and wanted to go on a journey.

“Honestly, I don't know yet. I was hoping you could help me speak to maybe one of your trusted friends. Maybe I can just stay there for a while.” Veronica replied.

“And how long are we talking about?” Her father inquired.

Veronica hesitated. “About a year or more than that.” She replied, squinting as she waited for her parents’ reaction.

“What!” Her parents exclaimed. “Why would you want to leave for that long?” They chorused.

“I just need a short break.” Veronica answered.

“That is definitely not ‘short’.” Her father pointed out.

“Hmmmmm…” Luna Isabella sighed. “I'm really worried about you, Veronica. You look pale and you're not telling us anything. What is the matter, darling?”

“It’s nothing serious, mum. I just need to go somewhere.” Veronica replied.

“Is this about Alpha Beck?” Her father asked, and she remained quiet, avoiding their gaze.

They had heard what happened between Veronica and Beck from Ben, and after the night with Beck, Veronica had also corroborated the story, leaving no information out. She also told them what transpired between them that night, telling them that she was drunk and it was only a spur of the moment.

“If this is about him, I think you should calm down and take a moment to at least hear him out. That young man has been coming here every single week, despite the long distance from his pack to this place, for the past six weeks, yet you've not agreed to see him.” He spoke further.

“I understand that a lot happened between you both in the past, and he really hurt you, but you need to talk to him. If you no longer want to see him, let him know.”

“Exactly. Let him know, so he will stop bothering himself coming here all the time.” Her mum said, in agreement. “Or do you need help?” She asked, and Veronica looked in her direction.

“If you need help, let me know. I'll gladly help you tell him that you no longer want to have anything to do with him. Should I help you?” She pressed, but Veronica couldn't answer.

“Just look at you, you can't even respond. We both know you still love him. Why then are you giving yourself and him a hard time?” She asked, concerned.

“I went through a lot, mum. And it was all because of him!” She said, sharply.

“Oh, would you have preferred to still be there, treated like an omega? Not knowing who you really are? Is that what you prefer?” Her mother asked in response.

“Of course not.” Veronica answered, shaking her head.

“So, why are you still mad then?” Her mum asked. “He has come back to his senses and apologized to you countlessly but you still do not want to listen to him. Even his family has come to beg you, but you blatantly refused to see them.” She continued.

“They are only coming now because they know who I am. If I was still the omega they thought I was years ago, would they have been coming to beg me to forgive them?” Veronica said, and her parents knew she was still hurting.

“Maybe you should let him go then, and move on.” Her mum suddenly suggested, and Veronica’s eyes widened in surprise. “Yes, I think that will be the perfect solution.” Her mother affirmed, shrugging.

“Or do you want to keep punishing him without having any plans to forgive him eventually?” Her mother asked, and she looked away.

Her father then spoke up, “We understand that you're hurting, but you also need to understand that if everything didn't happen the way it did in the past, you wouldn't have been here by now. You would have settled for less, not knowing the capacity that the real YOU has.”

Veronica sighed. “They shouldn't have treated me badly.” She grumbled, and her parents sighed, shaking their heads.

“Don't worry we're not going to force you to do what you do not want to do. Do whatever seems right to you, and we'll always support you.” Luna Isabella said, and pulled her into her embrace.

“Thank you for understanding.” Veronica muttered, thankfully.

“Well, I have a distant cousin in the Blood Moon Pack. He is the Alpha of the pack. I'll speak to him about this later, and I'll let you know what he says.” Her father said out loud.

Veronica sighed with a long face.

“What is it?” Her father asked, noticing her long face.

“Can't you call him right now?” She asked, her shoulders drooping low.

“Why are you in so much of a hurry?” Her father asked, unable to understand why she was in so much hurry to leave.

“If I didn't know better, I would think you're running away from a certain crime.” He said jokingly, raising his eyebrows, and they all laughed.

“The thing is I just want to leave before Beck comes back here again. I'm afraid that if he keeps coming here, I might just crack without thinking deeply about it.” She answered calmly, and her parents sighed, understanding what she meant.

“It's okay. Excuse me, I need to make a call.” He picked up his phone, and dialled a particular number. As it rang, he excused himself, and stepped to a corner to speak to his cousin.

“Do you think what you're trying to do is a good idea?” Her mum asked as her father stepped away.

“Yes, mum. It is. I just need to do this right now for my sanity.” She answered, snuggling into her mother's arms.

“If that's what you want. That's okay.” Her mum said, giving her a peck on her forehead.

Soon enough, her father walked back to them, with an unreadable expression.

Veronica sat up, her eyes fixed on him, waiting in anticipation for his response.

“What did he say?” Luna Isabella asked him.

“Yes, dad. What did he say?” Veronica asked, expectantly.

“He said there's no problem. You're always welcome.”

“Yess…” Veronica sighed and smiled in excitement. “Seeing your expression, I was scared at first.” She said, with smiles.

“I intentionally wanted to scare you.” He replied, laughing.

Veronica soon sprung to her feet. “I need to pack my things.”

Her parents were surprised, “So quick?”

“Yes, so quick.” She repeated and began to waltz away.

“So when next he comes asking for you, what do we tell him?” Her mother asked, and Veronica stopped in her tracks.

“Just tell him I travelled far away.” Veronica said, after thinking for a while.

“So you want us to lie to him?” She asked her.

“Not exactly.” She walked back to them, and sat beside her mum. “Just don't tell him where I went, please. Can you do that for me?” She pleaded, her eyes pleading too.

“I just need a different environment, away from him. Somewhere I can process my thoughts. If I keep staying here, he won't stop coming here.” She added.

“I understand. We're only allowing you out of sight because we are sure that you now know the extent of the power you possess, and can control it, saving yourself if worst comes to worst.” Her dad said, and she nodded.

“Don't worry, I've told him not to call any attention to you. No one will know who you really are. That way, you'll be safe from enemies and shielded from Beck too.” He added and hearing what her father said, she was so glad.

“Thank you so much, dad.” She sprung up from beside her mum, and gave her dad a hug of gratitude.

“Let's just hope he doesn't have people over there.” He suddenly added, and Veronica’s eyes widened.

“It's possible, but we'll be positive and hope that you're safe there.” He said, lightening the mood.

“But as soon as we sense any threat, we’ll request that you be brought back immediately.” He added, and she nodded in agreement.

“Just ensure you're safe, and you speak to us every day, so we won't be worried. Is that clear?”

“Yes. I will make sure I do so.” She answered with a big smile, and left to pack her things.

Two weeks into her new life at the Blood Moon Pack, Veronica began to feel off. Initially, she blamed it on the lingering stress of her journey, but as the days passed and the fatigue persisted, even after she had taken enough time to rest, she couldn't shake off the feeling that something was definitely amiss.

She began to have weird thoughts about certain possibilities which crept into her mind, refusing to be ignored. Finally, curiosity got the better of her, and just like her mum had advised, she decided to take a test.

Sitting in the restroom, her heart racing with anticipation, she stared at the test strip in her hand. The result glared back at her, its bold letters leaving no room for doubt: “PREGNANT”.
