Traitor in the Ranks

"Poison!" Serena shouted, knocking the water jug from Reid's hands just as he was about to drink. The clay jug broke on the ground, spilling dark water that hissed when it touched the dirt. The smell of rotten eggs filled the air.

Reid jumped back, eyes wide with shock. "What the—"

"Don't touch it," Caleb warned, running to Serena's side. His heart was still raw from the broken link with Tobias, a constant ache in his chest that hadn't faded in the three days since their escape from Victor and Isabel's cottage. "That water would have killed you in seconds."

The wounded warriors lying on makeshift beds around the cave stirred nervously. After leaving Blackwater Marsh with Isabel and the ancient book, they'd found the remaining Crimson Fang members hiding in these caves. Lucian had managed to rescue some of his pack, but many were hurt, and Tobias was still missing.

"All the supplies for the wounded are poisoned," Serena said, her voice shaking. "I noticed the smell when I was checking the bandages. Someone put this stuff in everything — the water, the medicine, even the food."

Lucian emerged at the cave entrance, his face grim. "Everyone out," he ordered. "Now. We need to check everything."

Chaos erupted as healthy wolves helped move the hurt outside. Caleb stood in the middle of it all, his mind racing. This wasn't a random act. Someone inside their group had done this.

"Someone betrayed us," Aurora whispered, appearing at his side. She and Caleb had been training with Isabel each morning, learning to control their Bondspeaker powers. "But who?"

Caleb looked around at the scared faces of the pack. Crimson Fang wolves mixed with the few Moonshadow rebels who'd joined them after refusing Victor. Trust was already thin between them.

"I don't know," Caleb said. "But I'm going to find out."

Outside, Lucian had everyone gather in a circle. His face was hard with anger, but Caleb could feel the fear beneath it. Without Tobias, Lucian seemed only half himself.

"Someone tried to poison our wounded," Lucian said, his voice cutting through the worried whispers. "Someone among us is working for Victor."

Eyes instantly turned to the small group of Moonshadow rebels. They shifted awkwardly under the suspicious glares.

"It wasn't us!" Elena, their leader, argued. "We left Victor because we hate what he's become!"

"Why should we believe you?" Reid growled. "Your pack tortured our scouts last month!"

"That wasn't us!"

More charges flew back and forth. Caleb watched as the fragile union began to crack.

"Stop it!" he yelled, stepping into the middle of the circle. Everyone fell silent, shocked by his outburst. "Fighting each other is exactly what Victor wants!"

"Then what do you suggest?" Lucian asked, a bit of his old respect returning to his eyes. "We can't ignore a traitor in our midst."

Caleb took a deep breath. Since the bond with Tobias had broken, he'd felt adrift, lost. But now, seeing his pack about to tear itself apart, something hardened inside him.

"I can find the traitor," he said. "My Bondspeaker abilities — I can see the pack bonds. If someone's loyalty lies elsewhere, I'll be able to tell."

Whispers spread through the crowd. Isabel stepped forward, her blue eyes sharp.

"It's possible," she said. "But using your power this way will be painful. You'll feel everything they feel — their fear, their guilt, their reasons."

"I don't care," Caleb said. "I have to try."

Isabel nodded. "Then we'll begin now."

They gathered everyone in the main cave, sitting in a wide circle. Isabel guided Caleb to the center and put her hands on his shoulders.

"Close your eyes," she directed. "Focus on the threads connecting everyone. Don't try to see with your eyes — see with your heart."

Caleb closed his eyes. At first, there was only darkness. Then, slowly, he began to see them — thin golden threads linking each person to those they cared about. Lucian's threads were the brightest, spreading to nearly everyone in the pack. The Moonshadow rebels had fewer connections, but they were getting stronger each day.

"Look for a thread that pulls away," Isabel whispered. "One that reaches beyond our group."

Caleb turned slowly, examining each face. Most had ties that stayed within the circle. But then he saw it — a dark red thread stretching from one wolf toward the forest, pulsing with fear and guilt.

He opened his eyes and found himself looking at Marcus, a quiet Crimson Fang wolf who'd been with the pack for years.

"It's you," Caleb said softly.

Marcus leapt to his feet, fear in his eyes. Before he could run, Lucian and Reid grabbed him.

"Traitor!" Reid growled. "I'll tear your throat out!"

"Wait!" Caleb yelled, stumbling forward. The use of his skills had left him dizzy. "There's more to it. I saw his bond — it's not loyalty to Victor. It's fear."

Marcus had stopped fighting, his head hanging in shame.

"Tell them," Caleb pushed. "Tell them why."

Tears streamed down Marcus's face. "Victor has my family," he whispered. "My mate and our pups. He said he'd kill them slowly if I didn't do what he asked."

A heavy silence fell over the cave. Lucian's grip on Marcus eased slightly.

"Why didn't you tell us?" Lucian asked, his voice rough with emotion.

"Victor said he'd know if I told anyone. He has a witch watching me." Marcus looked up, his eyes desperate. "I didn't poison anything, I swear. I just told him where we were hiding. But he wants me to do worse things. I can't—I can't do it anymore."

Caleb felt the truth in his words. The red thread connecting Marcus to his family pulsed with genuine love and fear.

"We should kill him," Reid said coldly. "He can't be trusted."

"No," Caleb said strongly. "That's not the answer."

"Then what is?" Lucian asked. "We can't risk—"

"We rescue his family," Caleb interrupted. "We show everyone that we protect our own, that they can trust us to help them when Victor threatens what they love."

Murmurs ran through the group. Isabel stepped forward, a rare smile on her wrinkled face.

"The boy speaks wisdom," she said. "Victory through compassion, not vengeance. This is the true power of a Bondspeaker."

Lucian looked at Caleb with new respect. "Where are they being held?" he asked Marcus.

"The old hunting lodge at the edge of Moonshadow territory," Marcus answered, hope flickering in his eyes. "Victor keeps hostage families there under guard."

"How many others might be in the same position as you?" Caleb asked gently. "Forced to work against us to save their loved ones?"

Marcus swallowed hard. "Many. Victor takes someone from every family of those he doesn't trust completely."

Caleb turned to Lucian. "This could change everything. If we free the hostages—"

"We might gain allies instead of enemies," Lucian finished. "It's risky, but worth trying."

They spent the rest of the day planning. Marcus gave details about the guards, the schedule changes, the secret entrances he knew of. By dark, they had a plan.

"We leave at dawn," Lucian declared. "A small team — Caleb, Aurora, Reid, and myself. The rest of you stay with Isabel and prepare for wounded."

As the others dispersed to rest, Caleb walked to the mouth of the cave, looking at the stars. The ache of his broken link with Tobias throbbed like an open wound.

"Will this work?" Aurora asked, joining him.

"It has to," Caleb answered. "We need more allies if we're going to find Tobias and stop Victor."

Aurora squeezed his arm. "Get some sleep. Tomorrow will be dangerous."

But sleep wouldn't come. Caleb tossed on his blanket, his mind running with worry. What if Tobias was already dead? What if this rescue mission was a trap?

Near midnight, he gave up and walked outside again. The night was clear and cold. Caleb sat on a rock and closed his eyes, reaching out with his mind, looking for any trace of the link that had broken.

At first, there was nothing. Then, so faint he almost missed it — a flicker. A tiny thread of golden light where there had been only darkness before.

Caleb's eyes flew open, his heart racing. "Tobias?" he whispered.

The bond flickered again, stronger this time. With it came a flash of pictures — dark walls, the smell of blood, and Victor's smiling face.

Tobias was living. But he wasn't alone.

Caleb staggered to his feet, running back toward the cave. He had to tell Lucian. Their rescue mission just became much more important.

Before he could reach the door, a searing pain shot through his head. He fell to his knees, clutching his temples as more images flooded his mind — Tobias chained to a wall, his body covered in shadow marks that crawled across his skin like living things. Victor standing over him with a knife. And behind Victor, a hooded person with glowing eyes.

"The hostages are bait," Tobias's voice whispered in his mind. "Don't come. It's a trap."

The connection broke, leaving Caleb gasping on the ground. Blood dripped from his nose, and his vision swam with dark spots.

"Caleb!" Lucian's voice seemed far away. "What happened?"

"Tobias," Caleb managed to say before darkness took him. "Victor has Tobias."
