The Hostage Camp
The arrow zipped past Caleb's ear, missing him by an inch before thudding into the tree behind him. He dropped to the ground, heart racing.
"Get down!" Tobias hissed, pulling Caleb behind a fallen log. More arrows flew overhead, hitting trees and dirt around them.
Caleb could hardly believe Tobias was really here. Just yesterday, he'd been unconscious after the painful image of Tobias in Victor's clutches. Then this morning, Tobias had stumbled into camp, wounded but alive, having somehow fled Victor's prison.
"I told you we shouldn't have come," Tobias muttered, looking over the log at the guards shooting at them from the watchtower. "These wolves are trained to kill."
"We can't leave those families behind," Caleb whispered back. "You saw what it was like in there."
Tobias had detailed the horror of Victor's hostage camp—families kept in cages, children crying for parents, all used as pawns to force their relatives to serve Victor. The thought made Caleb's blood boil.
Their small rescue team was spread around the edge of the camp—Lucian and Reid to the north, Aurora and Thorne to the east, and Caleb and Tobias hiding at the southern edge. The plan was to attack from all sides at midnight, but someone had spotted them early.
"This isn't how it was supposed to go," Caleb said, flinching as another arrow struck nearby.
Tobias gave a sad smile. "Plans rarely survive first contact with the enemy."
A howl cut through the night—Lucian's signal to attack now that they'd been found. Tobias instantly shifted into his wolf form, powerful and sleek despite his recent captivity. Caleb couldn't shift—his skills as a Bondspeaker made it difficult—but he had other strengths now.
"Stay close," Caleb said, feeling the pouch of herbs Isabel had given him. "I'll watch your back."
They ran toward the camp, dodging arrows as guards yelled alerts. Ahead, Caleb could see the first row of cages—crude metal buildings barely big enough for the wolves inside. The sight fueled his drive.
Tobias leapt at the first guard, taking him down without a sound. Caleb used the confusion to reach the nearest cage, where a mother wolf and two small pups huddled together.
"We're here to help," Caleb whispered, studying the lock. It wasn't an ordinary metal lock—strange marks glowed around it, pulsing with dark energy. "Magic," he grumbled.
The female wolf whined anxiously, nudging her pups behind her.
"It's okay," Caleb told her. "I can break this."
Isabel had taught him the basics of magical locks during their training sessions. Caleb pulled out the pouch, sprinkling herbs around the cage door while muttering words that felt strange on his tongue.
Nothing happened.
"Hurry up!" Tobias growled, shifting back to human form to help an injured Reid fight off two guards.
Caleb tried again, his hands shaking. The marks glowed brighter, but the lock remained firmly in place.
Across the camp, howls and shouts filled the air as the rescue team fought with Victor's guards. They were outnumbered, and they couldn't escape without the hostages.
"What's wrong?" Tobias asked, running back to his side.
"The locks," Caleb explained hurriedly. "They're not responding to Isabel's counter-spell."
Tobias studied the glowing marks. "I've seen these before. When Victor held me, he would open cells using his own blood."
"Blood magic," Caleb said, remembering Isabel's words. "Only Victor's blood can open these."
A cry of pain made them both turn. Lucian was surrounded by four guards, fighting fiercely but clearly overpowered.
"Go help him," Caleb urged. "I'll figure this out."
As Tobias raced to help Lucian, Caleb closed his eyes, reaching for the new part of himself he'd found during training—the place where his Bondspeaker abilities lived. He felt the magical locks, dozens of them throughout the camp, all linked by threads of power that led back to Victor.
Isabel had taught him that all magic had flaws. Blood magic was strong but unstable—it relied on connection to the blood giver. If that connection could be broken...
Caleb took a deep breath and pressed his palm against the lock. Instead of trying to break it, he focused on the thread connecting it to Victor. In his mind, he pictured cutting that thread, swapping it with his own.
Pain shot up his arm as the magic resisted. Gritting his teeth, Caleb pushed harder, pouring his own force into the lock. The mother wolf watched with wide, frightened eyes as blood started to drip from Caleb's nose.
"Almost there," he gasped.
With a final surge of effort, Caleb felt the lock's link to Victor snap. The glowing marks flashed, changed from red to blue, and the door swung open.
The mother wolf paused, then quickly ushered her pups out.
"Go to the trees," Caleb told her, pointing to where Kira waited to guide escapees to safety. "Our friends will protect you."
Encouraged by his success, Caleb went to the next cage. Now that he understood the spell, breaking it was easier, though each lock took more of his strength. One by one, cages opened and families fled into the night.
In the middle of the camp, Tobias, Lucian, and the others fought bravely, keeping the guards distracted. But more enemy wolves were coming, drawn by the commotion.
"We need to hurry!" Aurora called, appearing beside Caleb to help an old wolf from his cage.
Caleb had freed nearly twenty cages when he felt it—a sudden rush of rage that wasn't his own. The magical threads he'd been cutting all pulsed at once, and pain burst in his head.
"Victor knows," he gasped, falling to his knees. "He felt me breaking the spells."
Aurora helped him up. "We need to get everyone out now."
Together they worked faster, saving the remaining hostages. Caleb's eyes blurred from exhaustion, but he refused to stop. These dogs had suffered enough.
"That's the last one," Aurora said as a young couple with a tiny pup fled from their cage.
Caleb nodded weakly. "Tell Lucian... time to retreat."
Aurora howled the warning, and the rescue team began to pull back, covering the escaping hostages. Caleb stumbled toward the forest edge, his legs barely holding him.
Halfway there, a familiar voice stopped him cold.
"Impressive work, nephew."
Caleb turned to see Victor standing just twenty feet away, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight. Unlike the last time they'd met, Victor now had shadow marks covering his face and arms, crawling across his skin like living things.
"Though I must say, you've caused me quite a bit of trouble," Victor continued conversationally, as if they were discussing the weather. "Do you have any idea how long it took me to gather all those hostages?"
Tobias appeared at Caleb's side, a low growl rumbling in his chest. "You're outnumbered, Victor."
Victor smiled. "Am I?"
From the shadows behind him, dozens of black eyes gleamed as shadow dogs emerged. But these weren't like the mindless infected dogs they'd fought before. These moved with purpose, intelligence shining in their dark eyes.
"You like my new army?" Victor asked. "I've made improvements to the shadow ritual. These wolves retain their minds while serving me completely."
Lucian joined them, blood dripping from a wound on his shoulder. "Retreat," he ordered softly. "Now."
"Oh, I don't think so," Victor said, snapping his fingers.
A ring of fire sprang up around the camp, cutting off their escape path. Standing beside Victor, a slender figure lowered her hood, showing a young woman with glowing red eyes.
"You remember Eliza, don't you?" Victor asked. "Isabel's apprentice before I recruited her. Not as powerful as your dear aunt, but quite useful nonetheless."
Caleb's heart sank. The hostages who'd already left were safe beyond the fire, but their rescue team was trapped.
"What do you want, Victor?" Caleb asked, trying to hide how weak he felt.
"What I've always wanted," Victor answered. "A Bondspeaker under my control. You've grown so much stronger since our last meeting. Breaking my blood locks? Impressive."
Tobias moved slightly in front of Caleb. "You'll have to go through us first."
Victor's smile widened. "That's what I'm counting on." He turned to Eliza. "Show them the surprise."
The witch raised her hands, and the ground between them began to glow. Shapes formed in the dirt—a magical map showing the mountains and woods around them. One spot glowed brightest of all—their secret cave where Isabel and the rest of their pack waited.
"Did you think I didn't know where you were hiding?" Victor laughed. "While you were here rescuing these worthless hostages, my main force was heading straight for your sanctuary."
Horror washed over Caleb as he understood what this meant. "Isabel! The wounded!"
"Exactly," Victor nodded. "So you have a choice, nephew. Surrender yourself to me now, and I'll call off the attack. Fight me, and everyone you left behind dies tonight."
"He's lying," Tobias growled.
"Am I?" Victor pulled out a small mirror from his pocket. The surface rippled, then showed an image of shadow wolves moving silently through the forest, hundreds of them, approaching the caves where their friends waited, unaware of the risk.
"You have one minute to decide," Victor said quietly. "Your freedom, or their lives."
Caleb looked at Tobias and Lucian, seeing his own fear mirrored in their eyes. The prisoners were safe, but they'd walked right into Victor's real trap.
"I'll go with you," Caleb said quietly.
"No!" Tobias grabbed his arm. "We can fight our way out, warn the others."
Caleb shook his head. "We'd never make it in time." He turned to Victor. "If I surrender, you'll call off the attack. I want your word."
Victor placed his hand over his heart in mock earnestness. "You have my word. No harm will come to your pack tonight."
"Don't trust him," Lucian warned.
But Caleb had made his choice. He stepped forward, away from his friends.
"I'll go with you, but my friends leave safely with the freed hostages," he declared.
Victor considered for a moment, then nodded. "Agreed." He motioned to Eliza, who lowered the fire barrier on one side of the camp.
"Go," Caleb told Tobias and Lucian. "Warn Isabel. Prepare for what's coming."
"We're not leaving you," Tobias said, his voice breaking.
Caleb touched his face gently. "You have to. The pack needs you both."
Lucian pulled Tobias back, understanding in his eyes. "We'll come for you," he promised Caleb. "Whatever it takes."
As his mates and friends fled with the rescued hostages, Caleb turned back to Victor.
"Now what?" he asked.
Victor's smile turned nasty. "Now, nephew, I finish what I started with your mother. The ritual requires a willing Bondspeaker, and you've just volunteered."
Eliza stepped forward with a needle that gleamed in the firelight.
"Once we combine our blood," Victor whispered as she approached, "every wolf in the world will answer to me. And you, dear nephew, will be the key that unlocks it all."
The needle pierced Caleb's skin, and darkness started to close in around him.
