The Witch of Blackwater Marsh

"Duck!" Aurora screamed, pushing Caleb to the ground as a ball of blue fire shot over their heads. It hit a tree behind them, turning the wood to ice instead of burning it.

Caleb rolled to his feet, heart beating. The marsh around them had seemed empty minutes ago, but now strange lights danced between the trees, and the air smelled like lightning.

"What was that?" he asked, helping Kira up from where she'd fallen into the mud.

"Magic," Aurora whispered, her eyes wide. "Someone knows we're here."

The three of them had been traveling for two days since fleeing the River Claw trap. Lucian had stayed behind to help the few uninfected wolves fight back while Caleb and Aurora slipped away. The pain in Caleb's chest hadn't improved — the bond with Tobias stretched thinner with each hour that passed.

"We need to find this witch now," Kira said, wiping mud from her face. "If Victor's shadow wolves track us here..."

Another blue fireball shot from the trees, causing them to dive behind a fallen log.

"I think we found her," Caleb whispered. "Or she found us."

Aurora peeked over the log. "Hello?" she called. "We're not here to hurt you! We need help!"

The only answer was more blue fire, hitting the log and covering it with frost.

"This isn't working," Caleb said, closing his eyes. The mate bond with Tobias felt like a thread about to snap, but he focused instead on something else — the faint buzz of another presence nearby. His Bondspeaker abilities had grown stronger since the attack, letting him feel other wolves, and sometimes, other magical beings.

"There's someone watching us," he said. "Not a wolf... something different."

"The witch?" Kira asked.

Caleb nodded. "I think so." He stood up slowly, hands raised. "Isabel!" he called out, hoping Victor had told the truth about her name. "We know Victor forced you to help him. We're fighting against him too."

The trees went quiet. Even the strange lights stopped moving.

"How do you know my name?" a voice called back, cracking like old paper.

"Victor mentioned you," Aurora answered. "He said you helped create the shadow wolf ritual."

A sour laugh echoed through the trees. "Helped? Is that what he calls it when you chain someone up and steal their magic?"

An old woman stepped out from behind a big cypress tree. Her hair was white as snow, and her eyes glowed slightly blue like the fireballs she'd thrown. Deep scars circled her arms and neck.

"You're from the Vale pack," she said, pointing a crooked finger at Caleb. "I can sense the bond marks on you."

"I'm Caleb. These are my friends Aurora and Kira. We need your help."

Isabel's eyes narrowed. "Why would I help anyone connected to wolf packs? Your kind has brought nothing but pain."

"Because Victor is planning something worse than shadow wolves," Aurora said. "He's targeting Bondspeakers."

The old woman froze. "Bondspeakers? There are none left."

Caleb stepped forward. "I'm one. And so is Aurora."

Isabel's eyes widened. She walked closer, moving surprisingly fast for someone who looked so old. When she reached Caleb, she grabbed his hand, turning it over to look at his palm.

"The marks," she whispered. "The scentless trait. It's true."

Something changed in her face — the anger melting into something like hope, or maybe fear.

"Come with me," she said. "Quickly. It's not safe out here."

She led them deeper into the swamp, through paths that seemed to appear and disappear. After twenty minutes of walking, they reached a small house half-hidden by weeping willows. It looked old, the wood dark with age, but the windows glowed with warm light.

Inside, the house was bigger than it looked from outside. Herbs hung from the ceiling, and bottles filled with strange liquids lined the walls. A big black cat watched them from a rocking chair, its tail twitching.

"Sit," Isabel demanded, pointing to a table in the center of the room.

They sat. The old woman bustled around, making something in a pot that smelled like mint and thunder.

"Drink this," she said, dumping the mixture into cups. "It will protect you from being tracked."

Caleb sniffed his cup suspiciously.

"If I wanted to hurt you, boy, I would have turned you to ice back in the forest," Isabel snapped.

He drank. The liquid tasted sweet at first, then burned all the way down to his guts. A warmth spread through his body, and suddenly the pain from his stretched mate bond eased a little.

"What did you mean about Victor chaining you up?" Aurora asked.

Isabel sat down heavily in the rocking chair, pushing the cat aside. "Victor Drake came to me five years ago. He knew what I was — a witch from the old bloodlines, with knowledge of pack magic. He wanted to know how to make his wolves stronger, how to infect other packs without killing the wolves. When I refused to help him..."

She pulled up her sleeve, showing deep scars that wrapped around her arm like snakes.

"Blood magic," she spat. "He took my blood, mixed it with ancient spells. Forced me to show him how to create the shadow wolves. But that wasn't enough for him."

"What else did he want?" Caleb asked, fearing the answer.

"Control. Complete control over all wolves. And for that, he needed Bondspeaker blood." Isabel looked straight at Caleb. "Your blood, boy."

A chill ran down Caleb's spine. "How do you know so much about Bondspeakers?"

Isabel's face eased slightly. "Because we're family, child."

"What?" Aurora gasped.

"The Riverstone line and mine split centuries ago. My sister married into the Riverstone wolf pack, while I stayed with our witch coven. But the blood is the same." Isabel leaned forward. "You two are the last of our bloodline with the gift."

Caleb felt dizzy. Family. After a lifetime of rejection, the word hit him like a physical blow.

"If we're family, then you'll help us stop Victor?" Kira asked.

Isabel sighed. "It's not that simple. Victor has grown too powerful. The shadow magic has spread too far."

"We have to try," Caleb urged. "Tobias is trapped. Lucian is fighting alone. Our pack is scattered."

"Your mates," Isabel nodded. "I can feel your bonds stretched thin. Soon they'll break if nothing is done."

Fear clutched at Caleb's heart. "Can you help us?"

The old witch was quiet for a long moment. Then she stood and walked to a bookshelf, pulling down an old leather-bound book.

"The counter-spell exists," she said. "A ritual that can reverse what Victor has done, cleanse the shadow infection. But the cost..."

"Whatever it is, I'll pay it," Caleb said firmly.

Isabel opened the book, showing pages covered in strange symbols. "The ritual requires the blood of a Bondspeaker freely given. But not just a few drops — it requires a sacrifice."

"A sacrifice?" Aurora breathed.

"One of you must be willing to give your life to save the others." Isabel looked between Caleb and Aurora. "Your blood, your power, your life force — all poured into the spell. Only then can the shadow infection be purged."

Silence fell over the room. Caleb thought of Lucian fighting alone, of Tobias possibly already lost to the shadows. He thought of all the innocent wolves infected against their will.

"I'll do it," he said quietly.

"Caleb, no!" Aurora grabbed his arm. "There has to be another way."

Isabel watched them with sad eyes. "There's more you should know before you decide. Victor isn't just creating shadow wolves anymore. He's—"

A terrible howl cut through the night, making the windows rattle. Isabel froze, her face drained of color.

"They've found us," she whispered. "How? The protection spell should have—"

The front door burst open. A wolf with black eyes and shadow veins crawling across its fur jumped into the room, but this one was different. The shadows seemed to move like liquid across its body, and its eyes held knowledge that the other infected wolves lacked.

Behind it stood a tall figure that made Caleb's blood turn to ice.

"Hello, Isabel," Victor said with a cold smile. "I see you've met my nephew."

Isabel raised her hands, blue light gathering at her fingers. "Run!" she shouted to Caleb. "Take the book and run!"

Victor laughed. "Oh, they're not going anywhere." He snapped his fingers, and more shadow dogs poured through the door and windows.

"How touching that you found your long-lost aunt," Victor said to Caleb. "Family reunions are so important." His eyes locked onto the ancient book in Isabel's hands. "And I see you've found what I've been looking for all these years."

Isabel threw a ball of blue fire at Victor, but he knocked it away easily. "Your magic can't hurt me anymore, old woman. Not when I have this."

He held up a bottle filled with dark red liquid. "Bondspeaker blood. Your dear grand-niece Margot was kind enough to provide it before she died."

"Margot?" Caleb whispered, his voice breaking. "My mother?"

"Oh, did I forget to tell you?" Victor's smile broadened. "Your mother won't be coming to save you. No one will."

The ghost wolves moved closer, surrounding them. Caleb felt the mate bond with Tobias pull painfully tight, then suddenly snap like a cut string.

The pain drove him to his knees, a scream tearing from his throat.

"Tobias," he gasped. "No!"
