Chapter 73
Brooke's P.o.V
Before I could change my decision about wanting to fight, a powerful impact tore through me as my body slammed into something warm and massive. We tumbled to the ground in a chaotic whirl of fur, teeth bared and growls resonating through the air, a wild concoction of primal instinct and adrenaline.
With instinct to fight kicking in, I clasped my paws tightly around the neck of the unruly beast, and we tumbled together in a wild, chaotic dance on the ground. The air was filled with the energy of our struggle as we wrestled and rolled, each determined to gain the upper hand. As our razor-sharp claws collided, the sound of grinding teeth echoed ominously, sending a jolt through our chests and knocking the breath from our lungs. The wolf before me was undeniably powerful, but I could feel the weight of age in his presence; weariness began to creep into his movements, and it was clear he was growing tired far too swiftly.
Seizing the moment, I took advantage of his brief lapse in focus as he inadvertently raised his head to check his surroundings. I lunged for his exposed throat and as my jaws connected with his silky soft fur, I could feel the satisfying crunch as my teeth sunk deep into the soft meaty flesh. A rush of metallic sweetness flooded my mouth, signalling that I had hit the target. As the wolf writhed desperately in agony under me and tried to yelp out for help, I roughly yanked my head away, taking a large chunk of his throat out with me, silencing his panicked cries. Satisfied, I glanced down at the now lifeless body. One down, many more to go I thought triumphantly, as I spun around, adrenaline coursing through my veins, as I eagerly scanned the crowd for my next challenger.
After I took many more bodies and narrowly escaped a couple of near misses, I found myself in a clearing. The noise of the battle was quieter here but the scene before me froze me with fear. Fighting against Keiran was the dreaded Vaewolfe. He was a strikingly familiar presence in his wolf form, yet towering and magnificent—much larger than any wolf we had ever seen. His fur was drenched with glistening, red blood as he savagely wrestled with our prince. The beast exposed its razor-sharp fangs, desperately trying to grip Keiran, who was bravely defending himself against the magnificent creature. But even I could see that Keiran was starting to lose the battle.
Just as I was about to run in and help, three more vicious wolves jumped in and began supporting the Vaewolfe in his attack. Keiran was seriously outnumbered now, and I knew that if I didn't do something, he would be dead. In a moment of sheer panic, I tilted my head back and let out a haunting howl, calling for help to the luminous moon that hung overhead. Realizing that my cry for help wasn’t going to be enough, a sense of urgency surged within me. I knew I had to take action. Mustering all the courage I could, I shifted back into my human form and quickly scanned the ground in sheer desperation. My heart raced as I searched for anything that I could use to distract the Vaewolfe for long enough. I could hear the snarls and growls intensifying as I prepared to intervene. This wasn’t just a fight for survival; it was a fight for a friend. With a deep breath, I stepped forward, ready to face my fate. Spotting a razor-sharp stone, I picked it up and furiously scraped it across my chest, my pained voice ringing out in shock as the jarred edges cut and ripped my skin open, leaving behind a deep gash.
"Arrgghh!"
The smell of my human blood made the Vaewolfe instantly freeze, his head turning slowly towards me as he hungrily sniffed the air. He took a hesitant step forward, the dim light casting eerie shadows across his muscular frame. Each movement seemed deliberate like a predator sizing up its prey. My heart raced as I realized the danger that lurked in those wide, hungry eyes. Slowly, the Vaewolfe licked his lips hungrily as it eyed up the snack in front of him.
“Stay back!” I shouted, trying to inject confidence into my voice, though it trembled slightly.
He paused, tilting his head as if considering my threat. The air between us crackled with tension, and I could feel the weight of his gaze, almost tangible.
Keiran groaned softly from the floor, struggling to push himself up. “Brooke! No! I command you to shift! Oh shit! You can't! You're injured! What have you done?!”
I held my hand up to silence Keiran as my focus was still locked on the Vaewolfe. It was unnerving how his attention had shifted entirely from Keiran to me as if I were the only thing that mattered in that moment. He was hungry and my blood was like liquid gold to him. With a low growl, the creature lunged forward, ready to claim me as a prize. As I teetered on the brink of consciousness, flashes of chaos danced before my eyes. My legs trembled beneath me, the once-familiar forest blurring as dark shadows crept in. Just before I succumbed to the darkness, I glimpsed a flurry of fur and fierceness—our loyal wolves charging to rescue the prince. The scene unfolded like a vivid dream: our warriors, fierce and determined, leaping onto the Vaewolfe in a blur of motion. Their growls and snarls alongside clashing teeth filled the air.
I smiled softly as the world around me slowed down and the ground finally came to meet me. I had done it. I saved the prince. Elena's Mate. As my tired and aching body hit the ground, the world dissolved into black, and as I surrendered to the void, I still couldn't shake the feeling that the fight was far from over.
