Chapter 72

Brooke's P.o.V

With growing anticipation, I trailed behind Kieran as he exited his private quarters, the heavy wooden door creaking shut behind us. We crossed the ancient stone bridge that arched gracefully over the garden below, the chill of the wind biting at my skin. Shadows danced along the castle walls, illuminated only by the flickering torches that lined our path. Kieran strode ahead, his silence speaking volumes; the weight of the moment demanded no idle chatter.

As we entered the main castle courtyard, the atmosphere was charged with an electric intensity. The air filled with the harmony of urgent shouts and the unmistakable clattering of armour as the guards bustled about, their faces flushed with a mix of excitement and fear. The clash of metal rang through the stone halls as they diligently prepared for the impending battle, their voices rising above the din as they recounted strategies and rallied each other. I could feel the thrill and anxiety intertwining within the castle's walls, echoing my own racing heartbeat.

The commanders, their voices rising above the noise, barked urgent orders, their authoritative tones cutting through the chaos as they directed everyone to their respective posts. Staff members hurriedly scurried about, locking doors and windows with trembling hands, their efforts seeming almost futile against the looming uncertainty that surrounded the palace.

As we stomped through the bustling corridors, the air thick with tension, we finally emerged into the garden. The scene before us was striking—a vast sea of men and women, their faces etched with anxiety, paced restlessly along the manicured paths. Each individual appeared on edge, casting expectant glances toward the grand entrance, desperate for any sign of their prince. The garden, usually a serene retreat, now felt charged with an electric anticipation that hung heavily in the air.

Tentatively, I inhaled deeply, my senses heightened by the scent of magic in the air. It became clear that the individuals gathered here tonight were not mere mortals; each man and woman before me was a shapeshifter, just like myself—beasts of formidable size and strength, each one ready to join the fight against the evil prince.

A loud sound erupted behind me, pulling my attention away from the large crowd in front of me. I turned to see our human allies, encased in glimmering silver armour that reflected the dim light of the moon, standing shoulder to shoulder in a solid formation. Their expressions were a mix of determination and trepidation as they gripped oversized swords, waiting for Kieran to issue his command.

Although a werewolf would have little trouble dispatching a human in a confrontation, the scales tipped dramatically when one werewolf faced an entire battalion clad in silver. The cold reality sank in—the gleaming metal was the bane of our kind, the very weakness that made any direct assault against these armoured warriors a perilous gamble.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Kieran proclaimed confidently, capturing the attention of everyone gathered on the lawn. "The time has arrived. Carlton and his army are on the move and they are heading straight for us. My fiancee and our child are in danger, and Carlton is after both them and my life. I call on each of you to stand firmly with me, as you’ve already committed to do, and we will protect this family from harm together. I will warn you, however. They have a Vaewolfe on their side. Do not be afraid. We have the strength and numbers to take that creature down! Armour and swords may help us a little but tonight will be a battle of fur, claws and teeth combined with skill and brute force. I urge you all to shift and unleash the beasts within!"

One by one, the men and women around me underwent a breathtaking transformation, shifting into their wolfen forms. The lawn quickly teemed with an ocean of snarling creatures, each one a vivid colour against the dusky sky. Rich, earthy browns melded with inky blacks and fiery reds, while silvery greys and pristine whites danced alongside warm, golden sandy hues. This magnificent display stretched endlessly before me, filling the air with an electric tension as the beasts prowled the grass, a mesmerizing fusion of power and primal beauty. The air was heavy with the scent of wolf breath as we panted deeply, eagerly anticipating Kieran's next move. His wolf was perched on the garden steps, its head tilted as if listening for something. He searched the mind-link for any trace of Carlton's whereabouts when suddenly, his head snapped up and his eyes began to glow.

"They're making their way deep into the heart of the forest. It's time to meet them head-on! Alright, everyone, let's move out!"

The air crackled with the rhythm of a thousand paws pounding against the earth, a thunderous chorus that sent shivers down my spine as we charged toward the shadowy forest ahead. Howls pierced the night, wild and fierce, marking our fierce approach. This was it—our moment had come, the battle we had all anticipated, and I was right in the heart of it.

With my heart pounding and adrenaline coursing through me, I locked my gaze on the looming trees ahead. Each breath I took was steady and deliberate as I pushed my paws to accelerate, feeling the earth fly beneath me. The symphony of cracking twigs and rustling bushes enveloped us, as we continued our fierce charge toward the enemy.

The adrenaline surged through my veins, every heartbeat echoing in my ears as the shadows deepened around us. The thrill of the chase propelled me forward, but it was the urgency of the moment that ignited every sense, sharpening my focus. Each corner we turned felt like a step closer to our target, yet the intense fear in the air warned me of the dangers that lurked just out of sight. With every passing second, the pressure mounted—something was waiting ahead, and I could feel it watching us, ready to strike. We had to close in fast, but the closer we got, the more I sensed the lurking menace, that we were not just hunters, but potential prey.
