Chapter 74

Kieran's P.o.V

I was starting to feel exhausted. My body felt heavy and worn out. I had always considered myself the strongest shapeshifter, but this vaewolfe was unlike anything I had encountered before. It felt like the more energy I lost, the more he gained. His wolf form was larger than any wolf I had ever seen, and he possessed the speed of a vampire coursing through his veins. His powerful forelegs coiled around my body tightly, as if he was trying to crush me with his strength as we battled ferociously. Our jaws and fangs clashed furiously as I tried to gain a hold of any part of the vaewolfe, but he was far too quick and blocked my every move. His thick, shaggy fur glistened under the pale moonlight, coated in thick, congealing crimson goo that was the unmistakable blood of our fallen heroes.

Many of our human allies selflessly laid down their lives, driven by unwavering loyalty and a fierce desire to assist us in this monumental battle. Despite their courage, their efforts were ultimately in vain; the frailty of their human bodies was no match for the relentless onslaught of an enraged army of shape-shifters. Yet, the courage displayed by these brave souls would not go unnoticed. In the heart of the conflict, the air crackled with tension, and the ground trembled beneath the chaos—a brutal clash of fangs and claws and fur. Wolf against wolf - each side fiercely defending their beliefs and the honour of their chosen prince.

As I stood frozen in fear, my heart racing, three more fierce wolves leapt into the clearing, their powerful bodies cutting through the underbrush with a feral grace. Their glistening, exposed fangs were dripping in blood. The metallic scent of blood filled the air, sharp and suffocating, as they approached, their golden eyes glinting with a predatory intensity. With every thunderous paw strike against the forest floor, it became painfully clear they were not just random warriors joining in the fight; they were the relentless guardians of their prince's secret weapon, and they were coming for me.

"I need help! I'm outnumbered, and the Vaewolfe is here!" I shouted desperately through the mind link, my voice trembling with urgency as I hoped that some of my warriors were close enough to hear my call for aid.

Instantly, the three furious wolves collided with me, their immense weight and momentum throwing me backwards like a ragdoll. My body slammed into the rough bark of a nearby oak tree, the impact resonating through my body as pain shot through my limbs and the world spun around me in a blur of colour. The strength of our powerful bodies combined effortlessly toppled the ancient oak tree, its once-mighty trunk snapping with a resounding crack that echoed through the still night air. The sound of splintering wood filled the atmosphere, followed by a thunderous crash as the massive tree surrendered to its fate, crashing down to the forest floor and finding its final resting place amidst a cascade of branches and leaves. Breathing heavily, I lay on the hard ground, trying to ease the building fatigue that clung to my muscles. I scanned the shadowy surroundings, searching for any sign of the elusive vaewolfe. Meanwhile, the other three wolves were entangled in a messy web of branches and debris, their forms lost in the tangle of the fallen oak as they struggled to free themselves.

That's when I caught sight of her - Brooke. She was in the heart of the clearing, completely vulnerable in her human form, yet fiercely gripping a large, jagged rock in her hand. The vaewolfe - its eyes locked on me - hadn't noticed her yet. Just as the beast lunged menacingly in my direction, the night erupted with a blood-curdling scream that pierced the air like a warning shot.

"Arrgghh!"

The tantalising smell of fresh, warm human blood filled the air, causing the vawolf to freeze in place. Slowly, he raised his head into the air and sniffed hungrily, turning his gaze toward Brooke. His eyes glowed red with hunger as the vampire within him began to take control. Gradually, he started to lick his lips, foam forming at the corners of his mouth as he completely ignored me, focusing instead on sizing up his new prey.

“Stay back!” Brooke shouted, or at least tried to. However, her voice emerged as more of a gasp as her body began to succumb to the effects of blood loss.

At the sound of her raspy voice, the Vaoewolfe paused in his approach and tilted his head. Was he curious, perceiving Brooke as a threat, or had he finally realised that this was a distraction? With a deep groan, I summoned every ounce of strength and pushed myself off the cold floor. Each muscle in my body screamed in protest, but I refused to give in. Gritting my teeth against the pain, I steadied myself and finally found my feet.

“Brooke! No! I command you to shift! Oh shit! You can't! You're injured! What have you done?!” I yelled through the mindlink furiously, with a hint of panic lacing every word.

In Brooke's heroic attempt to distract the Vaewolfe, she had unknowingly slashed herself deep enough to damage her major blood vessels, and as her blood gushed out, her clothes began to change into a deep shade of crimson.  This was my chance to finally finish the Vaewolfe, but saving Brooke was my top priority. She raised her hand, silently commanding me to hold my tongue, her fierce gaze locked onto the Vaewolfe. The tension crackled in the air around us, and I could feel the weight of her determination as we prepared to face our fate together.

Just as I prepared to act, a deep, primal growl escaped from the Vaewolfe's throat, sending chills down my spine. He was no longer able to fight the fierce instinct that coursed through him. In an explosive moment, the Vaewolfe surged forward, his eyes fixed hungrily on Brooke, his fangs exposed and ready for

the kill. With every ounce of strength surging through me, I sprang into action, launching myself after the veawolfe. To my astonishment, a flurry of furry bodies rushed to my side, answering the call for aid! I whipped my head around, and my heart raced as I counted nearly twenty of my most trusted shapeshifters joining the fray. With a triumphant roar, we leapt into the air, launching ourselves onto the Vaewolfe. Our united strength was unstoppable, quickly overwhelming him in a breathtaking display of power and unity. With each powerful blow that struck his body, we weakened him further, our fierce determination bringing him finally crashing down onto the hard earth floor!

With adrenaline surging through my veins, I tore myself from the fray, trusting my fierce warriors to hold the line against the relentless beast. My focus shifted like a lightning strike to Brooke. Gone was her defiant stance; instead, she lay crumpled on the forest floor, strikingly contrasting the chaos surrounding us. My heart raced as I dashed toward her, urgency fueling my every step as I quickly transformed back into my own human form. With a heavy heart, I knelt beside her still form, my breath catching in my throat. Tenderly, I brushed her hair back, unveiling the elegant curve of her neck. As my fingers grazed her soft, cool skin, I felt a surge of desperation. I pressed down gently on the side of her neck, searching for the faintest sign of life—the elusive pulse I so desperately hoped to find. But the silence that lingered was suffocating; there was no pulse.

Shit!
