Chapter 27 Ashes of the Silent Part
Chapter 27 Ashes of the Silent Part
The wind carried a strange quiet as Nyra and her companions descended from the Shattered Gate. The mountains around them, once rumbling with unstable magic, had fallen eerily still. Even the shadows felt cautious, hesitant to move without Nyra’s command. She could sense it the Hollow King had retreated, but not in defeat. In calculation.
They stopped at the base of the ridge, where a narrow trail snaked into the fog-covered valley below. The Silent Path. A route avoided by travelers, spoken of only in broken tales around firelight. Liora tightened her cloak around her shoulders.
“We should rest before we take another step,” she said, lowering her staff. “The Silent Path amplifies instability. If we enter it exhausted, it will twist our senses.”
Aric knelt beside Nyra. “How’s your breathing?”
She blinked, surprised. “My breathing?”
“You pushed yourself at the Gate,” he said, voice gentle but firm. “The fire and the shadow they drain you even when you think you’re in control.”
Nyra exhaled slowly, flame flickering faintly across her fingers. “I’m fine. Just… aware.” She met his gaze, letting honesty settle. “Every time I use both fire and shadow I feel like something inside me shifts. Balances. Breaks. Reforms.”
Liora dropped to a crouch. “That’s expected. You’re channeling two opposing forces. They’re not meant to coexist naturally. You’re forging something new.”
“A weapon,” Aric muttered.
Nyra looked up sharply. “A choice.”
His expression softened. “You’re right. Sorry.”
They made camp beneath the curve of a jagged rock wall, its surface scorched black by old lightning. Liora murmured a spell, weaving a faint dome of protective light. Nyra sat at the edge, staring into the flickering campfire, letting the warmth settle her thoughts.
For a long moment, no one spoke. The silence pressed around them like a presence.
“What did you see back there?” Aric finally asked. “When the Hollow King tried to get into your mind?”
Nyra hesitated. Liora was listening. The fire crackled. A cold breeze swept across her neck.
“I saw… possibilities,” she said slowly. “A version of myself that didn’t resist. A version that let the shadow consume the fire. A path where I held limitless power.” She swallowed. “And one where I burned everything I loved.”
Liora’s expression grew grave. “That’s how he breaks people. He shows both extremes. Temptation and fear.”
Nyra turned the flame in her palm, watching the shadows curl inside it. “But I chose neither.”
Aric smiled faintly. “That’s what makes you dangerous—to him.”
Nyra felt the weight of that truth settle in her bones. Dangerous. Feared. Targeted. The fire in her core pulsed, then the shadow pulsed with it, synchronized like twin heartbeats. She closed her hand, extinguishing the flame.
Before they could speak further, the earth trembled quietly at first, then with a deep, grumbling growl. Liora’s head snapped up.
“Not now,” she whispered.
The ground split open several meters away, cracks glowing faintly with pale light. Whispering voices spilled out soft, distorted, familiar. Nyra stiffened as one voice slithered into her mind.
“Nyra…”
She froze. It was Elias. Her brother. His exact tone, his cadence, the tremble of warmth she remembered. For a heartbeat, she forgot to breathe.
Aric grabbed her arm. “Nyra. Look at me. That’s not him.”
But the voice grew louder, calling her name again, pleading.
Liora stepped forward, her staff raised. “It’s an echo. A Rift-memory. It’s trying to manipulate you.”
Nyra’s heart pounded. “I know his voice,” she whispered, tears stinging her eyes. “He sounded he sounded like he needed me.”
“That’s the Hollow King,” Liora said sharply. “He learned your weakness.”
Nyra clenched her jaw until it hurt. The Hollow King had crossed a line. He had touched the one memory she guarded most fiercely.
Fire flared around her involuntarily, swirling with sharp intensity. Aric stepped back, shielding his face from the heat.
“Nyra control it,” he urged.
But the fire wasn’t wild. It was furious. Controlled fury. A brand of anger that came from loss, not chaos. Nyra stood, and the flames rose with her, forming a burning arc around her silhouette.
“I’m done with his whispers,” she said, voice trembling with emotion. “He doesn’t get to use Elias. Not anymore.”
Liora struck the ground with her staff. A clear ripple of magic spread across the cracks, sealing them shut. The whispers stopped abruptly, smothered in silence.
Nyra collapsed to her knees, the fire fading. Aric caught her, arms circling her shoulders as she shook with quiet, angry breaths.
“I’m here,” he whispered. “You didn’t fall for it. You didn’t break.”
She closed her eyes, letting the comfort seep in. Aric’s hold was steady, grounding. Liora watched them, concern mixing with admiration.
“You faced one of the Hollow King’s cruelest tricks,” she said softly. “And you resisted. Most never could.”
Nyra wiped her face and stood slowly. “Then I’m ready for the Silent Path.”
Aric stared. “Already? Nyra”
“If the Hollow King wants to twist my memories, then I want to face him on my terms. Not while hiding. Not while retreating.”
Liora nodded reluctantly. “Very well. But once we enter, you must not trust anything you see or hear.”
Nyra inhaled deeply. “I won’t.”
\---
They reached the entrance to the Silent Path at dusk. Wisps of fog drifted between sharp stone pillars, and the air hummed with unstable magic. Nyra stepped in first, fire glowing faintly beneath her skin.
The world warped immediately.
Colors bled into one another like wet ink. The ground rippled beneath their feet, shifting between stone, ash, and glass. Distorted reflections flickered in the fog copies of themselves lagging behind, moving seconds out of sync.
Aric tightened his grip on his sword. “I hate this place.”
Liora’s voice echoed strangely. “Stay tethered to your will. The Path tests the mind, not the body.”
As they walked deeper, Nyra felt pressure in her skull a subtle push, like invisible fingers searching for cracks. She pushed back with fire and shadow both, sealing her mind.
The fog thickened until shapes danced in it shapes Nyra recognized. Figures from her past. Shadows of people she cared about. Her mother. Her childhood friend Keshi. And once again… Elias.
But something changed this time.
The illusion didn’t call her name.
It watched her. Silent. Still.
Nyra felt a cold prickle along her spine. Aric leaned close. “Don’t look at them. They’re bait.”
She tore her gaze away, pushing forward. Her heartbeat thudded loud in her ears. The path narrowed, twisting. The fog pulsed, thick enough to taste.
Then suddenly everything went silent.
And Nyra was alone.
“Aric?” she called. No answer. “Liora?”
Nothing.
The fog swallowed her voice.
A chill crept through her, but she steadied her breathing. The Path was testing her. Separating her. Forcing her to rely on herself.
She walked forward, hand raised, fire curling around her fingers and stopped.
Someone stood ahead of her.
A tall, shadowed figure, cloaked in twisting darkness. No face. No body. Only presence.
The Hollow King.
Or at least, a fragment of him.
The figure tilted its head. When it spoke, the voice was layered—Elias, Aric, her own mother, and beneath it all, the Hollow King’s deep resonance.
“You cannot run from me, Nyra.”
Her fire surged instantly. Shadow wrapped around her arms, ready to strike.
“I’m not running,”
she said. “I’m walking toward you.”
The figure’s laughter cracked the air.
“We shall see.”
And then the Silent Path shattered into darkness.
