Chapter 28 Where the Shadows choose Sides
Chapter 28 Where the Shadows choose Sides
Nyra hit the ground hard, her palms scraping against cold stone as the illusion dissolved around her. For a heartbeat the world was still nothing but ringing silence and swirling darkness, but then her breath returned in a sharp gasp. She pushed herself upright, vision blurred and chest tight, searching desperately through the dim corridor.
“Aric?” Her voice cracked. “Aric!”
Only echoes answered her.
The Hollow King’s last illusion had ripped them apart just when the floor split wide beneath their feet. Nyra swallowed hard, panic threatening to claw its way up her throat. She forced it down. Panic was a trap his trap. She would not fall into it.
Her Phoenix fire flickered beneath her skin, a soft heat trying to soothe her rising fear.
“Not now,” she whispered. “Not when he’s alone somewhere in this cursed fortress.”
She stood fully, dusting rubble from her cloak. The corridor before her felt wrong too silent, too still. The air shimmered with leftover magic, the kind that clung to the flesh like cobwebs.
Nyra pressed her palm to the wall, letting her fire seep through her skin in a faint pulse. It cast a soft golden glow, revealing sigils carved deep into the stone sigils that were twisting, shifting, rewriting themselves in real time.
“They’re changing the path…” she breathed.
A low whisper curled through the air.
Everything changes in Ember Watch, Phoenixborn. Even you.
Nyra stiffened. “Your tricks won’t work on me. Not anymore.”
But the Hollow King only laughed soft, distant, chilling.
Nyra pushed forward, forcing her feet to move even when her heart trembled. Each step echoed too loud in the narrowing corridor. The air thickened, humming with force, and she felt the familiar ache of magic pressing against her ribs.
She hated the silence most. Aric was never silent. Even in danger, even in battle, he was a constant steady presence, steady breath, steady heartbeat at her side.
Now he was nowhere.
Her chest tightened painfully. “Please be alive,” she whispered.
\---
A sudden tremor shook the floor beneath her.
Nyra braced against the wall as a sharp surge of magic crackled ahead. Something someone was fighting. Her pulse leapt. She sprinted toward the sound, fire bursting from her palms, casting molten light across the walls. The corridor opened into a broad hall, its pillars cracked and its ceiling sagging from long-forgotten battles.
Aric stood in the center, sword raised, surrounded by three shadow-born constructs. His clothes were torn, his hair a mess of dark strands, and blood streaked his cheek but he was alive.
Relief hit her so hard her knees nearly buckled.
“Aric!” she shouted, launching a molten arc that slammed into the nearest construct, blowing it backward in a burst of golden sparks.
He spun toward her, eyes widening with fierce relief. “Nyra thank the skies. I thought he took you.”
One of the remaining constructs lunged at him. Nyra thrust her hand forward, fire coiling into a precise bolt that struck the creature cleanly through the chest. It dissolved into ash.
The final construct turned toward her, and Aric didn’t hesitate. He ran full speed closing the distance between them in a blur. He sliced through the creature just as it reached for her, the blow so powerful the construct exploded like shattered glass.
Silence fell abruptly.
Aric didn’t lower his sword at first, breath harsh and shoulders heaving. Only when he was certain the shadows were gone did he turn fully toward her.
“You’re hurt,” she blurted, reaching for him without thinking.
He caught her wrist gently, his grip trembling. “It’s nothing.”
She stepped closer anyway, her fingers brushing the blood on his cheek. It wasn’t deep, but the sight of it twisted something inside her—too sharp, too raw.
“You scared me,” she whispered.
His gaze softened instantly. “You disappeared, Nyra. The floor swallowed you, and I couldn’t” His voice broke off. He looked away, jaw clenched. “I thought I’d lost you.”
Nyra’s heart slammed painfully. “I’m here,” she said softly. “I’m with you.”
Aric exhaled, long and shaky, and for a moment he didn’t hide anything. Fear, relief, longing it was all written plainly in his eyes.
He stepped closer, so close her breath caught.
“You can’t vanish on me again,” he murmured. “Not here. Not when the Hollow King wants you more than anything.”
Nyra swallowed. “I’m not going anywhere without you.”
His hand rose almost unconsciously, fingers brushing the side of her face. Heat rushed through her real heat, not Phoenix fire. Her breath hitched. Aric froze as if realizing what he’d done, but he didn’t pull back.
“Nyra…” he whispered, voice rough.
Her heartbeat thudded unevenly. She knew they didn’t have time for this knew danger still lurked everywhere in Ember Watch. But standing here, with the shadows pulling apart and the world momentarily still, she suddenly felt the crushing weight of everything they’d been through. Every risk, every wound, every choice.
And Aric had been there for all of it.
She leaned into his touch just slightly, enough to tell him she wasn’t afraid of it of him.
His breath stilled.
For one suspended second, the world narrowed to the warmth of his hand, the rise and fall of his chest, the way his eyes searched her face like she was something precious, something he wasn’t sure he was allowed to want.
Then a low pulse of magic rippled through the floor, breaking the moment.
Aric dropped his hand reluctantly, jaw tightening with both frustration and focus. “We need to move. Ember Watch is reconfiguring again.”
Nyra nodded, though part of her ached for the moment they almost had. “We’ll figure this out later.”
A faint smile ghosted across his lips. “Promise?”
She didn’t hesitate. “Promise.”
\---
They moved together through the shifting corridors, staying close closer than before. Aric’s hand brushed her back whenever they turned corners; Nyra’s fire flickered in soft protective arcs around them both. The Hollow King’s magic pulsed at the edges of their senses, but instead of pushing them apart, it only made them anchor themselves more firmly to each other.
At one point the corridor split into three twisting paths. Nyra hesitated, but Aric stepped behind her, resting his hand carefully on her shoulder.
“Right,” he murmured. “The air’s warmer there more magic residue. That means the trials continue that way.”
Nyra turned her head slightly, eyes meeting his. “You’re getting good at reading this place.”
“Only because I watch you read it first,” he said softly.
Heat rose in her cheeks unexpected, uncontrollable.
They pressed on.
\---
The final chamber they entered was vast its ceiling lost to darkness, its walls carved with ancient Phoenix sigils. In the center stood a massive stone door pulsing with violet and gold light.
Nyra felt it instantly.
The next trial.
Aric stood beside her, sword still sheathed for the moment. “Whatever waits behind that door,” he said quietly, “we face it together.”
She looked at him, really looked at him at his steadiness, his loyalty, the way he never wavered even when the world tried to tear them apart.
“Together,” she whispered.
Their hands brushed again.
This time neither of them pulled away.
