Chapter 26 The Hollow King's whisper
Chapter 26 The Hollow King's whisper
The morning came like a knife slicing through darkness pale, cold, and unforgiving. Nyra sat on the edge of the cliff outside the Hall of Veins, the wind tugging at her hair, carrying the scent of charred stone and lingering embers. The Shattered Gate loomed in the distance, fractured shards suspended midair like a frozen storm. It pulsed faintly, a heartbeat she could feel in her chest.
Aric approached silently, his footsteps careful on the jagged rocks. He sat beside her, close enough that the heat from his body brushed against hers, anchoring her to reality. She didn’t speak at first; words felt heavy, unnecessary in the quiet of morning.
“I can feel him,” Nyra said finally, her voice low. “The Hollow King… he’s watching. Listening.”
Aric’s jaw tightened. “He’s been watching since the day we entered Ember Watch.”
“I know,” she admitted, pulling her knees close. “But now… it’s different. I feel him in my fire. In my shadow. He whispers.” She shivered, a mix of fear and resolve. “And sometimes… I almost answer.”
Aric put a hand on hers. “Don’t. He’s dangerous. Every time you hesitate, every time doubt creeps in, he gains strength. You have to stay sharp. Stay together.”
Nyra nodded, focusing on the warmth in his hand, the grounding reality it offered. The fire within her stirred but stayed controlled. The shadows curled at her feet but did not surge. She breathed, slow and steady, letting the duality inside her sync with the world outside.
Liora arrived moments later, staff in hand, eyes scanning the horizon. “We don’t have long,” she said, urgency creeping into her voice. “The Rift is growing. The Hollow King’s influence extends further every hour. By nightfall, the Gate will be unstable. It may collapse or worse, consume everything around it.”
Nyra rose, letting the wind whip her cloak around her. “Then we act now. Not tomorrow. Not when it feels safe. Now.”
Aric followed, sword slung across his back. “Do you even realize what you’re saying?” he asked quietly. “The Hollow King isn’t just a foe we can fight. He’s a force. A storm. He’s”
“He’s a shadow that can be fought,” Nyra finished for him. Her voice had steel now, but her hands trembled slightly despite the fire coiling inside her. “And I’m not alone.”
Liora nodded. “Then let’s move. The Gate waits, and it won’t pause for anyone.”

The journey to the Shattered Gate was perilous. The path twisted through jagged rock formations, caves filled with echoing whispers, and rivers of molten stone that hissed as they crossed. Shadows moved unnaturally, pooling and stretching in impossible shapes, but Nyra kept them at bay. The fire she wielded no longer reacted purely to fear it danced to her command, coiling in protective patterns around her.
Aric stayed close, blade ready, while Liora moved ahead, scanning for sigils and traps. Nyra could feel the Hollow King watching, anticipating, probing. Every step brought a flutter of heat and cold at once fire and shadow entwined, neither dominant, both waiting for her choice.
“Stay close,” Liora warned. “The Hollow King’s presence grows stronger the closer we get. He may try to manipulate what you see. Don’t let him.”
Nyra swallowed. “I won’t. I can feel him, but I won’t answer.”
Aric glanced at her, his eyes sharp. “Are you sure about that?”
She met his gaze, determination hardening. “I have to be.”
The final approach to the Gate was a narrow stone bridge suspended over a chasm of blackened smoke. Shadows clawed at the edges, and Nyra felt their hunger, their desire to pull her into the Rift before she even reached it. She exhaled slowly, focusing on the dual flame within her chest. Fire flared to meet the shadows, pushing them back just enough to keep a path open.
Liora muttered an incantation, leaving a protective rune behind as they crossed. “Don’t underestimate the Rift,” she said. “It reacts to your fears, your desires. It’s… intelligent. Almost alive.”
Nyra’s hands trembled, but she forced control. The fire spiraled outward, bright and precise. The shadows wrapped around her, obedient and calm. Together, they formed a protective shell.
Aric took her other hand, grounding her. “Together,” he whispered. “We face it together.”
She nodded, heart beating fast, fire and shadow balanced for the first time. She had trained, fought, and endured, but nothing had prepared her for the palpable presence waiting beyond the Gate.
\---
The Shattered Gate loomed above them, jagged shards spinning slowly in the air, dark mist spilling from the cracks. Nyra stepped closer, feeling the Hollow King’s gaze pierce her mind. The whispers were clearer now soft, seductive, filled with promises and threats.
“You cannot resist me forever, Phoenixborn,” the voice said, echoing through her bones. “I know your fire, your shadow, your doubts. One flicker of hesitation, and you are mine.”
Nyra’s hands clenched, fire flaring brighter. “I am not yours,” she shouted, voice echoing off the cavern walls. The shadows wrapped tighter around her, responding to her will. The Hollow King hissed frustration, surprise, and anger mingling in the echo.
Liora raised her staff, chanting, a barrier forming to contain the Rift’s tendrils. Aric stayed close, blade in hand, protecting her flank. Nyra inhaled deeply, drawing the fire and shadow together. She stepped forward, hand extended toward the Rift.
The Gate shivered, mist rising like fingers grasping for her. The Hollow King’s whisper escalated, attempting to lure her in, to seduce her with visions of power, vengeance, and the reunion with her brother.
Nyra’s vision swirled with memories her training, her failures, her triumphs, and the faces of those she loved. She drew a line through them, a decision crystalizing in her mind.
“I choose myself,” she said aloud. The fire and shadow responded instantly, intertwining into a brilliant halo that wrapped around her like armor.
The Hollow King screamed, a sound that fractured stone and shook the air. The Gate quivered violently, shards spinning faster, the mist twisting into a frenzy. Yet Nyra stood firm, anchored by fire, shadow, and trust in those beside her.
“Now,” she whispered to Aric and Liora.
They moved in unison Aric striking with precision, severing tendrils of mist attempting to latch onto her, Liora reinforcing the protective barrier. Together, they pushed against the Rift, guiding the storm back into controlled spirals, forcing the Hollow King’s presence to retreat, shrieking into silence.
Nyra’s chest burned as she maintained the flow of energy. Sweat dripped down her face, but she did not falter. Fire and shadow danced around her, a symphony of control and defiance.
When the last tendril collapsed, the Gate hung still, fractured but contained. The Hollow King’s whispers faded, leaving only a cold silence that pressed against them like weight.
Nyra fell to her knees, breathing heavily. Aric knelt beside her, pressing a hand to her back. “You did it,” he said, voice shaking. “You… you faced him.”
Liora approached, staff glowing faintly. “Yes. But this is only the beginning. He will return. Stronger. Cunning. And he will test your will again.”
Nyra lifted her head, eyes burning with resolve. “Then I will be ready. Fire and shadow together. I will not be his vessel.”
Aric took her hand, holding it tight. “And I’ll be here. Always.”
Nyra felt the warmth of the fire, the chill of the shadow, and the bond between them. For the first time, she believed in herself and in the choice she had made.
The Shattered Gate loomed behind them, fractured but still standing. The Hollow King had been repelled, for now. But Nyra knew the battle was far from over. Every choice, every heartbeat, every flicker of fire and shadow would shape the coming storm.
She stood, shoulders squared, fire and shadow coiling around her like a crown. She was ready.
