Chapter 90
I carefully put away my mother's photo and looked at Athena. "Has this month's money come through?"
A flash of surprise crossed Athena's eyes, then she said to me, "Your money should have arrived the day before yesterday. It's deposited on time at the beginning of each month."
I quickly pulled out my phone and searched through my bank notifications. Sure enough, there was a deposit message - five hundred thousand dollars had been transferred in.
Looking at that string of numbers, my hands were shaking a bit.
Before, I just swiped Kane's card and didn't have such a clear concept of money as I do now.
I realized I actually owned five hundred thousand dollars.
Though I needed to transfer part of this money to Luca.
Thinking about how Luca would continue gambling with the money made me feel a bit regretful.
But to get my mother's ashes, I had to transfer a hundred thousand to him. It was the bank account number I knew so well.
I hoped Luca would keep his word.
Thinking that in a few months I could get my mother's ashes, I felt incredibly happy.
I hummed a tune as I walked inside.
Suddenly, something occurred to me, and I turned to look at Athena. "Are there security cameras outside the estate?"
Athena nodded. "Yes, there are cameras."
I told her about the strange person I'd seen at the gate.
Athena's expression became very serious. She said to me, "I'll go verify it right away and see if they were sent by another faction to observe the situation."
Hearing Athena say this, I silently regretted being too careless earlier.
After all, Kane's identity was the head of the mafia, so my surroundings were actually full of danger too.
Now, as Kane's wife, who knows how many people were watching me.
The way I just spoke so directly was really too risky. If she really had been sent by Kane's enemies, I might already be dead by now.
Thinking of this, I felt a bit scared and nodded at Athena.
Athena could see I was frightened. She stepped forward and bent down slightly.
"If you're willing, we can assign you two personal bodyguards."
I thought having bodyguards with me all the time was a bit much and waved my hand to refuse.
But Athena said to me, "You'll face more and more danger in the future. In my view, having bodyguards when you go out is very necessary."
Athena was a girl who looked cold but was actually very gentle, careful, and considerate.
Hearing her say this, I hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded. "Alright, let's do as you say."
Athena showed me a slightly warmer expression.
"These were all arranged in advance by Mr. Moretti. It just depends on your personal willingness. We can arrange it for you immediately when you need it."
Kane's thoughtfulness made my heart feel warm, and that bit of fear disappeared.
With a smile on my face, I continued walking into the estate.
I saw Nina's room light was on and gently knocked on her door. "Nina, are you asleep?"
Nina's cheerful voice came from inside. "Of course not. Do you want to come in and chat with me?"
"Of course I want to chat with you for a bit."
I pushed the door open and went in.
Nina was wearing a face mask, humming a tune, playing on her computer, looking very relaxed and comfortable.
I sat down next to her, propping my chin on my hand, watching her play a currently popular shooting game, then suddenly said, "I asked Kane today, and he said Bandel is single."
Nina's shooting motion immediately stopped.
The character she was controlling got shot dead by the opponent in the next second.
I looked at her with some apology. "Did my words distract you?"
Nina immediately took off her headphones and shook her head at me. "Of course not. You just said Bandel is single?"
Seeing the joy in Nina's eyes, I knew she definitely had feelings for Bandel.
But when did this happen?
I looked at Nina with some teasing in my eyes. "You and Bandel haven't met many times, have you? When did you start liking him?"
Nina's expression showed some shyness.
She lowered her head a bit bashfully. "I can't really say when I started liking him. I just think he's quite manly."
I'd always known Nina liked that kind of fit, strong man, and Mr. Bandel fit her aesthetic perfectly.
I leaned close to her ear and said with a grin, "There's another piece of good news. I mentioned this to Mr. Moretti. He said you and Bandel can come with us on our honeymoon."
Nina's eyes showed disbelief. She stammered a bit, "Really? Can I can go on the honeymoon with you? Bandel will come too?"
I nodded. "Of course. This is what Mr. Moretti told me himself. Knowing his personality, he would never lie."
This way, Nina and Bandel would have time alone together.
I figured that with Bandel's personality plus Nina's cleverness, both of them would definitely want to give Kane and me private space, and that would be a good opportunity for them to be alone together.
I winked at Nina. "You'd better seize the opportunity."
Nina's face turned red again. She reached out and punched my shoulder lightly.
"How did you learn to be so bad from Mr. Moretti? You never used to say things like this."
I pretended to dodge Nina's playful punches and generously transferred a hundred thousand dollars to her on my phone.
Hearing the deposit notification, Nina's eyes widened. "What are you doing?"
"As the wife of the mafia boss, I get five hundred thousand in spending money every month."
I smiled slightly. "Don't you remember? We said before that if one of us got rich, the rich one would pay the other one a salary and support them."
Nina's eyes got a bit red, showing emotion.
She looked at me, her voice choking up a bit. "I didn't think you'd still remember that."
In the past, we both assumed Nina would do better than me, so Nina always thought she'd be the one supporting me.
She never expected it would be me supporting her now.
I put my arm around her shoulder. Seeing her so moved, I couldn't help choking up a bit, too. "No matter what, our lives are getting better now, dear."
Nina hugged me and nodded.
Indeed, no matter how expensive the things I'd bought before, because I hadn't actually seen those amounts with my own eyes, neither Nina nor I had realized what kind of life we were actually living.
Now that I'd sent Nina a hundred thousand, she was like me earlier - as if she'd been dreaming and only now was certain it wasn't a dream, but a beautiful reality.
I stroked her hair and said to her, "Our days ahead will only get better and better."
Nina also nodded firmly and said, "That's right, our days ahead will get better and better."
After chatting with Nina for a while, I went back to my room.
Probably because I'd slept enough in the afternoon, even at midnight, I was still lying awake playing little games on my phone.
Suddenly, there was a ding - I received a message from Mr. Moretti.
He asked: [Are you asleep?]
I sent a head-shaking emoji.
The next second, Kane's call came through.
His magnetic voice came through the phone. "Why aren't you sleeping so late? Is something on your mind?"
I shook my head, then remembered he couldn't see me.
So I said to him, "Without you by my side, I'm still not quite used to it."
Kane paused for a moment, then chuckled softly. "I'll finish up the work here and come back to be with you as soon as possible, my dear baby."
I couldn't help blushing and hid under the covers.
"Okay, I'll wait for you."
