Chapter 89
When I picked up my phone, I saw Kane had sent me several messages.
My heart sank as I guessed he might be telling me he needed to handle some work.
After all, he was already discussing work when he left the room.
Sure enough, Kane had left the company two hours before I woke up.
He told me that after I woke up, I could use the phone on his desk to dial the second number in the phone book next to it, and someone would take me home.
But I didn't plan to do that.
I stretched, stood up, and opened the window. Standing on the top floor of Kane's company, I could almost overlook the entire city.
The tall buildings that I used to look up at now seemed so small. Finally, I didn't have to crane my neck to see them anymore.
Plus, it was almost 6 PM now, and I wanted to walk back slowly and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
I quickly changed my clothes and originally wanted to take the lunch box back to wash it.
But I didn't expect the lunch box to have already been washed, and there was even a note on it that said: "You don't need to take this back, we'll arrange for someone to handle it."
The handwriting didn't look like Kane's—it must have been his assistant.
Empty-handed and feeling light, I headed downstairs, which happened to be when Kane's company was getting off work.
I happened to run into Kelly.
Kelly hesitantly called out to me.
I turned around and looked at her with some confusion, blinking as if asking what was wrong.
Kelly said to me, "Thank you for giving me this opportunity."
I smiled and shook my head. "I didn't give you this opportunity—you got it because you're kind enough."
Kelly looked a bit embarrassed. "I've been working here for two years. I should have been promoted last time, but Lauren took credit for my work."
I was even more surprised, looking at Kelly with confusion. "If he treated you like that, why did you still speak up for him?"
Kelly sighed. "Everyone's just here to work and make money. I can't really blame him."
Once again, I recognized Kelly's kindness.
I reached out and gently shook her hand. "In work, as long as you work hard enough and seriously enough, you'll definitely get good returns."
Kelly looked at me and nodded.
She smiled and withdrew her hand, saying to me, "Mrs. Moretti, how are you getting back?"
I raised my hand and pointed at the sunset outside, glowing like gold, and said, "I'm planning to walk back slowly."
Kane's company wasn't very far from the estate—walking would take about half an hour to get home.
Hearing this, Kelly's eyes lit up. "Are you heading east? Maybe we can walk together for part of the way."
I smiled and nodded. Walking alone would be lonely, but with two people we could chat and laugh.
We walked outside by side.
I felt colleagues looking at me, and I moved a bit closer to Kelly, feeling uncomfortable.
Kelly was both kind and smart.
She sensed my discomfort and said to me, "They're just curious about what kind of person could become Mrs. Moretti, so they can't help but look at you a bit more."
I knew the truth wasn't quite what Kelly said.
Because I could clearly sense others' hostility, but since she'd smoothed things over like this, I didn't say anything more.
"By the way, about what Lauren mentioned regarding Alice, please don't take it to heart."
The sudden mention of Alice reminded me of the woman who was pregnant with Kane's child.
My mood sank a bit as I looked up at her. "Why did she come to see Kane? Was it because she's pregnant?"
Kelly's eyes showed surprise, then she seemed to realize something and nodded, but quickly explained, "After marrying you, Mr. Moretti hasn't had any contact with any of his previous female acquaintances."
Kelly seemed to realize she'd said the wrong thing. She pressed her lips together, looking a bit annoyed.
I laughed. "Oh, don't worry. I already knew about this because he bragged about it to my face a long time ago."
Kelly let out a long sigh of relief. I figured she must have been worried about saying the wrong thing in front of me.
She might have been afraid she'd fight with Kane when she got back, and then lose the job she'd just been promoted to.
She looked at me, still with some doubt in her eyes, and asked, "You're really not angry?"
I shook my head. "Kane handled this very well. I'm really not angry at all."
After all, before marrying Kane, I already knew what kind of person he was and what kind of past he had.
Now that he could do this much, I was already very satisfied.
Kelly looked at me with soft eyes. "You're really such a kind and good person."
Am I a good person?
I thought about it and silently denied it in my heart. I didn't think I could really be considered a truly good person.
At least I felt that a truly good person wouldn't be like me—using the little bit of power I gained through Kane to take revenge on those who used to bully me.
But at the same time, I didn't regret it at all.
If I were still that little nun from before, the unfair treatment I suffered wouldn't have changed one bit.
I might have even been bullied more severely.
Soon, Kelly and I reached the intersection.
I pointed in the opposite direction from her home and said, "I need to go this way. Looks like we have to say goodbye."
Kelly's eyes also showed reluctance.
She bowed deeply to me. "You're a very good person. I wish you and Mr. Moretti a long and happy life together."
Receiving this beautiful blessing made me very happy.
I was even humming a song when I got back to the estate.
So much so that I didn't notice there was someone who didn't belong to the estate standing outside, sneaking around, and peeking at something.
I only noticed her when I got closer.
I thought she was looking for Kane, so I took the initiative to ask, "Miss, what are you doing here? Are you looking for Mr. Moretti?"
My words seemed to startle the woman.
She turned to look at me as if she'd seen a ghost, stepped back several steps, then looked me over carefully.
Her gaze made me very uncomfortable. I couldn't help but frown. "Hello, can I help you with something?"
My tone got colder.
Recent experiences had taught me that being too friendly outside would only make others think you're easy to bully.
The woman looked at me for a while, then hurriedly covered her face and said, "Maybe I got the wrong person. Sorry."
With that, she turned and left.
Watching her somewhat panicked steps, I frowned, but didn't think much of it and went straight into the estate.
As I entered the estate, I saw Athena standing at the door waiting for me.
Athena was holding a letter in her hands. She respectfully handed it to me and said, "Mrs. Moretti, this is from your stepfather, Luca."
I inexplicably felt a bit nauseous and couldn't help clenching my fists.
Damn it, why was he writing to me?
There was nothing between us that needed communication.
But remembering the threats he'd made before, I reluctantly opened the letter.
There wasn't much content in the letter, just a photo of my mother with a line written on the back: "Time to send money. This is an early gift from me. Happy, right? Your birthday's coming up."
Looking at this line, a wave of nausea rose in my stomach.
Luca's fake sincerity really made me sick.
