Chapter 52

\- Thomas -

I was about to put in the last piece of clothing when the door flung open and some men lunged in

I recognised their leader. I threw my hands in exasperation, I was not fast enough

There was silence for a while as the man looked at me, then back at my bag

"Going for a vacation?" He asked, taking a few steps closer. "Oh, you are trying to get away from something? You seem to be in a hurry."

"That is none of your business," I replied. "And I am not trying to get away from anything. I am a traveller."

"You've hastily left your pack some months ago and you're hastily doing the same now?" He raised a brow. "You enjoy travelling the world a little too much. And in haste, too, I must add."

"What do you want, James?" I asked him.

"I am glad you asked," he replied opening his arms. "I thought I'd miss you. I am glad I didn't."

"You've not told me what you wanted."

"Oh yes, about that. I just want to have a word with you. Or maybe not me, but an invitation from the palace. I am sure you'd honour the throne."

"I am certain the Alpha does not have any business with me," I said.

"You are a very clever man, Thomas," James clapped his hands briefly. "But see, we're just going to have a little chat. Over some wine even and before you know it, we'd be done."

"Who sent you here?" I asked him.

"That is not important," he replied and I scoffed.

"I know Sophie sends you here. I thought you were the beta," I said. "Serving the throne and the pack. How are you now serving a woman?"

"Enough now," Jason frowned. "You're coming with me. I don't have much time."

I did not resist. I couldn't even if I wanted to. I was outnumbered and didn't stand a chance

They took me on a ride to a building hidden in the outskirts of the town

I was taken to a very spacious room that had only a table and two chairs on each side

I was asked to sit on one and while I was wondering what was going to happen, Sophie walked into the room in expensive clothes and jewellery

She sat on the other chair across the table and with a single sign of the hand, two glass cups were brought to the table, wine was served and I was given one while she took the other

Sophie looked at me for a moment and I held her eyes

"You don't greet the Luna?" She asked.

"You got your crown with a foul," I said boldly without flinching. "I don't respect that."

She did not react.

"Fair," she said simply. "But even you must know it took me a lot to be able to get to where I am today. And for that reason, I can do anything to maintain what I have worked for."

She took the glass and sipped the wine.

"You are supposed to be pregnant," I observed. "And you shouldn't be taking wine."

"Thank you for your concern," she said but took another sip

"I don't see any pregnancy, though," I added, and she smiled, but it did not reach her eyes. She dropped the glass, still holding my eyes

"Careful now," she said. "A loose tongue gets detached along with the head."

"What do you want from me?" I asked her. She adjusted on the seat and leaned closer.

"You know Doctor Mills and you know Aria as well. You know about the crimes they both were charged with," she started.

"Everyone knows," I cut in.

"Indeed," she agreed. "But you knew a little more than everyone. In fact, you were there when Doctor Mills helped Aria fake her death and helped her escape. You were a part of it all."

I looked around the room at the cold faces that stared down at me

"I am only a messenger," I said.

"You are a traitor," she interrupted with a nod. "You committed treason against the throne and the pack by helping a woman condemned by the law."

"That woman was the Luna, a pregnant innocent woman. Really pregnant. I was only helping."

Sophie relaxed back on the chair without taking her eyes off me.

"Your punishment and death will be slow and painful," she said. "You will be handed to the King with evidence of your involvement in the crimes, and I, as Luna, will tell the King what I think best suits you. I will make sure you die very painfully."

"I was told we were coming here to talk," I hit my hands lightly on the table. "Not threats of death."

"Oh we are still talking," she replied. "I am only telling you things that could happen if this conversation does not end well."

"What do you want from me?"

She took the glass again and sipped the wine very slowly, taking her time.

"Where is Aria?" She finally asked.

"I don't know where she is..."

She did not reply immediately.

"I thought you were a clever man Thomas. And I don't think you'd be so foolish as to think we don't know what we are doing, bringing you here to have a chat like people who have like minds, only for you to answer me like a child.

You don't have to die like the others. I mean, if we can have this conversation we should be able to come to an even ground with understanding.

You were with Aria when she left the pack. You helped her while Doctor Mills returned to cover up the act. Think about your answers as well as your head before you talk."

I looked at James and back at Sophie, regretting why I had not moved swiftly and they found me.

There was no negotiation with this she-devil, Sophie. She sat there calmly, sipping wine casually like we were talking about some random stuff.

And knowing what she is very much capable of, I knew I had to carefully sew my way out of this
