Chapter 47
Zamyr’s POV
The next morning we were standing in front of the library just as the sun appeared on the horizon.
“We’re here to ask an important question.”
“The Saints are waiting for you. Once you go inside, step into the circle.”
We obliged and waited until the eight Saints graced us with their presence.
“King Zamyr and General Gabriel, what a surprise.”
“We are here to ask some questions.”
“You only have one question. Make it count.”
“Is it true that there are books and artifacts hidden inside the veil that can be accessed by crossing it forcefully?”
“That’s absolutely right. A long time ago, when the veil was created, the most dangerous spells and artifacts were locked away. You can cross the veil forcefully, but nobody can force themselves inside the veil, apart from the woman in the prophecy.”
“Who’s that woman?”
“I cannot answer that question. I told you that you can ask me one question and I provided an answer for that question.”
“He asked his question, but I still haven’t asked mine.”
“You stepped into the circle together. That means, the two of you are together and the two of you have one question. Stepping inside separately gives you the right to ask two questions, one for each person.”
Before either of us could’ve said anything, the Saints were gone.
“Well, we were played by them.”
“At least we know that there were indeed objects inside that veil and there’s a strong possibility that Savannah knows everything that was written inside those books.”
“Yes, but for now we can’t tell this to anyone. You can never know who’s a spy or has ill intentions.”
“No, not until we’re sure that Savannah won’t get hurt.”
“I don’t think that can happen if she’s that strong. Anyway, let’s go back and snoop around a bit.”
I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant by snooping around when he got the order to stay invisible, but he might have a plan.
“Gabriel, what if she attacks again? What’s your plan?”
“Let’s hope she won’t do that, because then we'll have to leave as quickly as possible. She’s too strong. That’s why we need to be invisible.”
“So, that’s your big plan?”
“Do you have a better idea?”
“Well, not really, but is there a way to make her remember?”
“Perhaps, through dreams, but that requires an insane amount of power. I can do that, but I’d be useless for at least a day and that means we’re totally defenseless.”
“We need to try.”
“We will, but not right away. Dalia can’t do anything and maybe Savannah will have doubts after yesterday and won’t just blindly believe her lies.”
I really hoped Gabriel was right about waiting a little more. We still needed to get information about those objects that were inside the veil. What if all the knowledge will be too much for Savannah? What if she decides to use it for evil? What if eventually Dalia makes her believe those awful lies? My mind was spiraling and conjuring the worst case scenarios. I knew that Savannah was one of the strongest and craftiest women I had the pleasure knowing, but still. Everyone has a limit after which the person just snaps.
“Stop thinking about the worst.”
“How did you know?”
“It was written on your face. You can’t turn back time, nor can you see the future. Let’s just concentrate on the present and what we can do, not on what we can’t.”
“How can you be so calm, Gabriel?”
“Trust me, I’m anything but calm. I just need my head to be clear.”
“You’re much younger than me, yet I feel like a little boy just now.”
“I’m used to these tough situations. During the years I’ve been General, we were called to solve conflicts. Not all of them were just silly little disputes between neighbors. To avoid war, clarity was necessary. This journey will be hard, but everyone needs to stay strong. Especially us. Only the two of us can make Savannah see the truth.”
Savannah’s POV
Dalia was furious yet again when I told her that I won’t steal the book from the Sacred Library. It was after lunchtime when she stormed into the living room and demanded that I go back for that book. I cursed my own stupidity for saying that the solution can be found in a book. I should’ve just told her that nobody knows how to destroy the veil. In the morning everything was fine, but then she just kind of snapped and now she cannot be stopped. I would’ve told her to go and get the book by herself, but I decided against it. It was still unclear who’s been feeding me the lies. Pushing her buttons definitely wouldn't do me any good in the long run.
“Why are you this useless?”
“I’m not trying to be useless, I just don’t want to steal.”
“And why not? I gave you everything.”
“I know and I really appreciate what you’ve done for me, but stealing from the Sacred Library is lowly, even for you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Don’t push me.”
“Honestly, Dalia, I’ve had enough of your behavior. You lost your powers and you have to face it. You just want to use me. I made an army because of you. I went to the Sacred Library because of you. I’m not sure that I even want to destroy the veil.”
“I see. Then if I were to sell you out to be slaughtered would you accept it?”
“Is that even a question? Who’d like to die. Honestly, I can’t even decide who’s been lying to me. There are so many gaps and I received two different stories.”
“I have things to do. You should take time and think. I made some special smoothie for you. It should help with regaining your memories.”
Murmuring something else she left. I might’ve gone too far this time, but I didn’t care anymore. I drank the smoothie she made and some time later I was feeling sleepy. She probably put some magic into that smoothie. I went to my bedroom and sleep soon consumed me.
“Let’s leave her here. I regret giving birth, but I didn’t know I was pregnant until it was too late.”
“I don’t care what you do with her. I’d be happy if she just died. We can have more kids who won’t be abominations.”
“That’s right love. She’s a monster, nothing more.”
I woke up with tears streaming down my face. Those people had to be my birth parents. They called me an abomination, a monster. Were they right though? Was I really a monster? This had to be a memory of mine. This meant that Dalia’s concoction was working. I wanted to see more of my memories. Was my life truly this terrible? There had to be a spell that could quicken the process. I went to look for Dalia and she was in the living room going through a book.
“Your concoction was working. I saw a glimpse of my childhood memories. Is there a way to quicken the process?”
“You can’t do that. Too much flashback at once can put you in a coma. If you continue drinking it, sooner or later you’ll get all of your memories back.”
“Fine, I’ll be patient. What are you reading?”
“I’m just trying to find more information for our quest. I found something interesting though.”
“What is it?”
“There’s a way to siphon the powers of the other supernatural creatures. A powerful witch needs to create an orb that collects the power. The person who owns the orb can siphon the powers stored in it and use anywhere, anytime without fearing depletion.”
“What’s your plan?”
“Create the orb and collect all the powers that can be found in the world.”
“Aren’t you too greedy, Dalia? Wielding that much magic must have serious consequences.”
“There’s nothing listed in the book.”
“That doesn’t mean it’s not real. Who will create the orb?”
“You of course. The spell is in the Sacred Library. You have to get it.”
“Any if the Saints ask why I need the spell?”
“Tell them something believable.”
“Fine, I’ll see what I can do, but no promises.”
