Chapter 34 THE SIEGE OF HEAVEN
Chapter 34 THE SIEGE OF HEAVEN
I climbed out of the mud," Kaelen said, his voice cutting through the thinning oxygen of the high atmosphere. "Now, I’m climbing the stars."
The Aurelian Coalition’s fleet was a jagged scar across the golden horizon. Thousands of iron-clad airships, powered by refined Abyssal ore, hummed in a synchronized vibration that rattled the very foundations of the clouds. Above them, Celestia—the Holy City—floated like a taunting diamond, its marble spires piercing the heavens.
"Master, we’re within the kill zone," Thorne said, his voice a low rumble. His skin was now patterned with iridescent, obsidian scales, and his eyes held the predatory glow of a Dragon-Knight. He adjusted his grip on a hammer that bled violet lightning. "The city’s automated defense beams are locking on. One word, and we raise the shields."
"Don't bother with shields, Thorne," Kaelen replied, his platinum-gold scales reflecting the harsh celestial light. "We aren't here to play defense."
"The Elven fleet is flanking the Western spires," Jax reported, his fingers flying across a holographic display of mana-flows. "But Kaelen, the energy readings from the main gate... it’s the Eternal Seal. It’s a continental-class barrier. Even the Original Dragon God couldn't crack that from the outside."
"Then it’s a good thing we aren't on the outside," Kaelen said.
Suddenly, the golden clouds above the city parted. Four figures descended, draped in armor that seemed to be forged from the sun itself. The Angelic Generals. Their twelve wings spanned the width of the main gates, and their faces were masks of immortal, cold perfection.
"Halt, parasite!" the lead General’s voice boomed, a sonic wave that cracked the windshields of the lead airships. "You stand before the throne of the Light. You are but a worm, Kaelen Aurelian. A scrapper who found a few discarded scales in the dirt. Did you truly believe your 'Coalition' of mud-dwellers and heretics could touch the hem of the Divine?"
Kaelen stepped off the deck of his flagship, hovering in the open air. He didn't use a flight spell; the air simply obeyed his presence.
"I’m not here for your hem, General," Kaelen said, his voice carrying an absolute, terrifying authority. "I’m here to collect a debt. Five hundred years of stolen mana, five hundred years of false 'miracles,' and the blood of my father. I’ve come to balance the books."
"Arrogance!" the General laughed, a sound like glass breaking. "The Eternal Seal is fueled by the purity of the heavens. It has stood since the First Age. Your ships will burn, your 'Knights' will fall, and you will return to the mud you crawled from. We will watch your failure from the balconies of paradise."
"The Eternal Seal?" Kaelen tilted his head, a predatory smile touching his lips. "You mean the barrier powered by the High-Grade Mana-Crystals that the Church of Light buys from the Western Ridge?"
The General’s eyes flickered. "The Church provides the tithe. It is the natural order."
"The natural order just changed," Kaelen barked. "Jax, give the General a status report on his power supply."
Jax grinned, tapping a final command. "General, check your intake valves. You’ve been running on 'Aurelian-Grade' crystals for the last three months. Every single one of them was pre-loaded with a dormant Abyssal frequency."
"What?" the General shrieked, looking back at the massive, glowing gates.
"Ladder Level 6," Kaelen said, his wings snapping open with a metallic ring. "Global Shadow Power. I didn't just buy the mines, General. I bought the logistics. I’ve had a monopoly on Celestia’s mana-supply since I took the Royal Treasury. I didn't need to break your gates."
"You... you corrupted the tithe?"
"I refined it," Kaelen corrected. "I used the monopoly to turn your own defense system into a giant, ticking bomb. Jax! Trigger the resonance!"
"Resonance triggered!" Jax yelled.
A high-pitched, crystalline scream erupted from the Holy City. The pearlescent white of the Eternal Seal suddenly turned a violent, bruised purple. The runes etched into the marble began to hiss and melt. Instead of keeping the world out, the seal began to collapse inward, the Abyssal frequency eating the 'Holy' light from the inside out.
"The gates!" the second General screamed, his wings singed by the sudden flare of dark energy. "The mechanisms are seizing! We’re losing control!"
"You thought you were gods because you sat in a high chair," Kaelen said, his platinum scales glowing with an incandescent heat. "But you forgot who builds the chairs. The Siege of Heaven isn't a battle. It’s an eviction."
"You... you scrapper! We will slaughter you where you stand!" The Generals raised swords of star-fire and lunged.
"Thorne! Show them what a 'worm' looks like when it grows wings!" Kaelen commanded.
Thorne let out a war cry that drowned out the collapsing seal. He launched from the ship like a projectile, his Dragon-Knight wings creating a shockwave that sent the Angelic Generals reeling. He swung his hammer mid-flight, the violet lightning connecting with the lead General’s shield.
BOOM.
The 'Divine' shield shattered like cheap porcelain.
"For the Pit!" Thorne roared.
The massive, star-iron gates of Celestia—the doors that had been shut to the world for half a millennium—began to creak. The Abyssal corruption forced the gears to turn in reverse. With a sound like a dying god’s last breath, the gates swung wide.
"The way is open!" Jax shouted.
"All ships, forward!" Kaelen’s voice echoed across the sky. "Take the spires! Reclaim the marrow!"
Thorne landed on the marble courtyard of Heaven first, his hammer slamming into the ground and creating a crater in the 'perfect' street. Behind him, thousands of Dragon-Knights and Elven Sentinels flooded into the city, their war cries shattering the silence of the divine realm.
"No! This is the Holy City!" the Generals wailed, retreating toward the palace.
Kaelen landed slowly at the center of the gate, his shadow stretching over the golden streets. He didn't look at the retreating angels. He looked at the palace at the end of the road—the place where the 'Light' was hiding.
"Check the ledger, General," Kaelen whispered. "Heaven is officially bankrupt."
But as the Coalition pushed deeper, the sky above the palace began to turn a terrifying, blood-red. A massive, cold pressure—greater than anything they had felt in the Abyss—began to descend.
"Master!" Jax’s voice was a scream of pure terror over the gem. "The energy readings! Something is coming through the ceiling of the world! It’s not an angel! It’s—"
The ground beneath Kaelen’s feet cracked. A beam of darkness, so pure it looked like a hole in reality, shot down from the highest spire, incinerating everything in its path.
Kaelen’s wings snapped shut, his eyes narrowing as he looked into the dark beam.
"So," Kaelen said, his voice cold and final. "The real owners finally showed up."
The suspense was a physical weight as a new figure began to materialize within the dark beam—something that made the gods themselves look like children. The Siege had only just begun, and the true price of the stars was about to be paid in blood.
