Chapter 20 SECRET TUNNELS AND TREASON
The cold relief of their political victory evaporated the moment Dorian and Serra stepped inside his private study. The triumph in the Council Hall had been public, but the new danger was intimately private. Dorian locked the door with a final, metallic thud.
"We revealed the shield, but Vespera is not silenced," Dorian said, placing the Origin Seal recovered from Marius onto the desk. "Her eyes promised revenge. The real enemy is now hidden inside the palace, working through Vespera and Elara."
Serra sat beside Dorian. The Ritual Parchment from Dorian’s father lay on the desk. "The ritual requires the blood of the lineage who created the curse. That means, to break your curse, my blood is required."
Dorian shook his head. "We also need an emotional zenith. The ritual demands the pure essence of seven years of suppressed desperation. This is the truth Vespera will exploit."
Serra’s gaze hardened. She pointed to the empty silver inkwell on the desk. "She has infiltrated your office with an agent. That empty silver inkwell confirms her new poison. This place is no longer secure."
(THE DESCENT INTO SECRECY)
"We must get away from their eyes," Dorian agreed, his voice strained. He opened the hidden plate on the marble floor of the study, revealing the narrow, centuries-old stone staircase. "These tunnels are the only place our systems can't listen and where the Pack’s eyes cannot reach. We will prepare the ritual there."
Serra looked at the dark, fresh silver burn on the back of Dorian’s arm. "Your Alpha power isn't reliable in the damp air. I am going first, Warden. The second installment of your debt to break your shield will be paid by me clearing the path of danger."
Dorian allowed her to proceed. Serra swiftly slipped down the narrow stairs. In the darkness, her Red Alpha senses activated. She ran her hand over the damp stone floor, tracing the barely visible, almost invisible silver wire stretched across the path.
Serra sliced the wire instantly. Dorian rushed down the stairs, catching her and pulling her against him. This time, not for anger, but for relief mixed with fear.
"You almost died!" Dorian whispered, his breath hot in Serra's hair. "How did you see that silver wire? In this damn darkness!"
"Because my blood senses silver, Alpha," Serra whispered back.
(FORCED INTIMACY: THE EMOTIONAL ZENITH)
Dorian, holding her close in the cramped tunnel entrance, locked his eyes onto Serra’s. "We have no time for foreplay. We must decide how to create that emotional zenith now."
Serra knew the stakes. "We use hatred and desperation. Show me the man who suffered for seven years."
Dorian pulled her into an unforgiving embrace. The tunnel forced their bodies together. "I will give you the deepest truth of my loneliness. Now, you give me yours."
(THE RITUAL EXPLOSION AND ESCAPE)
"Unleash all your hatred, Luna!"
Serra’s hand connected with the Origin Seal over Dorian’s heart. This was the first true union; not a kiss, but a searing necessity. Serra channeled all her power and seven years of vengeance into the contact. Dorian instantly seized up in agony. The seal turned black, then shifted to a silver glow as it met the Red Alpha energy.
Dorian’s Alpha power burst out, like water escaping a sealed gate. His roar, controlled by Serra's hatred, echoed through the tunnels.
Above, the marble floor plate was violently pulled open by Vespera and her agents. Vespera’s voice, thick with fury and shock, boomed: "They are here! The Alpha lost control! Descend!"
Dorian's body convulsed. His power was still contained, but the effort was immense. "The seal is stabilizing! Go! Now!"
Serra pushed hard on a brick protrusion in the tunnel wall. A hidden passage opened, leading to a larger, older tunnel running along an underground river.
"From here! Quickly!" Serra yelled.
(THE BLUFF AND THE NEW DEMAND)
Vespera and her two agents scrambled down the main stairs. The entry of the tunnel was filled with the metallic smell of smoke and raw, uncontrolled Alpha energy.
"The roar stopped," Vespera hissed. "What happened? Did the curse break?"
"No! The scent is too controlled! They're retreating!" an agent yelled.
Serra pulled Dorian into the secret passage. He was utterly exhausted, his body shaking.
"We didn't break the curse," Dorian gasped. "We only silenced it. But you..." Dorian gripped Serra's hands. "You understand how the shield works. That bought us time."
"And Vespera now thinks the shield is cracking," Serra replied, her eyes bright with triumph.
Dorian’s mouth curved into a hungry smile. "At the beginning of this adventure, I only expected obedience. Now, my life depends on your intellect. Your first installment is not enough, Luna. I want more."
Serra stood firm in the underground river tunnel, facing Dorian's sudden, uncontrolled desire. "Then you will get the second installment, Warden. But only when I am ready."
