Chapter 19 THE COUNCIL’S PRICE
Dorian’s private study was cold and silent, a stark contrast to the breakfast hall. On the table lay the Origin Seal recovered from Marius; it was cold, ancient, and now simply the key to a shield rather than the sign of a curse.
Serra walked toward the desk. Her Beta mask was gone; only the sharp intelligence of a political ally remained. "Vespera and Elara are gathering the Council this morning," Serra said, her voice clear. "They will use the chaos of Marius's arrest to question your leadership. They won't question the curse; they will question the legitimacy of your rule."
Dorian paused while putting on his jacket. Learning that the burden he had carried for seven years was a shield made him feel less like an Alpha and more like a child protected by his father. "My father's lies protected me. But what do I do now? How do I explain that seal to the Council?"
Serra approached Dorian. Her hand did not touch the real seal on his chest but hovered near it. "You won't explain the curse. You will explain the shield. Your father's letter states that your restricted power was necessary to shield you from the Council's influence. Use this to prove their guilt."
Dorian understood. This wasn't just a tactic; it was emotional manipulation. "You are paying your debt, Luna. What is the price of this installment?"
"The price is honesty in the Council Hall, Dorian," Serra replied. "Face the reality that you are a warrior without a mask. Your true power is not your restricted strength, but the courage to wield your father's legacy against the Council's treason."
(THE COUNCIL HALL: THE COUNTER-CHALLENGE)
The Council Hall was filled with icy silence. Marius's arrest had split the Council. Vespera and Elara stood in the center of the room.
"High Alpha Volcan," Vespera's voice was frigid. "Marius’s arrest has plunged the Pack into chaos. This necessitates questioning your leadership. Are these rumors of restricted power true? How can the Pack accept a leader who does not possess full Alpha strength?"
Dorian walked toward the center of the Council. Serra was beside him. Dorian's posture carried the weight of the honesty he had read in his father's letter, replacing his former arrogance.
Dorian pulled the Origin Seal from his jacket. The silver shimmered.
"This seal," Dorian said. His voice resonated not with Alpha power, but with authority. "Is not a curse, as the Pack has been led to believe. This is a shield that my father, High Alpha Cassius, created to protect me from the corruption of the Council members who seek to compromise the Pack's leadership."
"Lies!" Elara screamed. "It is a seal of weakness!"
Serra stepped forward. "No, it is a seal of honesty," Serra countered, turning toward Elara. "Pack leadership means the ability to control power. And this seal restricted Dorian's power only from the influence of outside greed and pressure. Marius sought to break this shield. This was his act of treason."
Serra speaking so openly in the Council Hall shocked everyone. It was unprecedented for a Luna to enter the political debate so aggressively.
Dorian held the seal. "Your Pack has been lied to. This shield was implemented to protect against the Council’s attempt to seize the Pack’s power. My restricted power has only been restricted from the Pack's corrupting influence."
(THE DEBT PAID AND THE RITUAL'S DEMANDS)
Dorian returned the seal to his pocket. The Council fell silent. Elara and Vespera were defeated.
Dorian left the Council Hall, with Serra beside him.
"You paid your debt, Luna," Dorian said. "You gave me the courage to speak honestly. Now, it's my turn to pay my debt to the outside world."
Serra touched Dorian's arm. "Your greatest debt is not to me, Dorian. Your greatest debt is to remain loyal to your father's legacy. And to the peace of the Pack."
These words reshaped Dorian’s Alpha identity. He was no longer a cursed Alpha but a powerful leader, supported by his Luna, standing against the Council's treason and upholding his father's legacy.
Serra looked at the Ritual Parchment on the desk. The way to break the curse lay through her most profound, most uncontrollable emotional moments. She knew Dorian had suppressed his feelings for seven years.
"We will continue the lie, Dorian," Serra said. "But this time, to disrupt Vespera's plan. Take the ritual texts. Keep them secret. Tonight, we will use the palace's secret tunnels. This must be a place where Vespera's eyes cannot reach. We will prepare the curse ritual where the Pack cannot watch."
Dorian's face lit up with that familiar admiration for Serra's dangerous intelligence. "Is that the new Alpha's decision, Luna?"
Serra stood and looked into Dorian's eyes. "No, Alpha. This is the second installment of your debt to break your own shield."
