Chapter 15: First Step into the Trap
Dawn broke slowly, casting a golden glow that infiltrated through the cracks in the window of the quiet room. The first rays of the sun played on the dust floating in the air, creating soft shadows that moved on the walls.
Sofia stands in front of a small mirror hanging crookedly in the corner of the room, the dim light reflecting a face she barely recognizes anymore. Her eyes are puffy, and the dark circles underneath are prominent from the sleepless night. Her skin is pale, contrasting with the faint sheen of her hair that hangs wearily over her shoulders.
She sighed softly, her gaze fixed on the fragile image of herself. However, deep inside, she knew fragile was not the right word to describe her feelings. Dario’s plan kept spinning around and around in his head like a spinning wheel. Every detail, every risk, and the worst possibilities haunted his mind, making his heart beat irregularly.
Imagining herself as bait-as live bait to lure Ricardo out of the darkness-made her stomach twist with nausea she couldn’t quell. The fear was real, running through her body like a cold fog that she couldn’t shake off. But more than that, a realization hit her like an ocean wave hitting the shore: she was now part of this deadly game she had never chosen to enter.
Sofia is at the center of two dangerous worlds that collide—Dario's world of conspiracy and revenge and Ricardo’s world of mercilessness—and somehow, she is the center of them.
Sofia looked down at her hands, noticing how her fingers trembled slightly, a painful reminder of the fear that hid behind her calm face. She pressed hard on the side of the wooden table in front of her, trying to shift her focus and control the trembling. The rough wood under her palms felt real, giving her a little strength to resist the trepidation slowly overtaking her.
If there was one thing Sofia knew about herself, she never backed down, no matter how daunting the path ahead. With a deep breath, she lifted her chin a little higher, trying to convince herself she dared to face anything. Now, she was fighting for herself and to ensure that this plan succeeded.
As the morning light grew stronger, sweeping away the last shadows of the night, Sofia knew that she could no longer let doubt overcome her. Today is the day of determination, and no matter how scary or big the risk is, Sofia decides to face it all with her head held high. Because amidst all the uncertainty, one thing is sure: wwon’tgive up without a fight.
Dario is already waiting in the living room, sitting casually on the worn-out sofa. His gaze seems blank, but Sofia knows it’s just his way of masking all the burdens he carries. He’s wearing a black shirt that fits his body perfectly, giving the impression of being ready for battle even though his face betrays fatigue.
Marco stood in the corner of the room with his weapon at his waist and a suspicious expression that never left his face. As Sofia entered, both men turned their attention to her.
“Are you ready?” asked Dario, his tone neutral, though his eyes scrutinised Sofia to ensure she wasn’t afraid.
Sofia nodded, even though her heart was screaming to escape. “I'm ready.”
Marco grumbled, his arms folded across his chest. “This is crazy. We're trusting someone who clearly has secrets of his own.”
Dario glanced at Marco, his eyes narrowing. “If you want to protect her, then trust me. I won't let anything happen to Sofia.”
“I'll believe it when I see it,” Marco replied sharply.
Dario reiterated the plan’s steps, ensuring Sofia remembered every detail. She will be taken to a location known as one of Ricardo’s headquarters. Dario feigns surrender, offering Sofia a sign of submission to gain Ricardo’s trust. However, when Ricardo shows up to approve the deal, Dario and his team will attack, capture Ricardo alive, and end his devious game.
“Listen, Sofia,” Dario says softly as they stand in front of the car that will take them away. “This is going to be difficult. Ricardo won’t trust easily. You have to stay strong, no matter what he says or does.”
Sofia looked up at him, her eyes teary but full of determination. “I will do it. Not for you, Dario, but for myself. I want all this to end.”
Dario nodded, respecting the courage he saw in her. “I'll be there every moment. You're not alone.”
The silence in the car felt like a burden. Dario sat next to Sofia in the back seat, while Marco drove with a tense expression. The sight of the forest turning into a small town in the distance felt like a metaphor for the shift from safety to danger.
Sofia steals a glance at Dario. His face remained stern, but there was a softness at the corners of his lips, making Sofia wonder if he understood the extent of what he was risking.
“You know,” Sofia finally says, breaking the silence. “If this fails, we could all die.”
Dario turned to her, his expression remaining severe. “I know. But I also know that we have no other choice.”
Sofia chuckled, though there was no humor in her voice. “You always know everything, huh?”
“I have to know, Sofia. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to protect you.”
His words stab Sofia with guilt. Part of her wants to trust him, but another part still has doubts.
They arrived at a large warehouse on the city’s outskirts, an old building with large steel doors and graffiti on the outer walls. Marco parked the car a few meters away while Dario led Sofia out.
“Follow me, stay close,” Dario whispered, his voice almost a sigh.
Sofia nodded, her legs feeling heavy as if carrying a rock. As they entered the warehouse, the air inside was cold, gripping Sofia’s skin like icy claws.
Several men stood inside, all holding weapons with wary expressions. One of them, a man with a long scar on his left cheek, stepped forward.
“Dario Moretti,” he said, his voice hoarse. “You've finally surrendered too.”
Dario nodded briefly. “I'm here to make a deal.”
The man glanced at Sofia, then smiled broadly, making Sofia’s stomach churn. “And this... is the prize?”
Dario nodded again, though his expression remained flat. “He is my proof of loyalty. I just wanted to talk directly to Ricardo.”
The scar chuckled. “You know he's not easy to reach.”
“Tell him I’m here,” Dario replied in a cold tone that made the atmosphere tense.
The man hesitated momentarily, then nodded to one of his subordinates before going to a door in the corner of the warehouse.
Sofia stood near Dario, her breathing heavy. She could feel the aura of menace in every corner of this room, and she knew they only had one chance to succeed.
