Chapter 16: The Shadow of Ricardo
The air inside the warehouse feels heavy, almost as if something invisible is pressing against Sofia’s chest. The smell of metal mixed with the scent of rotting wood and oil overwhelmed her sense of smell, making it difficult to breathe. The fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling vibrate softly, emitting a faint hum that adds to the uncomfortable atmosphere in the room.
Sofia stood at Dario’s side, her body rigid as a statue. Her feet felt like they were nailed to the cold concrete floor. She tried to catch her breath, but her heart was beating so fast that it wanted to jump out of her chest. The voice echoed in her ears, overpowering every other sound in the room.
Several armed men stood around them, forming a tight circle. Every little movement Sofia made felt like it was under the scrutiny of their piercing gazes. Their faces were stern, full of lines that reflected a rough and ruthless life. Their eyes didn't just watch; they assessed, analyzed, and looked for signs of weakness. Sofia knew that one wrong move could spell disaster.
“Just relax,” Dario whispered in an almost inaudible voice, like a gentle breeze in the middle of a storm. He doesn’t turn to her, keeping his gaze straight ahead, full of confidence that Sofia envies. “Show me that you’re not afraid.”
The words sound simple, but they feel like an almost impossible challenge to Sofia. How could she look calm when every part of her body screamed to escape this place?
Her hands trembled slightly at her sides, and she did her best to hide that weakness. She tried to take a deep breath, but the air in this room felt too thick, like inhaling a dense fog that refused to enter her lungs.
However, something in Dario’s tone calmed him down a little, if only a little. It wasn’t an empty command but a warning and perhaps an encouragement. He glanced at the man out of the corner of his eye. Dario’s face remained calm, like an impenetrable mask. Despite the tense situation around them, he radiated an unshakable confidence, and for a moment, Sofia felt that she had to believe not just in Dario but also in herself.
The door at the end of the warehouse finally opened with a long creak, signalling the presence of the figure waiting. Two men in black suits entered first, their postures large and robust, before someone smaller but much more intimidating followed behind them.
Ricardo appeared; his face looked ordinary, but his eyes held something cold and deadly. His suit was immaculate, and his every move exuded power without the need to speak.
He stopped a few meters away, his eyes immediately fixed on Sofia before moving to Dario. “Dario Moretti,” he said in a soft yet threatening voice. “I didn’t expect you to have the guts to come here.”
Dario showed no emotion. “I’m here to finish this, Ricardo. Do you want me to give up? I give up.”
Ricardo narrowed his eyes, his gaze returning to Sofia. “And this... who is she?”
Dario stepped half a step forward as if to protect Sofia. “She is proof of my good intentions. You know he was part of this mess. I brought her as a sign that I mean business.”
Ricardo smiled slightly, a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Very generous of you. But how do I know you’re not hiding something?”
Sofia could feel the tension in the air. Ricardo stepped closer, now only a few steps away from her. He reached out, lifting Sofia’s chin with his cold fingers.
“You look scared, Bella,” he said mockingly. “Did Dario get you into this mess?”
Sofia held her breath. She knew this was a crucial moment. One mistake, and it would all be over.
“I just want this to be over,” Sofia replied, her voice trembling but firm enough to hold Ricardo’s gaze. “I don’t care what you guys do as long as I can be free.”
Ricardo chuckled, lowering his hand. “Interesting answer.”
Dario took over the conversation. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to show my loyalty. Including giving Sofia away.”
Sofia turned her head, looking at Dario with wide eyes. His words were so cold, as if he meant it. Her heart sank, even though she knew this was only part of the plan.
Ricardo seemed to think for a moment. “Interesting. But I don’t believe in words alone, Moretti. You know that.”
“What do I have to do to prove it?” asked Dario, his tone remaining firm.
Ricardo smiled slightly, making Sofia feel like a small bird under an eagle’s gaze. “You’ll know when the time comes.”
He turned around, stepping away casually, but stopped before reaching the door. “Oh, and one more thing.”
Ricardo turned his head, his gaze returning to Sofia. “Make sure she doesn’t try to escape. If he does, you’ll know what happened.”
Dario just nodded. As Ricardo left the room, Sofia felt relieved, if only momentarily.
When they were finally alone, Sofia turned to Dario with eyes full of emotion. “What do you mean by that? Are you going to give me up?”
Dario looked at her calmly. “It’s just part of the plan.”
“Part of the plan?” Sofia almost shouted. “You have no idea how I feel when he touches me like that! I feel like... like I’m worthless.”
Sofia’s broken tone made Dario approach her, gently grasping her shoulders. “Listen to me. I know this is hard. But I swear I won’t let him hurt you. I’ll make sure you get out of this safely.”
Sofia closed her eyes, holding back the tears already welling up. “I don’t know if I can trust you anymore, Dario.”
Dario looked hurt to hear that, but he didn’t deny it. Instead, he just said, “I’ll prove it. You’ll see for yourself.”
As the night wore on, Dario and Sofia sat together in the small room reserved for them. Sofia still felt wary but knew she had to cooperate with him.
“Tomorrow,” Dario says quietly, breaking the silence. “Ricardo will test us. He always does that. But we must remain calm.”
Sofia nodded, though fear still loomed over her. “What will happen if we fail?”
Dario looked at her for a long time before answering. “I won’t let that happen.”
Although his words were confident, Sofia knew this game had no guarantees. And for the first time, she wondered if they could get out of this alive.
