Chapter 118 No Pity at All
Scarlett's breath caught. She grabbed Sarah's hand and pulled her behind her.
"Mr. Wilson, how impressive. Should we apologize to the honorable Ms. Brown?"
Daniel was wearing a black mask, so his full expression wasn't visible, but his handsome face beneath the mask was clearly tense.
He frowned, about to speak, when Alice waved her hand.
"Scarlett, Daniel just cares too much about the baby in my belly. The baby is innocent. Even if Ms. Johnson and Scarlett don't like me, they shouldn't take it out on an unborn baby..."
"If you really cared about the child, you wouldn't be doing terrible things while pregnant. You should know the baby in your belly is connected to your wicked heart, watching and learning everything!"
Scarlett cut Alice off. She'd never seen such an immoral pregnant woman!
Sarah nodded in agreement. "You have no morals yourself, so what are you pretending for now? All day long you keep mentioning your unborn child, as if you want the whole world to know that you, Alice, can get pregnant and have a baby, right?"
With their back-and-forth attacks, Alice looked helpless, tears falling as her body swayed toward Daniel.
She knew Daniel wouldn't let her fall to the ground.
And indeed, he reached out to steady her.
"Daniel, I..."
Alice pushed further, murmuring softly as she closed her eyes and let her legs go weak, leaning into Daniel's arms.
Daniel frowned as he supported her, glancing toward the car.
The driver was about to come get Alice, but Scarlett didn't want to watch anymore.
Just then, an empty taxi drove by. She grabbed Sarah and walked away.
"Put her in the car."
The driver came over, and Daniel pushed the unconscious Alice in his arms toward him. He turned to chase after Scarlett, only to see she'd already gotten in the taxi, which drove off.
Daniel took a few steps after her, but Scarlett clearly didn't want to talk to him, rolling up the window without even glancing in his direction.
Remembering what she'd said about him being a good ex-husband and staying out of her sight, Daniel's eyes flashed with gloom as he stopped.
Meanwhile, in the car.
Sarah was still angrily cursing. "Daniel is getting better and better at pretending, even wearing a big mask! Does he think the mask can hide his stupidity?"
Scarlett fell silent.
"And that damn bitch Alice, fainting so conveniently! Besides faking faints, what else can she do? Daniel must be blind not to see through it. Scarlett, you shouldn't have stopped me. I should've spit on her to see if that damn bitch Alice could keep up the act!"
Sarah was still fuming. Scarlett rolled up the window, a mocking smile playing at her lips.
Daniel might not be unable to tell Alice was faking, but he cared about Alice. Even knowing, he was willing to be deceived.
"Alright, let's quickly find a pharmacy so I can treat your wound. Don't let it scar."
Sarah didn't care. "If it scars, it scars. No big deal."
Scarlett tapped her. "You study martial arts and got into film school—do you really want to be a stunt double forever? Our goal is to be in front of the camera, on the big screen! I'm waiting for you to become a big star. Have you ever seen a female star covered in scars?"
"True. Will this scrape leave a scar? If it really does, I'll curse that damn bitch Alice even in my sleep."
"Alice is desperate to make it in entertainment. Work hard, get more popular than her, and that'll be revenge for me."
Scarlett encouraged Sarah, who completely agreed, suddenly feeling the weight of responsibility. She said, "Actually, there's an opportunity recently. A supporting role in a production fell through, and Jenny said she'd introduce me to the director."
Daniel watched their car drive away, then walked back to his vehicle.
The driver had already laid Alice down in the back seat and opened the door for Daniel.
But Daniel didn't get in. He looked down at Alice lying there and instructed the driver.
"Take her back to The Brown Mansion. Give Reid a message: he'll have to figure out the rest of the investment himself."
The driver responded, "Yes, Mr. Wilson."
He was about to close the door when Alice, who'd been lying there unconscious, suddenly opened her eyes and sat up, propping herself against the seat.
"Daniel, I think I just heard you say you're withdrawing the investment. Did I hear wrong?"
The investment Daniel promised the Brown family was to be injected in three phases.
He'd only put in the first payment so far. Without more funds flowing in, the Brown Group would face a broken capital chain.
Once such a financial crisis hit, given the Brown family's current situation, bankruptcy wasn't out of the question.
How could this be?
"Done pretending?"
Daniel stared at the seemingly weak Alice, his eyes cold.
Alice's nails dug into her palms. Panicking inside, she tried to cover her guilt, crying, "Daniel, I didn't..."
But Daniel didn't want to hear her excuses. He turned to leave.
Now Alice was truly desperate. She got out of the car and chased after him, trying to grab his arm, saying anxiously, "Investing in the Brown Group was a condition you agreed to! You can't go back on your word."
Daniel's gaze swept over her, his eyes like blades.
Alice's hand froze there, not daring to touch him.
Daniel looked away, saying coldly, "You don't understand boundaries. I made the boundaries clear. Didn't I tell you not to provoke Scarlett again?"
A chill spread through Alice's entire body along her spine. Daniel had indeed said that.
Last time in her room, he'd said if she provoked Scarlett again, whatever he gave, he could take back.
But back then, Scarlett was still his wife.
Now they were divorced. Scarlett was no longer his wife.
Given Daniel's status, Scarlett had embarrassed him like that. She didn't deserve his protection and affection.
Why was he still making such a big deal for Scarlett's sake?
"Daniel, you can't do this. The Brown and Wilson families have been friends for so many years. You're cutting off the Brown family's lifeline! Besides, I didn't provoke Scarlett. I really didn't know anything—Laura didn't tell me! And Scarlett's fine anyway."
The livestream had just gotten started when that crazy Sarah snatched the phone away.
She'd exposed everything on the spot. Now online, everyone was cursing Natalia and Marc.
Laura had been taken in too, and who knew if she could be bailed out.
Comparatively, Scarlett was completely unharmed.
Why, after all this, was Daniel still withdrawing investment from the Brown Group?
Alice felt grief and resentment. Waves of dizziness hit her, her face turning pale, as if she might really faint.
Daniel just glanced at her. "I'm not a cop. Cops need evidence to solve cases."
Alice's lips trembled. She didn't dare imagine what would happen if the Brown family went bankrupt.
Flashes of her childhood's tight living conditions at the Lewis family crossed her mind. Alice's tears fell in terror.
She'd long grown accustomed to her current luxurious lifestyle. She absolutely couldn't let herself fall back to that state.
She looked up at Daniel pleadingly, crying anxiously, "Daniel, I was wrong. I'll apologize to Scarlett, sincerely. Please don't do this. My parents raised Scarlett for six years after all. Scarlett definitely doesn't want the Brown family to collapse either. I'll go beg Scarlett. I'll go right now."
Alice started to leave urgently. Daniel's cold eyes swept over.
"She doesn't need your apology! Alice, you broke the rules. You have to face the consequences!"
His gaze was like a blade, pinning Alice's steps in place and making her realize there was no turning back.
Recently, because of the baby in her belly, Alice had been feeling like Daniel cared about her.
It was now that she deeply felt how ruthless Daniel could be.
How could he be so heartless toward her, without a shred of pity!
Daniel didn't go to the office or The Wilson Mansion.
Instead, he had someone take him to Blossom Mansion, where Andrew and Blair lived.
Blossom Mansion was lively even during the day. Several expensive cars were parked in the yard, none belonging to the Wilson family.
Daniel came without notice. As he got out and walked to the corridor, a servant spotted him.
The servant was shocked. "Mr. Daniel Wilson, why are you here? Mrs. Blair Wilson has invited several distinguished ladies over to play cards. I'll go tell Mrs. Blair Wilson."
Daniel was busy. He'd grown up with Magnolia as a child, and his relationship with Andrew and Blair was respectful but not close.
Daniel rarely came here, and even when he did, he usually gave advance notice.
The servant was about to turn and announce Blair when Daniel's eyes turned cold, saying sternly, "No need."
The servant froze at his commanding tone. He'd already stepped past her, striding into the villa.
Then, the conversation of several women playing cards in the small parlor reached his ears.
"Mrs. Wilson, did your son Daniel really get divorced?"
"Of course."
"Congratulations! You've finally gotten rid of that troublesome and headache-inducing Scarlett."
"If that bitch Scarlett hadn't used tricks back then, and Mrs. Magnolia Wilson hadn't pitied her and forced Mr. Daniel Wilson to marry her, with Mr. Daniel Wilson's qualifications, couldn't Mrs. Blair Wilson have chosen a better wife for him?"
