Chapter 16 Stupid

"Mr. Nicholas, the meeting arrangements have been made and we can start now." Emily's mouth was adorned with a perfectly placed smile, and she occasionally glanced over at Caroline, whose reception of her proud gaze was somewhat annoyed.

"The meeting is postponed. You have five minutes to handle the documents." Nicholas took note of all her actions, his tone icy and devoid of warmth.

At first, Emily was still pleased, thinking that Caroline's position in Nicholas's heart was nothing special. But when she realized that Nicholas's icy gaze was directed straight at her, she understood that he was referring to her.

"It's okay, I can learn it." Caroline reached out and gently tugged on Nicholas's sleeve.

"Darling, take your time and don't rush. You can learn this later." Nicholas turned to look at Caroline, appearing to be a completely different person from the one who exuded a cold aura just moments before.

"Mr. Nicholas, the clothes are here." James felt that the atmosphere between the three of them was a bit strange, and Emily silently moved the files back to her own desk.

"Okay, let's go. I'll change my clothes first," said Nicholas as he took the clothes from James's hand and held onto Caroline, heading towards the office.

"I can just go to the employee changing room to change..." Caroline spoke up, but Nicholas seemed to have not heard her and pulled her into the office without hesitation.

The partition in the CEO's office was a rest area. Nicholas usually rested here when he worked until late at night. However, since Caroline appeared, he had never rested here again, and even worked overtime at the company less frequently, dealing with work and video conferences directly at home.

The room was filled with Nicholas's aura, and it was as focused as a mold carved out of a single piece. Caroline hung up her changed clothes on a hanger, surprised at how well the clothes Nicholas chose fit her. Her long hair curled and fell loosely on her shoulders, and she wore a black skirt with stockings adorned with silk.

"Mr. Nicholas, Emily has finished organizing the documents. When will the meeting be?" James broke the silence first, and since Caroline entered the rest area, Nicholas's expression had not been good.

"In ten minutes. She doesn't need to go. Let her teach Caroline some basic work, and also find out what happened just now," Nicholas usually turned a blind eye to some bold employees' thoughts and never bothered to deal with such matters as long as they did not affect the company's interests.

"I understand," James had followed Nicholas for so many years, naturally understanding who he was referring to when he said "she."

After waiting for Caroline to change her clothes, Nicholas was preparing to go to a meeting.

"I will have her teach you some basic things. You don't have to follow everything she says. If she asks you to do something you don't understand, come and ask me. Don't keep it to yourself, got it?" Nicholas gently said as he flicked the stray hair beside Caroline's face behind her ear.

Caroline obediently nodded with her eyes lowered. How could she not guess what Emily was thinking? But what about Nicholas? Did he really not know?

Thinking of this, Caroline unconsciously looked up at Nicholas, her pretty eyebrows slightly furrowed.

"What's wrong, baby? Do you want to know something?" Nicholas saw Caroline's puzzled expression and lightly tapped her forehead with his finger.

"It's, it's nothing. Go to your meeting quickly." Caroline regained her senses and shook her head.

"You remember what I said?" Nicholas asked again, still worried. He only left the office after he noticed that Caroline was getting impatient and kissed her forehead.

At first, Caroline was going to push him away, but when his warm lips landed on her forehead, her raised hand suddenly stopped. She just felt her heart calming down.

Nicholas was satisfied with Caroline's reaction. His mood improved significantly, and the high-level managers in the meeting unexpectedly found him easy to talk to today.

Even when a high-level executive reported the wrong quarterly profit during a meeting, Nicholas just responded with a faint "mm-hmm" and didn't say anything else after reminding him to be more careful next time. The executive was left feeling anxious and scared for half a day.

"At this meeting break, James, what's wrong with Mr. Nicholas today?" someone couldn't help but ask James.

"Mr. Nicholas is fine today, just like usual. Do what you're supposed to do and don't expect him to be in a good mood every time. He's not always so forgiving," James knew everything, but he couldn't say anything. He still reminded them though.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the top-level assistant's office was not as relaxed as the meeting room.

Emily usually attended meetings with Nicholas and James, but she was left behind today because of her poor performance. She exuded unbridled resentment.

As for Caroline, she simply studied the work she needed to do later with a calm expression.

"Smack!"

Emily slammed a blue folder onto Caroline's desk and sneered, "You need someone else to teach you something so simple? I really don't know what Mr. Nicholas sees in you."

"If I were you, I would treat myself better," Caroline chuckled softly. In this situation, any smart person wouldn't blatantly target themselves like Emily did. Caroline really didn't know what Emily was thinking.

After Caroline casually dropped that sentence, she didn't pay any attention to Emily and just rubbed her temples with a sigh.

"Just you? You can't do anything and still want to marry Mr. Nicholas. I know best that Mr. Nicholas hates people like you who have low work efficiency," Emily was unhappy with Caroline ignoring her words and left her desk with folded arms.

Who would have thought that the document Emily brought had a mistake? The part marked with a red pen misled Caroline, resulting in the document being sent back for a redo.

"You're so stupid. It's all written up there so clearly and you still can't do it right. If Mr. Nicholas gets angry, don't blame me for not warning you," Emily sneered and left Caroline's desk.

Caroline frowned. She followed Emily's marks step by step, so why did this happen?

Emily felt pleased when she saw Caroline's worried expression while holding the document. She thought that as long as Caroline kept making mistakes, Nicholas would eventually dislike her and see Emily's own strengths.

As Emily was secretly rejoicing, the door of Nicholas's office opened and he walked out with a furrowed brow.
