Chapter 17 My smart baby
Emily immediately lowered her head and looked at the file in her formal attire, quietly observing Nicholas's movements on the side. She thought that Caroline was going to be scolded, but the next second she saw Nicholas supporting Caroline with one hand, circling her waist, and using the other hand to write and draw on the file behind her.
"Why didn't you come to me when you encountered a problem?" Nicholas asked softly.
"I thought I could solve it myself, but I followed the steps marked on it, why is it still not working?" Caroline no longer concealed her thoughts and told Nicholas her problem truthfully.
Nicholas looked at the words marked by Emily on the side and found that a key link was marked incorrectly, which caused Caroline to process the file incorrectly.
"Here, it's wrong. Who gave this to you?" Nicholas slightly frowned and drew a stroke with a red pen on a dot next to it.
"Emily." Caroline's mystery was finally solved, but she had been constantly frustrated by Emily, who she had only met today and had been targeting her all along.
"Forget it, don't think too much. Wait for me here, and I'll take you to lunch." Nicholas looked at his wristwatch and said.
"I can go to the employee cafeteria myself..." Caroline replied subconsciously. She didn't want others to know about her relationship with Nicholas, so they wouldn't point fingers at her. But Nicholas was such a shining person.
"Then I'll accompany you to the employee cafeteria." Nicholas retorted. Since he found her, he had no intention of letting go.
"I can go by myself..."
"Baby, your meal card is still with me." Nicholas chuckled and rubbed Caroline's head. When Caroline joined the company today, the meal card was given to Nicholas by the personnel department.
Caroline pouted and looked at him angrily, but could only follow Nicholas out helplessly.
Emily looked at the interaction between the two, and the paper in her hand was already wrinkled.
"Go check on Emily and see what she did to Caroline today." Nicholas's eyes turned cold. He couldn't allow Emily to keep targeting Caroline.
"Yes." James responded, silently sighing in his heart. He usually didn't care as long as Emily didn't do anything excessive, but today she had repeatedly provoked Nicholas, so she could only fend for herself.
During the time they had lunch, James had already transferred the video and some information to Nicholas's phone.
"Let her not come tomorrow." Nicholas's voice was as cold as ice. He couldn't allow anyone to bully the person he cherished.
"Mr. Nicholas... Isn't this a bit..." James couldn't help but advise, he didn't expect Nicholas to value Caroline so much. He thought that downgrading Emily and making her work at the grassroots level as a warning would be enough, but he didn't expect Nicholas to directly dismiss Emily.
"Do as I say." Nicholas didn't respond to James anymore. His voice was low and pleasant, but also full of majesty.
"Yes."
"Knock, knock, knock." The office door was knocked open, and Caroline was holding documents outside.
"Madam...," James had just experienced what happened with Emily, and now seeing Caroline, he couldn't help but tremble. He didn't want to be dismissed by his own CEO.
"Shh, speak softly." Caroline looked around and fortunately, there was only Emily alone. She didn't want her carefully hidden identity to be known by everyone.
"The CEO is waiting for you inside. Please go in quickly."
Before Caroline arrived, the atmosphere in Nicholas's office made James very uncomfortable, but all of this dissipated when Nicholas saw Caroline.
"Do you think this is appropriate?" Caroline spread out the documents in her hand and reorganized them, wisely choosing not to ask Emily.
"My smart baby." Nicholas was not stingy with his praise for Caroline, and James was even more uncomfortable listening to him. He had never heard Nicholas use this tone with anyone before.
"You be serious." Caroline complained softly.
"Go make a cup of coffee, and a cup of warm milk." Nicholas immediately looked at James and James obediently left the office to prepare the drinks for the two of them.
Nicholas got up from his seat, held Caroline's shoulder, and let her sit in the position where he usually worked. He patiently explained the next step of their work while standing by her side.
"You have been dismissed," James straightforwardly told Emily.
"What? Me? James, are you sure it's me and not Caroline?" Emily was surprised and pointed at herself, quickly standing up from her chair.
"That's right, it's you. Don't you know what you've done wrong? Didn't I warn you that you can't mess with Caroline? Do you really think the CEO can't see through your little tricks under him?" James chuckled lightly. She still hadn't repented.
"What did I do wrong? Did I make a mistake at work? It's Caroline who messed up and made everyone clean up the mess! Why do you have the right to dismiss me? I want to see Mr. Nicholas! You must be lying to me!" Emily couldn't accept this fact, and she had always behaved very maturely in front of Nicholas.
"Mr. Nicholas is not available to see you now. You should pack up your things and leave. The notice from the HR department will be coming down soon."
After finishing speaking, James ignored Emily completely, believing that her struggle was entirely meaningless. While James went to make coffee and heat milk, Emily went to knock on Nicholas's office door. She was unwilling to give up her efforts for so many years because of Caroline.
For many years, Emily had thought that as long as she remained calm and collected, Nicholas would eventually fall in love with her. But now that she had left the Johnson family, she would never see him again. Her dreams of many years were shattered.
She did not believe that Nicholas would be so heartless as to blame everything on Caroline. Nicholas was speaking with Caroline about some work-related matters when he heard someone knocking on the door. Assuming it was James with the coffee and milk, he said, "Come in."
Without looking up, Nicholas's gaze remained fixed on Caroline, and he couldn't help but smile as he watched her thinking seriously. As soon as Emily entered, she saw Caroline sitting in the CEO's leather chair, and her CEO leaning over, his face full of gentle smiles.
Emily had never seen Nicholas like this before. She had never even seen him smile at her. She thought he treated everyone the same, even James, who was always by his side, had a cold expression. But today, Nicholas came smiling while holding Caroline's hand.
