Chapter 44

Chapter 44
HUMAN WOLF

Thompson and Jimmy remained flat on the floor watching the leftover scraps of their car fly above their heads. The ground where they lay had knee-deep shrubs all around so they were perfectly covered from any intruder. An ideal place to stay hidden.
Thompson shuffled trying to get off the ground but Jimmy held him back.
"What are you doing Jimmy?" Thompson asked, his eyes wide. There was both panic, anger, and confusion in them. He could not understand what had happened. Why would anyone place a bomb in their var? Much more scary than that was the fact that they were in it just a couple of minutes ago! What if they had passed a speed bump and the bomb had been detonated on its own.
"Stay down and keep it low!" Jimmy whispered harshly.
Thompson frowned staring at him with wide eyes as if what he was saying made no sense. They just tried to kill them and he was asking him to keep it low. That couldn't be possible but he decided to also reduce his voice.
"Someone just tried to kill us and you are asking me to be calm? I could have died!" Thompson snapped in low tones.
Jimmy kissed his teeth in frustration and tapped Thompson's hand. Thompson stared at him with a raised brow and then Jimmy brought out two of his fingers pointed at his own eyes and then towards the car like the military sign for direction.
Thompson understood and turned his eyes to their car wreck. Right in front of it, three large wolves circled the car, sniffing and searching. They howled aloud, moving in unison like trained hunting dogs.
Thompson stared back at Jimmy in shock and returned his eyes to it again. He was even more shocked when one of the wolves, stood upright and stretched its limbs. Cracking sounds filled the air and Thompson wondered what was happening. The whole scene looked like he was in a movie. Things like this are not supposed to be real yet they were happening right before their eyes.
Jimmy on the other hand was more reserved. He was stunned too but he was calmer in his reaction. He lowered himself even further unto the ground and the scrubs around covered him even more. Thompson did the same and they both watched on in horror as the wolf who stood, started transforming.
Its outstretched limbs turned into arms and its torso became that of a man with a firm chest and muscles around the abdomen region. The limbs that held him upright soon turned to human legs and before they could blink again, the wolf had become a man!
The fact that he was naked didn't even come across to them as a strange thing, seeing a wolf transform into a human was the most shocking thing they had both experienced in their career.
Thompson turned to Jimmy with alarm and terror in his eyes but the older officer held him in place. They were better off unseen than seen. These wolves were not ordinary wolves. They were humans but wolves. It was difficult explaining what they saw before their eyes.
Could they be a product of a science experiment? -Jimmy wondered as he stared at what was happening in front of him.
The human-wolf moved closer to the scraps of the vehicle and circles it just like the other wolves were doing. Then he moved away from the car and started walking towards the clearing where Jimmy and Thompson had stood.
Thompson felt like peeing in his pants. If anything the movies said was true, then this human-wolf was surely going to tear him into bits. His gun might not even stand a chance.
As the man moved closer, Thompson shrunk further into the ground, wishing it would open and swallow him whole. That was the only way to protect him from the creature approaching. He and Jimmy, held their breaths as the man got closer and stopped moving. He sniffed the air like a dog, he moved his intense eyes around, searching for any signs. When he didn't see anything, he turned back around to the others.
"They are dead, nothing but burnt scraps around here. Let's report back to Councilman Carter!"
Thompson's eyes almost fell out of their sockets as his ears could not believe what they heard. Yet, he didn't have enough time to express his shock as the human-wolf, stretched himself again, and just like the first time, ugly sharp claws replaced his fingers and his arms turned into limbs, paws replaced his feet and soon he was transformed into a wolf.
The one who became human began to saunter away from the car wreck and the other followed soon they all started running and disappeared from the road, taking the direction of New Orleans where Thompson and Jimmy were coming from.
It was a long time before either of them could regain from the terror they had just witnessed. Jimmy was the first to rise from the floor. He suddenly felt cold as he sat up straight, sitting on the bare ground, lost in his thoughts. That human-wolf had said it, they were to report to Carter. It meant Carter was the one who tried to have them killed. But why?
Thompson's heart was ramming so hard in his chest as he watched Jimmy sit up, he feared the wolves would return and jump on his partner -even if technically the chances of that happening were very slim, the wolves had left more than an hour ago with their speed they were already in the city by now. Still, Thompson wanted to be certain, maybe they were lurking behind to see if he and Jimmy had survived.
When he saw that nothing happened to Jimmy, he also slowly got up from the ground and sat up kike Jimmy.
"Councilman Carter..." He breathed out, remembering what the human-wolf had said.
"That's Captain Carter, isn't it?" He asked Jimmy.
"You saw him in that restaurant and you heard him, It couldn't have been someone else," Jimmy responded.
He was tired. He was scared. He couldn't believe Carter would do that to them. When Thompson told him about the offer Carter gave to him, Jimmy had thought the young detective was just being funny. He thought Thompson made it all up because he couldn't ever picture his Captain doing a cheap thing like that. But this just proved otherwise. Carter wanted them dead. But why? Jimmy kept asking himself without arriving at an answer.
"Fuck! Why would he want to do this?" Thompson snapped but in a low voice.
"I don't know, Thompson. I am sitting here trying to think of a possible reason but I can't find any of it. All we did was follow a lead. He asked us to leave and we were going to leave, but then he asked you to report my behavior to him and now, he sends some bunch of lab rats to kill us!" Jimmy spat.
