Chapter 45

It was still too difficult for him to believe. Mike, his old partner had been right all along. Mike had never truly trusted Carter.

Thompson could feel the frustration and anger coming from Jimmy and he stayed quiet. They were both angry. He almost got killed by an officer because of a case. Not even by the officer himself but by some lab rats, as Jimmy, as put it. Everything seemed wrong. Something was wrong.

"Do you know about those wolves?" Thompson asked him after a while of silence.

"The lab rats?" Jimmy asked him and he nodded his head. "I don't. I have never seen them before in my life. I have never even known such experiments existed. I thought they only did it in movies you, know..."

"Yeah, I thought the same too. When the guy was transforming I thought I would fart out of fear and he would hear us," Thompson said and Jimmy smiled.

"Fear can make you do the most unexpected thing." Jimmy chuckled.

They both fell silent again as they watched the wreck of their car. The question that remained unspoken was what they were going to do. Should they return home? Should they continue investigating the case or let it go?

Jimmy had a feeling, Carter would follow up with their families. But what happens when he returns home and his family had already started morning him? What if they don't get to do his burial as planned and Carter found out?

He would surely return for them. That's how evil-minded criminals worked. He wasn't safe anywhere. The only solution for him would be to find Mike and maybe together they could fight Carter.

Thompson on the other hand also thought about his next move. If he returns home he would be fine. He had no family. No one to morn him. Only the small police station in the small town he served would morn him. Carter was never going to even notice if he returned or not. Unless he had his wolfmen posted around which was not certain. It was saver to return home than stay.

"What are we going to do now?" Jimmy asked Thompson.

Thompson got up from the ground, wiping his uniform on the rump side and his arms where he had rested on the ground. When it was fairly clean, he stared at Jimmy.

"I am going home. This mission is too dangerous Jimmy, I am too young to die." Thompson said.

"But Carter could send his men after you, it's not safe!" Jimmy tried to make him understand. Carter would go to any length to have them killed to keep whatever secret he was trying to keep.

"I will lay low, and stay alive. You should do the same," Thompson said and started walking away from Jimmy, following the path of the shrub.

Jimmy hissed and started following him. Thompson glanced back and noticed he was following him, he stopped. "Why are you following me? You should go home, Jimmy. It's over! This mission is over! You have a daughter! Don't get yourself killed over this crap!" Thompson barked, getting pissed off.

The guy had a whole life ahead of him and he wanted to waste it for a dumb mission with fucked up lab rats and bombs. "Fuck it, Jimmy! Go home!" He repeated when Jimmy wasn't turning around.

"Listen to me, your town is closer to mine, I am following you for two things, first I want to get a ride, and then I want to convince you to come with me," Jimmy said with a smile.

Thompson raised his brief and scoffed. "Are you crazy? You think I want to die?"

"I don't want you to do. Ghats why I am asking you to do this. We need to find out what Carter is hiding. Why does he want to eliminate us? That's the only way to stop him when we get a step ahead of him." Jimmy explained.

Thompson starred at his disheveled hair and shook his head. "You've gone mad Jimmy! You have to stop! I am not doing this!"

Seeing the fear in Thompson's eyes, Jimmy decided to let go. "Okay, I will let you go. But I do still need a car to be able to find Mike and a phone."

Thompson shook his head and started walking again. This time he didn't complain when Jimmy trailed behind him. He would have loved to continue with the mission and find out what Carter was hiding but he also didn't want to die. Jimmy had a daughter who could continue his legacy after him, he had none. He wasn't even married. The moment he died, the whole world won't even notice that someone passed, aside from his colleagues at the station. Despite the urge to continue with the mission, Thompson let his fear take over him.

They walked in silence for long hours. By the time they got to the first house in sight, it was dark and they were both dehydrated from walking for too long.
