Chapter 58: The Hidden

The Dive's faint light flickered, Tom's cigarette smoke curling in the air, his confession—"You were made for him" (Chapter 57)—a weight crushing Sam's chest, the connection pulsing weakly—Jake, a lie, a heat he couldn't shake. The crest on the letter (Chapter 54 glared on the table, a sign of the curse his father feared (Chapter 54), a leash Jake had made (Chapter 57), and Tom's sharp, weary eyes met Sam's, his question—"And you knew?" (Chapter 57)—unspoken, a silent grant thickening the silence.

Seattle's smoldering ruin loomed above the boarded windows, the power vacuum (Chapter 51) a void Sam no longer wanted to walk through—he desired escape, escape from Jake, escape from the bond, escape from the lie his life had become.

Tom relaxed, exhaling smoke, his smile wiped away, a hard, firm glare in its place. "You're mad—I know," he rasped, low and rough, grinding the cigarette into the ashtray with a slow scratch. "Jake did you dirty—did us all. But there's something else you need to hear before you do something stupid." He paused, eyes pinching, a flicker of something—caution, regret—moving across his scarred face. "If you break that connection, you might not get out alive."

Sam’s breath hitched, the bond flaring—Jake, distant, alive—a heat he hated, a chain he’d chosen (Chapter 50) now twisted by Tom’s words. “What the hell does that mean?” he growled, claws glinting, stepping closer, the letter trembling in his fist. “Lucian said kill Jake—that’s the way out (Chapter 55). You’re saying it’ll kill me too?” His voice cracked, fury and fear warring, the curse—Clara’s blood (Chapter 37), his father’s warning (Chapter 54)—tightening its grip. Tom nodded, lighting another cigarette, the match’s flare illuminating the scars from his betrayal (Chapter 41). “That’s what I’m saying,” he rasped, smoke curling from his lips. “The bond’s not just Jake’s leash—it’s in you, deep, tied to that cursed blood. Daniel realized—attempted to warn Clara, but Jake… he trapped it in, made it such that breaking it would tear you in two, too." He leaned in close, eyes unflickering, remorseless. "I knew, yeah—saw Jake assemble it, thought it'd hold us together.

Hadn't seen the cost until it was too late."

Sam's chest tightened, the bond pulsating—Jake, a humming, a lie he'd lived—a truth that made Lucian's proposal (Chapter 55) a double-edged sword. Kill Jake, be free, lose himself? His father's letter flashed—"not meant to be free" (Chapter 54)—and Tom's confession—"made for him" (Chapter 57)—cut deeper, a cage he couldn't break. Ethan's ritual echoed—Jake's death as the price (Chapter 50)—but this was worse, a trap where freedom was destruction, not loss.

He no longer cared. "I want my life back," Sam said, voice rough, resolute, claws creeping back into hiding as determination strengthened, the comfort of the bond a burden he'd lost, cost aside. “I don’t give a damn if it kills me—better that than living as Jake’s… thing.” He stepped back, the letter crumpling in his hand, Lucian’s golden eyes flashing—“you’ll have to kill Jake” (Chapter 55)—a path he’d take, consequences be damned.

Tom’s warning rang—“might not survive”—but Sam’s wolf snarled, restless, done with chains, done with lies, done with Jake’s silence (Chapter 54).

Tom's eyes followed him, smoke rolling, head shake, the slightest. "Your funeral, kid," he grumbled, tone low, half-sad. "Just don't say I didn't warn you." Ash spilled across the table, eyes flashing—guilt, maybe, or acceptance—as Sam moved towards the door, the bond tautening thin, Jake standing there as a shadow he'd erase, one way or another.

But before he could decide—before he could choose Lucian’s ritual, face Jake, or even breathe—the choice was ripped away.

A crash shattered the night, glass shattering inward as darkness flooded in over the Dive—black leather, steel glinting, the Reapers' close menace (Chapter 53) flooding through the walls. Sam spun, claws out, heart pounding, but they weren't for him—Tom dove, rolling behind the counter, gun clutched, too late. The Reapers moved fast, quiet, knives glinting—a scream was silenced, blood spurting, Tom's cigarette falling as a knife cut through his throat, his body crashing, eyes wide, dead.

Sam bellowed, lunge, claws raking a Reaper's arm, blood bubbled, but they didn't attack—fell back, vanished in the smoke as suddenly as they came, Tom dead, the Dive a grave. The bond roared—Jake, sudden, raw—a shiver of terror Sam hadn't known since the war (Chapter 46). His breath locked, the letter falling from his hand, crest glaring in the dim light, and a boom echoed from afar—blasts, gunfire, the penthouse's location.

The Reapers were on Jake's base.

Sam ran, instincts screaming, his wolf bursting forth, claws scraping into pavement as he tore through the fire-lit streets. Smoke scorched his lungs, the city's ruins closing in, the bond pulling him on—Jake, alive, fighting. The penthouse loomed, gunfire snapping from the roof, shadows flashing, the Reapers swarming. Sam's breathing was harsh, his muscles burning, but he didn't hesitate, didn't think. Jake was inside.

He stormed in through the front door, the stench of blood thick on the air, bodies littering the lobby—Cobra men, torn apart, the Reapers cutting through them like a hot knife through butter. The elevator was blazing, flames licking the walls, driving Sam up the stairs, three steps at a time, the tie a wild heartbeat—more powerful now, driving.

Fourth floor. Gunfire. Screamings. He burst through the wreckage, his eyes afire, his claws out, until he saw him.

Jake stood there, golden eyes burning, blood on his cheek, torn shirt, knife embedded in his side—but standing, fighting. Quick strides, lethal strides, predator in his territory, but Sam saw it—saw the fatigue, the weight, the way he lurched after each kill. The Reapers closed in, shadows converging.

And then Jake saw him.

They locked eyes, a frozen instant amidst the destruction, and Sam recognized it—pure, untainted, the connection crashing into him like a storm surge. Jake's lips parted, something flashing in his gaze—relief?Shock? But before he could speak, a Reaper bore down.

Sam bolted before he was able to think, claws tearing through the assailant, flipping to Jake's side, backs against each other, slippery blood beneath them. "You should have run," Jake rasped, shaking, voice rough. "I would have found you.".

Sam swallowed hard, the heat of the bond almost overwhelming him, his instincts shrieking, but he did not step back. "Guess I didn't want to be found," he growled, and even as the words came, he knew that they were lies.

Not anymore.

Jake's sharp, knowing breath came, and in that moment, with the city in flames, with blood on their hands, with death approaching—Sam knew. He wasn't leaving.

Not without Jake.
