Chapter 59: The War Begins

The Dive was thick with blood and ash as Tom's body fell behind the bar, throat slit, cigarette smoldering on the floor—the Reapers' swift, silent strike (Chapter 58) prelude to the chaos pouring onto the streets. Sam froze, claws out, the bond raging—Jake, alert, desperate—a jolt that yanked him out of the numbness of Tom's forewarning—"you might not survive it" (Chapter 58). The crest of the letter (Chapter 54) was rumpled beside Tom, quiet proof of truth—Jake's falsehood, the construct of the bond (Chapter 57)—but a distant boom of explosion jolted Sam from his train of thought, rackets resounding from the penthouse, Reapers' incursion into Jake's base an electric clap shattering night.

The city erupted into ugliness.

Sam ran, boots pounding ashy streets, the city war-torn new life—Seattle's burning ashes (Chapter 51) aflame as Jake's soldiers and Reapers engaged in battle. Firestorm engulfed burning cars, their gutted shells lightning the deadliness—Reapers in black leather, practiced and effective (Chapter 53), slicing down Viper victims with knives and claws, bullets bursting in repeated rounds. Paul and some last remaining survivors fought back, claws glinting, blood gouting, but outnumbered, outgunned, the power vacuum (Chapter 51) an open field the Reapers overran with vicious efficiency.

The connection pulsed—Jake, close, alive—a heat that guided Sam through the fight, by a Viper gutted on the sidewalk, a Reaper's throat slit by Paul's killing blow. The penthouse loomed before, its glass wall busted, smoke billowing out of the lower floors, gunfire flashing like lightning within. Sam's wolf snarled, restless, Lucian's suggestion—"kill Jake" (Chapter 55)—and Tom's revelation—"made for him" (Chapter 57)—rivals the bond's pull, a chain he couldn't sever, not yet. He bulldozed through the lobby's ruin—glass breaking, bodies strewn about—claws out, drawn to Jake, to questions, to the war he could not escape.

The penthouse was a butcher shop—furniture shattered, walls riddled with bullet wounds, Viper blood black pooling. Sam slammed in, chest heaving, and froze. Lucian and Jake fought in the center, a fight of golden-eyed animals, claws swiping, growls shaking the air—an animal rage Sam had never seen. Lucian fluid, deadly, his black fur ripped, golden eyes blazing with a cold, ancient rage (Chapter 53). Jake roared, claws tearing, shirt frayed from past wounds (Chapter 48), golden eyes wild, frightened—a cornered predator, not giving commands.

Sam was frozen, the connection flashing—Jake's pain, his fear—a living throb he had not felt since the factory (Chapter 39). Lucian parried a blow, slamming Jake into the bar, glass shattering, whiskey bottles shattering in showers of amber. Jake snarled, snapping back, claws tearing through Lucian's arm, dark blood weling, but Lucian laughed—rasping, wolf-like—and spun, knees coming up and crashing into Jake's belly, slamming him across a table. Wood cracked and splintered, and Sam's claws danced, the tie flowing—Jake, open, a weak place in the alpha's hide he'd never heard of, never seen, not in the alley (Chapter 34), never faced by Nick (Chapter 48).

They fought like animals, no guns, no speech—just claws, teeth, a fierce dance of blood and rage. Lucian's quickness overpowered Jake's strength, golden eyes gleaming as he sidestepped a swipe, raking claws across Jake's thigh, blood jetting. Jake lunched, growling, wildly swinging, but Lucian evaded, smooth, immovable, a predator honed by years Jake couldn't match. The bond pulsed—Jake's exhaustion, a tattered perimeter—and Sam's chest tightened, Tom's vigilance—"may not make it" (Chapter 58)—and Lucian's ritual—"kill Jake" (Chapter 55)—blending with this, Jake's vulnerability a mirror of the deception he'd lived (Chapter 57).

Lucian roared, golden eyes locked on Jake's, and launched himself—claws tearing a savage arc across Jake's chest, flesh ripped, blood spurting dark against the penthouse floor. Jake stumbled, a strangled growl torn from his lips, hands pressed over the wound, golden eyes wide, shocked—and he didn't heal. The wound stayed open, blood pooling, no shift, no recovery like the war wounds (Chapter 46), an exposure Sam couldn't help but notice, the bond flashing—Jake's pain, cutting, real—a rope fraying under Lucian's strike.

Jake gasped, stepping back, eyes darting to Sam—pleading, desperate. The vision burned itself into Sam's chest, a hurt that cut deeper than he'd ever known. This was the man who'd taken him prisoner, manipulated him, lied to him. And yet, there, bloody, vulnerable, Jake wasn't the monster in Sam's mind. He was simply a man—one who'd fought for control, battled for survival, and now, might not make it.

Lucian didn't wait. He stepped forward, each step measured, deliberate, savoring Jake's weakness. "You're done," he breathed, voice firm, lethal. "Seattle was never yours."

Jake bared his teeth, still stubborn even here, even as his knees attempted to buckle. "Then take it," he snarled. "See what's left."

Lucian growled. "You're still trying to act like you're in control." His claws realigned. "Let's fix that.".

Sam's heart pounded. The bond screamed, demanding action. Run. Fight. Choose. He could let Lucian finish it—walk away, be free. But the word was hollow, empty. Free? What was freedom when the bond still burned in his chest, when Jake's golden eyes still held him in thrall?

Lucian struck—claws flashing at Jake's throat.

Sam reacted.

He didn't think, didn't plan—his body traveled in advance of his mind. His claws wrapped around Lucian's wrist as it swung, twisting, shoving him back with power to make him stumble. Lucian's golden eyes widened, surprise for a moment before fury blazed within them. "Sam," he growled, voice like cold steel.

Jake coughed, still standing, barely. "Took you long enough.".

Sam's breath was rough. The link was a spark wire, burning him, unstoppable. He stood before Lucian, resolve settling into his bones. "He's my issue to deal with."

Lucian's gaze darkened and became calculating. "You don't have to do this."

"I do," said Sam, and it was the truth.

Lucian exhaled a harsh breath, then nodded once, as if relinquishing something inevitable. "Fine." He turned and left, his part in this played out, his work completed. "But you remember, Sam. You made your choice."

There was no sound.

Jake emitted a low, agonized laugh. "So, what now?"

Sam didn't answer. He only looked at him, at the blood, the devastation, the man who had shaped his existence in ways he still couldn't understand.

And for the first time, he had no clue what was coming next.
