Chapter 57: The Hidden Truth
The Dive's dark light flickered, Tom's cigarette smoke curling through the air, his confession—"You were made for him" (Chapter 57)—a weight on Sam's chest, the connection humming faintly—Jake, a lie, a burning he couldn't shake. The letter's crest (Chapter 54) stared from the table, a mark of the curse his father dreaded (Chapter 54), a leash Jake had made (Chapter 57), and Tom's eyes—sharpened, weary—grazed Sam's, his question—"And you knew?" (Chapter 57)—unspoken, a silent admission thickening the silence.
Seattle's smoldering wreckage loomed beyond the boarded-up windows, the power vacuum (Chapter 51) a void Sam no longer wanted to navigate—he yearned escape, escape from Jake, escape from the bond, escape from the lie his life had become.
Tom sat back, blowing out smoke, his smirk dissipating, replaced by a hard, unblinking gaze. "You're mad—I get it," he growled, low, raspy voice, stubbing the cigarette with a slow crunch. "Jake manipulated you—us all. But there's one thing more you need to hear before you do something stupid." He paused, eyes narrowing, a flash of something—caution, remorse—passing across his scarred face. "If you shatter that bond, you might not survive it."
Sam’s breath hitched, the bond flaring—Jake, distant, alive—a heat he hated, a chain he’d chosen (Chapter 50) now twisted by Tom’s words. “What the hell does that mean?” he growled, claws glinting, stepping closer, the letter trembling in his fist. “Lucian said kill Jake—that’s the way out (Chapter 55). You’re saying it’ll kill me too?” His voice cracked, fury and fear warring, the curse—Clara’s blood (Chapter 37), his father’s warning (Chapter 54)—tightening its grip. Tom nodded, lighting another cigarette, the match’s flare illuminating the scars from his betrayal (Chapter 41). “That’s what I’m saying,” he rasped, smoke curling from his lips. “The bond’s not just Jake’s leash—it’s in you, deep, tied to that cursed blood. Daniel saw it—attempted to inform Clara, but Jake… he locked it away, made it so that it would shatter and rip you asunder too." He leaned forward, eyes unflinching, unmournful. "I knew, yeah—saw Jake build it, figured it'd keep us together.
Didn't know the cost 'til then."
Sam's heart tightened, the bond thumping—Jake, a hum of whir, a lie he'd lived—a truth that rendered Lucian's offer (Chapter 55) a two-sided sword. Kill Jake, gain freedom, forfeit self? His father's letter came flooding back—"'not meant to be free'" (Chapter 54)—and Tom's statement—"'made for him'" (Chapter 57)—was starting to knife deeper, a cage from which he could not escape. Ethan's ceremony echoed in his head—Jake's death the sacrifice (Chapter 50)—but this was an even worse snare where liberty was extinction, not loss.
He didn't care anymore. "I want my life back," Sam growled, voice raw, firm, claws tucked back as resolve solidified, the heat of the bond a burden he'd discarded, cost be damned. “I don’t give a damn if it kills me—better that than living as Jake’s… thing.” He stepped back, the letter crumpling in his hand, Lucian’s golden eyes flashing—“you’ll have to kill Jake” (Chapter 55)—a path he’d take, consequences be damned.
Tom’s warning rang—“might not survive”—but Sam’s wolf snarled, restless, done with chains, done with lies, done with Jake’s silence (Chapter 54).
Tom's gaze lingered behind him, smoke twisting, a jerk of his head. "Your funeral, kid," he snarled, low and regretful. "Don't say I didn't warn you." He spat ash on the table, eyes flashing with—guilt, maybe, or surrender—as Sam moved towards the door, the tension wire-tight, Jake's presence a shadow to be erased, somehow.
But before he could decide—before he could choose Lucian’s ritual, face Jake, or even breathe—the choice was ripped away.
An accident ripped the darkness asunder, glass shattering inward as shadows burst in upon the Dive—black coats, steel glinting, the Reapers' precision peril (Chapter 53) bursting through doors. Sam whirled about, claws out, pounding heart, but they were not for him—Tom sprang, rolling to cover behind the bar, pistol in hand, too late. The Reapers charged, fast and silent, blades flashing—a cry was smothered, blood spurting, Tom's cigarette falling as a blade flashed home in his neck, his body falling, eyes locked, dead.
Sam roared, charging, claws tearing a Reaper's arm, blood foaming, but they did not fight—ran, vanished into the smoke as suddenly as they came, leaving Tom dead, the Dive a tomb. The bond snapped—Jake, sudden, cutting—a jolt of terror Sam had not felt since the war (Chapter 46). His breath caught, the letter falling to the ground, crest glinting in the faint light, and a distant boom echoed—explosions, shots, the location of the penthouse.
The Reapers were besieging Jake's base.
Sam's heart pounded, the smell of blood thick around him, Tom's corpse still at his feet. The weight of the moment pressed down—Tom, dead, the connection breaking, the city falling in a war Sam had tried to escape but was unable to. The fight had come for him whether he wanted it or not. His claws convulsed, his instincts screaming to go. The Reapers were vicious, but this raid was not just an attack—this was a statement. A provocation. Jake was the king of this city's underworld, and taking his fortress was stealing all that he had built. Sam needed to get out. This wasn't his fight anymore. Tom was gone. The connection was a lie.
But under the cacophony of the blasts far away, there was something else flowing deep in him—a pull more powerful than pride, deeper than rage.
Jake was at risk.
And despite it all—despite the deceptions, the half-truths, the war—Sam sensed it like a second pulse, an unreflective, irrevocable need to reach him. To fight. To protect.
Damn it.
He gritted his teeth, moving around Tom's body, shoving the pain deep down where he couldn't sense it. He had one chance to break this cycle—to finish this war, to kill Jake, to kill the connection, somehow. He had promised himself he would be free. Freedom wasn't free, though: no matter how much he hated Jake, no matter how much he wanted out, he wasn't ready to let him die.
Not yet.
growling, Sam turned and shot out of the Dive, the skyscape of firelit city in front of him, the fight calling to him, the tie humming hotter step by step.It was going one way or the other tonight.
