Chapter 43: The Mafia Starts to Unravel
The warehouse was a tomb of quiet after Anna's tumble, her bruised form outstretched on the concrete, blood seeping from her splintered wrist. Sam's breathing panted, his trembling hands, the surge of power—raw, ancient, something beyond anything he'd ever felt—still pulsating through his blood. Jake's golden eyes bored into him, wide with fear, stark contrast to the pride he had shown before in the alley (Chapter 34). The bond shuddered, tenuous but real, a thread that linked them even now, through the storm of Tom's betrayal and Cobra's looming peril.
Rufus stepped ahead, hunching beside Anna, his gravelly voice breaking the stillness. "She's out—alive, but she ain't movin' anytime soon." He turned toward Sam, then toward Jake, worry etched on his weathered face. "What the blazes was that, kid?"
Sam remained silent, his gaze locked on his bloodied hands, the power's vibration a weight he could not shed. Lisa whimpered from the cot, pulling his focus—she was safe, alive, but the cost of this night pressed down, heavy and suffocating. Tom stood by the door, gun lax in his hand, his smirk gone, replaced by a wary stillness as he watched Sam. “You’re full of surprises,” he said, voice low, then turned to Jake. “But it’s too late—Cobras’ve got the map. Your empire’s done.”
Jake's growl hummed, claws flexing, but as he lunged to attack, a distant blast shook the earth, a deadened boom rolling through the city. The windows of the warehouse rattled and Sam's stomach dropped—the cry of Jake's world ending. "What happened?" he yelled, stepping in the direction of Tom, tingling claws on his heels.
Tom's eyes flashed, cold and even. "First blow—your eastside headquarters. Nick is in a hurry—every point of vulnerability I gave 'em, they're taking it out on. You're losing it all, Jake—land, men, influence."
Jake yelled, punching a crate, splintering it, blood oozing on his knuckles. "You son of a—f you even lay a hand on him!" He lunged, but Sam caught him by the arm, holding him back, the tie firing—Jake's rage running through him, a storm he could not control.
"Stop!" Sam cried out, voice strained, his fist around Jake's arm. "He's not worth it—not now. We have to figure this out." His eyes flashed to Lisa, then back to Jake, the seriousness of Tom's words sinking in—the Cobras claiming the city, Jake's hold beginning to slip.
Jake broke loose, chest heaving, golden eyes wild but locked on Sam. "Gather what?" He's right—it's lost. Safe houses, routes—Tom gave them all of that." His voice cracked, gruff, bare, a break in the alpha Sam had known all along. The bond pulsed, feeble but intense, a wire stretched to breaking point.
Another explosion boomed, closer this time, the city skyline glinting with distant fire. Rufus cursed, pulling Anna's unconscious body to a corner, while Lisa huddled against the cot, her voice trembling. "Sam—what is it?"
"Cobras," Sam answered, voice flat, going to the window. Shadows outside—people fleeing through the lot, screams echoing, the bitter scent of smoke drifting in. Nick's black-eyed werewolves (Chapter 40), the map's data (Chapter 41)—it was real, happening in the here and now, Jake's empire disintegrating bit by bit. He looked at Jake, there, bloody and still, the alpha who'd bound him, saved him, betrayed him. The bond pulsed, a gentle plea, and Sam was at a decision—save Jake, or let him die?
Tom stepped back, gun raised again, his voice cutting through. "You're out of moves, Jake. Nick owns the city—Cobras'll own it by dawn. And you—" He gestured towards Sam, his lips curling into a snarl. "They're coming for you next. That power? They'll take it out of you."
Sam's claws flexed, his wolf rising, memory of Anna's throat in his hand (Chapter 42) flashing—power he did not understand, power Nick replicated (Chapter 40). "Why help them?" he demanded, voice rough, moving toward Tom. "You were family—brother to Jake. Why?"
Tom's eyes wavered, a hint of something—perhaps regret—before setting in hard. "Family don't matter when you're drowning. Jake's obsession with you—his little pact scheme—swamped us. Cobras extended an olive branch—power, not tidbits. I took it." He shrugged, making his way towards the door. "You're in the middle now, Sam—good luck."
The door slammed shut behind him, Tom disappeared into the darkness, and the warehouse trembled when another blast shook the city—a little nearer, a little louder, a requiem for Jake's reign. Sam gazed up at Jake, the tie fragile between them, his thoughts a battle-scarred terrain. Save him—fight for the man who raised him, enslaved him, saved him from the factory (Chapter 39)? Or let him fall—abandon the lies, the blood, the prison Jake built (Chapter 37)?
Jake sank against the wall, blood dripping from his side, his golden eyes dimming as he stared at the floor. “It’s over,” he muttered, voice hollow, a confession Sam had never heard. “Tom’s right—I’ve got nothing left. They’ll take it all—Vipers, city, you.” He looked up, meeting Sam’s gaze, the bond pulsing with a raw, aching need. “I can’t stop ‘em.”
Sam's chest tightened, Jake's vulnerability a crack in the alpha's armor, a mirror of his own turmoil. He'd hated Jake—hated the small (Chapter 37), the control, the gloating over his kills (Chapter 34)—but this broken man stirred something else. The bond flared, tenuous but there, a connection he couldn't sever, even now. He remembered Ethan's promise (Chapter 38)—freedom, a choice—but Jake's kingdom falling was something more than territory. It meant losing Lisa all over again, losing the Vipers who had adopted him, losing… Jake.
The realization hit, cruel and cruel as if Jake lost everything, he could lose Sam too. Not just to the Cobras, to Nick's chase, but to the connection itself—the cord of fatigue that bound them, the flame, the anger, the history. If Jake went down, what was left of Sam—the omega, the killer, the force he could not define?
