Chapter 42: Anna’s Assassination Attempt
The warehouse air was thick with tension, Tom’s betrayal a fresh wound bleeding into the silence. Sam stood frozen, Lisa trembling behind him, the map of Jake’s empire—now in Cobra hands—clutched in Jake’s claws. Tom’s gun glinted, steady on Jake, his cold smirk a dagger twisting deeper. “You’re done, brother,” Tom said, voice low, final. “Nick’s already moving—your reign’s over.”
Jake’s growl rumbled, golden eyes blazing, the bond pulsing with a fury Sam couldn’t block—rage, hurt, a storm threatening to break. “You’re a dead man,” Jake snarled, stepping forward, claws flexing, but the warehouse door creaked again, a shadow slipping through before he could lunge.
Anna emerged, her slim dagger twirling in her hand, her sharp eyes locking onto Sam with a predator’s focus. Her presence cut through the standoff, a new threat slicing the air. “Enough family drama,” she said, voice smooth, deadly, stepping past Tom without a glance. “You’re all missing the real problem.” Her gaze settled on Sam, a sneer curling her lip. “Him.”
Sam's claws lengthened, heart racing, the bond connecting to Jake's taut tension. "What in the world do you want, Anna?" he snarled, shoving Lisa behind him further, her soft gasp against his back. Tom's betrayal hurt, Nick's black eyes tormented, and now this—anothertime another knife coming for him.
Anna tilted her head, twirling the knife, her movements fluid, deliberate. “You’re the key, Sam—Jake’s little weakness. He’s falling apart because of you—Mary saw it, Tom exploited it, and I’m ending it.” She glanced at Jake, her sneer sharpening. “You’re too soft for him, Jacob. I’m taking the Vipers—starting with his head.”
Jake bellowed, leaping, but Anna was faster, avoiding his claws and spinning to Sam, her blade flashing. Sam reacted, shoving Lisa aside and leaping, the blade glancing off his arm, blood rising fast and hot. He rolled, claws ripping, but Anna skipped away, her laughter cutting and icy. "Slow, little omega," she taunted, circling him. "You're not worth the trouble you cause."
Tom took a step back, gun down, watching with clinical contempt as Anna attacked again, her knife flashing at Sam's throat. Jake knocked her off in mid-lunge, dumping her into a crate, wood splintering, but she escaped, flinging him across the room, her knife scratching his ribs. Blood dropped, and the bond exploded forth—Jake's pain bleeding over into Sam, a shock that galvanized his wolf.
“Stay out of this!” Anna hissed at Jake, spinning back to Sam, her eyes glinting with intent. “He dies, and you’re free—Vipers mine.” She lunged, faster, the dagger a blur, and Sam ducked, claws raking her arm, drawing blood. She snarled, undeterred, and drove her knee into his gut, knocking the wind from him. He stumbled, gasping, the bond pulsing chaotically—Jake’s rage, his own fear—and Anna raised the knife, poised to strike.
A snap within him—something, a spark, deep and wild, beyond the feral shift he'd undergone (Chapter 33). His vision cleared, the dim light of the warehouse shining bright, and a raw, primitive roar tore from his throat, shaking the walls. His body exploded, shifting not just but flaring—claws extended, muscles straining, a power he didn't know pouring into his veins. He wrapped Anna's wrist in mid-swing, twisting her hard enough to break bone, her dagger clattering to the floor as she cried out.
She stumbled back, holding her arm, wide-eyed shock, but Sam came on, his growl a rumbling thunder, the air snapping around him. He didn't think—couldn't—his wolf let out, but more, something deep, wild. He gripped her throat, pinning her up against the wall, her feet dangling, her gulps tightening as his claws raked her flesh. Blood oozed, and he could feel it—the surge, the power, a power he did not even know he had, flooding beyond omega, beyond alpha, a power more than Nick's black-eyed violence (Chapter 40).
"Sam!" Jake's voice interrupted, tight, authoritative, and Sam came to a halt, Anna suspended in his arms, her eyes fluttering. He let her go, taking a reeling step back, wind panting, the energy fading as fast as it came, leaving him shaking, empty. Anna collapsed, coughing, alive but broken, her dagger on the ground at her feet.
The warehouse fell silent, Lisa's stifled sobs the only sound, Rufus agog in the corner. Tom's grin cracked, his gun slack in his hand, and Jake—Jake stood still, golden eyes locked on Sam, blood trickling from his side, his face a mask of something different. Not pride, as in the alley (Chapter 34), not anger, as in the shack (Chapter 32)—fear, raw and unmasked, a flicker that froze Sam to his bones.
Sam's hands shook, blood—Anna's, his own—stained on them, the bond a feeble hum now, but Jake's gaze sliced deeper. He'd seen it—the real extent of Sam's strength, a power that rivaled even his own alpha strength, and it scared him. Sam's chest tightened, the realization dawning—Jake, the indomitable alpha, was afraid of what he'd become.
