The Final Battle Begins

The Final Battle Begins
Tony's POV

The bunker door slammed shut, trapping Isabella inside with Vincent Senior.

I threw myself against the metal door, pounding with my fists until my knuckles bled.

"Isabella!" I screamed. "Can you hear me?"

No answer.

"Three minutes until tunnel collapse," the countdown voice announced.

Marcus was working frantically on the door's electronic lock. "I can't break the code fast enough!"

"Then we blow it open," I said, looking around for explosives.

"With what?" Sarah asked desperately. "We don't have any bombs."

That's when we heard gunshots coming from deeper in the tunnel system.

"Someone else is down here," Marcus said grimly.

More armed men appeared from the shadows, but these weren't Vincent Senior's people. They wore different uniforms and carried different weapons.

"Who are you?" I yelled.

"FBI Special Forces," their leader called back. "We're here to arrest Sarah Chen."

Sarah looked confused. "But I'm working with the good guys now."

"Not according to our intelligence," the FBI leader said. "You're wanted for treason and terrorism."

"That's impossible," Sarah said.

But even as she said it, I noticed something strange. Sarah was reaching into her jacket for something.

"Sarah," I said carefully, "what are you doing?"

She pulled out a small metal device I had never seen before. It looked like a computer drive, but with blinking lights.

"I'm sorry, Tony," she said. "But this was always the plan."

"What plan?"

"Vincent Senior isn't the real enemy," Sarah explained. "He's just a distraction. I'm the one who's been building the global criminal network."

My heart sank. "You've been using us."

"I've been using everyone," Sarah said. "Vincent Senior, the FBI, the resistance, all of you. While you were fighting each other, I was taking over everything."

"Two minutes until tunnel collapse."

The FBI agents started shooting at Sarah, but she was already running toward another tunnel exit.

"Stop her!" the FBI leader yelled.

But Marcus grabbed my arm. "Tony, we have to save Isabella first."

He was right. Isabella and Maria were trapped in that bunker, and the whole place was about to collapse.

"Can you get the door open?" I asked Marcus.

"Not with bullets flying everywhere," he said.

The FBI agents and Sarah's hidden soldiers were having a gun battle all around us. Bullets were hitting the walls and ricocheting in every direction.

"This way!" I yelled to Marcus.

We crawled along the floor toward the bunker door, staying low to avoid the gunfire.

That's when I heard something that gave me hope.

Pounding from inside the bunker.

Isabella was trying to break down the door from the other side.

"Isabella!" I yelled through the metal. "Can you hear me?"

"Tony!" her voice came back faintly. "The door is locked from both sides!"

"One minute until tunnel collapse."

I looked around desperately for something to break down the door. That's when I saw Vincent Senior's abandoned equipment bag.

Inside were plastic explosives and a remote detonator.

"Marcus, get back!" I yelled.

I stuck the explosive to the bunker door and activated the timer.

"Isabella, get away from the door!" I screamed.

Five seconds later, the door exploded.

Through the smoke, I could see Isabella running toward me with baby Maria in her arms.

"The tunnel's about to collapse!" I yelled.

"Thirty seconds until tunnel collapse."

But as Isabella reached me, Vincent Senior appeared behind her. He was bleeding from the explosion, but he was still alive and still had his gun.

"Nobody leaves!" he yelled, pointing the weapon at Maria.

That's when something amazing happened.

The FBI leader turned his gun away from Sarah and pointed it at Vincent Senior instead.

"Vincent Senior, you're under arrest!" he yelled.

"I'm not Vincent Senior!" the old man screamed back. "Vincent Senior is dead! I'm just trying to save my family!"

The FBI leader looked confused. "Then who are you?"

"I'm Vincent Russo!" he yelled. "Isabella's real father! Vincent Senior killed me and took my place, but I survived!"

I stared at the bleeding man. "What?"

"The mind control drugs," he said desperately. "Vincent Senior used them on me for years. Made me think I was him. Made me do terrible things. But Isabella's baby crying broke through the programming."

"Fifteen seconds until tunnel collapse."

"Papa?" Isabella said uncertainly.

"It's me, princess," he said, lowering his gun. "It's really me."

But there was no time to figure out if he was telling the truth. The tunnel was about to come down on all of us.

"Everyone run!" Marcus yelled.

We ran toward the nearest exit as fast as we could. Behind us, I could hear the ceiling starting to crack and crumble.

Isabella was having trouble running while carrying Maria, so I took the baby and ran alongside her.

"There!" Marcus pointed to stairs leading up to street level.

We reached the stairs just as the tunnel system collapsed behind us. The sound was like thunder, and dust poured up from the underground.

When we made it to the street, we found ourselves in the middle of chaos.

FBI cars were everywhere. News helicopters were flying overhead. The entire area was blocked off with police tape.

"Tony Moretti!" an FBI agent called out. "You're under arrest!"

"For what?" I demanded.

"Terrorism, kidnapping, and conspiracy," the agent replied.

"That's ridiculous," Isabella said, holding Maria close.

But before the FBI could arrest us, gunshots rang out from the other side of the street.

Sarah Chen was standing on top of a building, firing down at the FBI agents.

"You want to arrest someone?" she yelled. "Try catching me first!"

She threw something down at the FBI cars. When it exploded, it released a cloud of smoke that covered the entire street.

In the confusion, Sarah escaped in a helicopter that had been waiting for her.

As the helicopter flew away, Sarah's voice came through a loudspeaker.

"This isn't over!" she yelled. "I have what I came for!"

The FBI leader grabbed a radio. "What did she take?"

"Sir," came the reply, "she broke into the federal building during the tunnel battle. She stole the nuclear launch codes."

My blood went cold. "Nuclear launch codes?"

"Codes that can control every nuclear weapon in the country," the FBI leader said grimly.

"What does she want them for?" Isabella asked.

"To sell them to the highest bidder," the leader replied. "Foreign governments, terrorist groups, anyone with enough money."

I looked up at Sarah's helicopter disappearing into the distance. "How do we stop her?"

"We don't," the FBI leader said. "She's probably already out of the country by now."

That's when Vincent Russo - or whoever he really was - stumbled over to us.

"There's something you need to know," he said weakly.

"What?" Isabella asked.

"Sarah doesn't have the real launch codes," he said.

"What do you mean?" the FBI leader asked.

"I mean Vincent Senior knew she would try to steal them someday," he explained. "So he had fake codes planted in the federal building. The real codes are hidden somewhere else."

"Where?" I asked.

He looked at Isabella with sad eyes. "With your daughter."

"What?" Isabella said in shock.

"Maria has a computer chip implanted under her skin," he said. "Vincent Senior put it there when she was born. The real nuclear codes are stored on that chip."

I felt sick to my stomach. "You mean our baby is carrying nuclear weapons codes?"

"That's why Vincent Senior wanted her so badly," he said. "Not just to control the crime families, but to control nuclear weapons."

Isabella was staring at Maria in horror. "How do we get the chip out?"

"You don't," he said. "It's connected to her nervous system. Removing it would kill her."

The FBI leader was talking rapidly on his radio, calling for backup and medical teams.

But I was focused on something else.

Sarah's helicopter was turning around. Instead of flying away, it was coming back toward us.

"She figured it out," I said.

"Figured what out?" Marcus asked.

"That the real codes are with Maria," I said. "She's coming back for the baby."

The helicopter landed in the street, and Sarah jumped out with several armed men.

"I want the baby!" she yelled across the chaos.

"Never!" Isabella screamed back.

"Then I'll take her!" Sarah replied.

Her men started shooting at the FBI agents while Sarah ran toward us.

I put myself between Sarah and Isabella, but I didn't have a weapon.

That's when Vincent Russo did something that surprised everyone.

He stepped in front of Sarah and spread his arms wide.

"If you want my granddaughter," he said, "you'll have to go through me."

"Get out of my way, old man," Sarah said, pointing her gun at him.

"No," he said firmly. "I may have done terrible things while under mind control, but I won't let you hurt this baby."

Sarah shot him.

Vincent Russo fell to the ground, but he was still blocking her path to Isabella and Maria.

"Papa!" Isabella screamed.

"Run," he whispered with his last breath. "Take Maria and run."

But there was nowhere to run. Sarah's men had us surrounded, and the FBI agents were pinned down by gunfire.

"Hand over the baby," Sarah demanded, "or I'll kill everyone here."

Isabella looked at me with desperate eyes. "What do we do?"

I looked at Maria, sleeping peacefully in Isabella's arms, unaware that she was carrying the codes to destroy the world.

I looked at Vincent Russo, dying on the ground after trying to protect us.

I looked at Sarah Chen, who would sell nuclear weapons to terrorists for money.

"Isabella," I said quietly, "I need you to trust me."

"What are you going to do?" she asked.

"Something crazy," I said.

I walked toward Sarah with my hands up.

"I'll make you a deal," I called out.

"What kind of deal?" Sarah asked suspiciously.

"I'll tell you how to safely remove the chip from the baby," I said. "But only if you let Isabella and Maria go first."

"You don't know how to remove the chip," Sarah said.

"Vincent Senior told me before he died," I lied. "It can be done, but only if you have the right equipment and the right code."

Sarah looked interested. "What code?"

"Let Isabella go, and I'll tell you," I said.

Sarah thought about it for a moment, then nodded to her men.

"Let the woman and baby leave," she ordered.

But as Isabella started walking toward the FBI agents, Sarah smiled coldly.

"Actually," she said, "I changed my mind."

She pointed her gun at Isabella's back.

"I don't need to remove the chip," Sarah said. "I just need the baby. Dead or alive, the codes will still work."

That's when I realized the horrible truth.

Sarah didn't care about keeping Maria safe.

She was planning to kill both Isabella and the baby, then cut the chip out of Maria's body.

And I had just walked right into her trap.
