The Nuclear Threat

The Nuclear Threat
Isabella's POV

Sarah's gun was pointed at my baby's head.

"Don't move," Sarah said coldly. "Or I pull the trigger."

Maria was sleeping in my arms, completely unaware that she was about to die. The chip inside her body held codes that could destroy entire cities.

"Please," I begged. "She's just a baby."

"She's a nuclear weapon," Sarah replied. "And I'm going to take her apart to get what I need."

Tony was standing next to me, his hands raised. Around us, Sarah's soldiers had their guns pointed at the FBI agents who were pinned down behind cars.

"There has to be another way," I said desperately.

"There is," Sarah said. "You help me escape, and I'll let the baby live."

"You're lying," Tony said.

"Maybe," Sarah admitted with a smile. "But it's the only chance you have."

I looked down at Maria. She was breathing softly, her tiny chest rising and falling. She had my nose and Tony's eyes. She was perfect and innocent.

And she was about to be murdered by a monster.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked.

"Get me past these FBI agents," Sarah said. "Your father had connections everywhere. Use them."

My father. Vincent Russo. He was lying dead on the ground a few feet away. He had died trying to protect us.

"I don't have those connections," I said.

"Yes, you do," Sarah replied. "You're the heir to the Russo empire. One word from you, and every criminal in this city will come to help us."

She was right. My father's network was still out there. People who would do anything I asked because of my family name.

"And if I call them?" I asked.

"Then we all leave here together," Sarah said. "You, me, the baby. Tony stays behind with the FBI."

"No deal," I said immediately.

"Then the baby dies," Sarah said, moving her finger toward the trigger.

"Wait!" I yelled. "Okay. I'll do it."

Tony grabbed my arm. "Isabella, no."

"I have to," I whispered to him. "It's the only way to save Maria."

I pulled out my phone with shaking hands. Sarah watched me carefully as I dialed a number I had memorized years ago.

"Who are you calling?" Sarah asked.

"Antonio Moretti," I said. "Tony's uncle. The one who's been helping the resistance."

The phone rang twice before Antonio answered.

"Isabella? Is that you?"

"I need help," I said. "FBI agents are trying to arrest me. Can you send people?"

There was a pause. "Where are you?"

I gave him our location. Behind Sarah, I could see Tony making small hand signals to the FBI agents. He was trying to tell them something.

"Help is coming," Antonio said. "Twenty minutes."

"Thank you," I said, ending the call.

Sarah smiled. "Smart girl. Now we wait."

But I had done something Sarah didn't know about. When I called Antonio, I had pressed three buttons after his number. It was a code Tony and I had set up months ago.

Three buttons meant: This is a trap. Don't come. Call real police.

"Isabella," Tony said quietly. "What did you just do?"

"I called for help," I said, trying to signal him with my eyes.

Tony's face showed he understood. Help wasn't coming for Sarah. It was coming for us.

But we needed to survive the next twenty minutes.

"While we wait," Sarah said, "let's discuss the nuclear codes."

"What about them?" I asked.

"The chip in your baby's body," Sarah explained. "It contains launch codes for every nuclear weapon in America. Whoever controls those codes controls the world."

"Why would anyone put that in a baby?" Tony demanded.

"Because Vincent Senior was paranoid," Sarah said. "He didn't trust computers or safes. So he put the codes inside something no one would ever suspect."

"A newborn baby," I said, feeling sick.

"Exactly," Sarah replied. "And now that baby is mine."

Maria started stirring in my arms. She was waking up.

"Don't let her cry," Sarah warned. "My men are trained to shoot at the first sign of trouble."

I rocked Maria gently, trying to keep her calm. But she was hungry and uncomfortable.

"Shh, sweetheart," I whispered. "Mama's here."

Maria's eyes opened. For a moment, she looked at me peacefully.

Then she started crying.

"Shut her up!" Sarah yelled.

"I'm trying," I said desperately.

But Maria's cries were getting louder. All around us, Sarah's soldiers were getting nervous.

"She's alerting everyone to our position," one of the soldiers said.

"Then we leave now," Sarah decided. "Before the backup arrives."

She grabbed my arm and started pulling me toward her helicopter. Tony tried to follow, but two soldiers blocked his path.

"Tony stays here," Sarah said.

"No!" I screamed. "You promised!"

"I lied," Sarah said simply.

She was dragging me toward the helicopter when Tony did something incredibly brave. He tackled one of the soldiers and grabbed his gun.

"Let them go!" Tony yelled, pointing the weapon at Sarah.

Sarah used me as a shield, putting her gun to my head.

"Shoot me and Isabella dies," Sarah said.

"Don't shoot!" I yelled to Tony.

But Tony wasn't looking at me. He was looking at something behind Sarah.

"What..." Sarah started to say.

That's when Marcus appeared from behind the helicopter. He had a gun pointed at Sarah's back.

"Drop your weapon," Marcus ordered.

Sarah laughed. "You think I'm afraid of you?"

"You should be," Marcus said. "Because I'm not alone."

More resistance members appeared from the shadows. Alex, Sofia, Emma, and dozens of others. They all had weapons pointed at Sarah's soldiers.

"It's over, Sarah," Marcus said.

But Sarah just smiled. "No, it's just beginning."

She pressed a button on a device attached to her belt.

Immediately, explosions went off all around us. Cars exploded, buildings caught fire, and smoke filled the street.

In the chaos, Sarah's soldiers started shooting at everyone. The resistance fired back. The FBI agents joined the fight.

It was a war zone.

"Tony!" I screamed, looking for him in the smoke.

I couldn't see him anywhere. Maria was crying louder, scared by all the noise.

"This way!" Marcus yelled, grabbing my arm.

He pulled me toward a car that was still intact. We jumped inside just as bullets hit the windows.

"Where's Tony?" I demanded.

"I don't know," Marcus said, starting the engine.

"We can't leave without him!"

"We have to get the baby to safety first," Marcus said.

He drove away from the battle as fast as he could. Behind us, I could see flames and smoke rising into the sky.

"Turn around!" I yelled. "We have to go back for Tony!"

"Isabella, listen to me," Marcus said firmly. "Tony told me to get you and Maria out no matter what. He knew Sarah would try to take the baby."

"But he could be hurt," I said, tears running down my face.

"He's strong," Marcus said. "He'll survive."

But even as he said it, my phone buzzed with a message.

It was from Sarah's number.

I opened the message and saw a photo that made my heart stop.

It was Tony, lying on the ground in a pool of blood. His eyes were closed and he wasn't moving.

Below the photo was a message: "He tried to be a hero. Now he's dead. Bring me the baby or I'll kill everyone else you love."

"No," I whispered. "No, no, no."

Marcus looked at the photo. "Isabella, that could be fake."

"Look at the timestamp," I said. "It was taken thirty seconds ago."

The photo was real. Tony had been shot. My husband, the father of my child, was lying dead in the street.

"We have to go back," I said desperately.

"If we go back, Sarah gets the baby," Marcus said.

"I don't care!" I screamed. "Tony is dying!"

Maria was crying harder now, sensing my panic. I held her close and sobbed.

Marcus pulled the car over. "Isabella, look at me."

I looked at him through my tears.

"Tony would want you to save Maria," Marcus said. "Not him. The baby comes first."

"But he's my everything," I said.

"And she's his everything," Marcus said, pointing to Maria. "Don't let his sacrifice be for nothing."

I looked down at my daughter. She was crying, scared, and had no idea that her father might be dead.

"What do I do?" I asked desperately.

"We get that chip out of her," Marcus said. "Then we use it to trap Sarah."

"How? Removing the chip will kill Maria."

"Not if we do it right," Marcus said. "I know a doctor who specializes in this kind of surgery."

"Where?"

"Three hours away," Marcus said. "But we have to leave now."

I looked back toward the smoke and fire where Tony was. Every instinct I had was screaming at me to go back for him.

But Maria needed me more.

"Okay," I said finally. "Let's go."

Marcus started driving again. As we left the city, I kept looking at the photo on my phone.

Tony's still body. The blood. The closed eyes.

"Please be alive," I whispered. "Please."

My phone buzzed again. Another message from Sarah.

This time it was a video.

I almost didn't want to watch it, but I had to know.

The video showed Tony lying on the ground, exactly like in the photo. But then the camera moved, showing someone standing over him.

It was Sarah.

"Hello, Isabella," she said into the camera. "As you can see, Tony is still alive. Barely."

The camera showed Tony's face. His eyes opened slightly and he looked directly at the lens.

"Isabella," he whispered weakly. "Don't... don't come back for me."

"But he won't be alive for long," Sarah continued. "The bullet hit his lung. Without medical attention in the next hour, he'll drown in his own blood."

She smiled at the camera.

"So here's my offer. Bring me the baby, and I'll let doctors treat Tony. Keep the baby, and watch your husband die."

The video ended.

I stared at the screen, unable to breathe.

"Marcus," I said. "Turn the car around."

"Isabella, no."

"Turn it around!" I screamed. "I'm not letting Tony die!"

"If you go back, Sarah wins," Marcus said. "She gets the nuclear codes and destroys the world."

"I don't care about the world!" I yelled. "I care about my husband!"

"And what about Maria?" Marcus asked. "What about your daughter?"

I looked down at the baby in my arms. She had finally stopped crying and was looking up at me with those big innocent eyes.

"I..." I started to say.

That's when my phone rang.

It was Tony's number.

I answered immediately. "Tony?"

But it wasn't Tony's voice.

It was Sarah.

"Decision time, Isabella," she said cheerfully. "Your husband or your daughter. Who do you love more?"

"I love them both," I said desperately.

"Then choose," Sarah said. "You have five minutes to turn around and come back, or Tony bleeds out."

"How do I know you'll keep your word?" I asked.

"You don't," Sarah admitted. "But it's the only chance Tony has."

She hung up.

I sat there, holding my baby, thinking about my husband dying on the street.

"What do I do?" I asked Marcus.

But before he could answer, something happened that changed everything.

Maria reached up and touched my face with her tiny hand.

And in that moment, I understood something important.

Tony would never forgive me if I traded our daughter for his life.

He would rather die than let Maria fall into Sarah's hands.

"Keep driving," I told Marcus.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

"No," I said honestly. "But Tony made his choice when he attacked Sarah's soldier. He chose to save us."

"He chose to be a hero," Marcus said quietly.

"And I have to honor that choice," I said, even though it was breaking my heart.

We drove for another thirty minutes in silence. My phone kept buzzing with messages from Sarah, but I didn't look at them.

Finally, Marcus pulled into a small hospital in the middle of nowhere.

"This is where the doctor works," he said.

We went inside and found a woman in a white coat waiting for us.

"I'm Dr. Chen," she said.

I stared at her. "Chen? Like Sarah Chen?"

"Sarah is my sister," the doctor said. "But I'm nothing like her."

"How do I know that?" I asked suspiciously.

"Because I'm the one who's going to save your baby," she said. "And stop my sister from destroying the world."

She led us to an examination room where medical equipment was set up.

"Lay the baby on the table," Dr. Chen said.

I put Maria down gently. She started crying again, not wanting to leave my arms.

"This won't hurt her," Dr. Chen promised. "I'm just going to locate the chip with an X-ray."

She moved a machine over Maria's body. On a screen, I could see inside my baby.

And there it was. A tiny computer chip next to Maria's spine.

"Can you remove it without killing her?" I asked.

Dr. Chen studied the image carefully.

"Yes," she said finally. "But there's something you need to know."

"What?"

"The chip isn't just storing nuclear codes," Dr. Chen said. "It's also monitoring Maria's vital signs."

"What does that mean?"

"It means if her heart stops, the chip automatically sends a signal," Dr. Chen explained.

"A signal to what?"

Dr. Chen's face went pale.

"To every nuclear weapon in America," she said. "If Maria dies, the missiles launch automatically."

I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me.

"Are you saying..." I started.

"I'm saying your baby is a dead man's switch," Dr. Chen said. "Vincent Senior rigged it so that if anything happens to her, the world ends."

"That's insane," Marcus said.

"That's Vincent Senior," Dr. Chen replied.

I looked down at Maria, sleeping peacefully on the examination table.

My innocent baby was a weapon that could destroy the world.

And somewhere in the city, Tony was bleeding to death because I chose to save her instead of him.

"Tell me there's a way to fix this," I begged Dr. Chen.

She was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said words that made my blood freeze.

"There is a way," Dr. Chen said slowly. "But you're going to hate it."
