The Underground Tunnels

The Underground Tunnels
Isabella's POV

My father was pointing a gun at my head.

"You figured it out," he said calmly. "I was wondering when you would."

Tony stepped in front of me. "Vincent Senior."

"That's right," my father said. "Vincent Russo died years ago. I took his place, raised his daughter, and built his empire."

I felt sick to my stomach. "You killed my real father."

"Your real father was weak," Vincent Senior said. "Just like you're weak now."

"Where's Maria?" I demanded.

"Somewhere safe," he replied. "But not for long if you don't cooperate."

That's when Marcus grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the ground.

"Subway entrance!" he yelled. "Everyone down!"

I looked where he was pointing and saw a metal grate in the street. Marcus ripped it open just as Vincent Senior's men started shooting.

"Go!" Tony pushed me toward the hole.

I jumped down into the dark tunnel below. Tony landed next to me, then Marcus, then Sarah.

Above us, I could hear Vincent Senior screaming orders to his men.

"Find them! They can't have gone far!"

"This way," Marcus whispered, leading us deeper into the tunnel.

The underground passage was dark and smelled like old water. Our footsteps echoed off the walls as we ran.

"Where does this lead?" I asked.

"Old subway system," Marcus said. "Most of it hasn't been used in twenty years."

Behind us, I could hear Vincent Senior's men climbing down into the tunnel.

"They're following us," Tony said.

"I know," Marcus replied. "But I know these tunnels better than they do."

We reached a place where the tunnel split into three different directions.

"Which way?" I asked.

Marcus stopped and listened carefully. "Left. There's an old station that way."

We ran down the left tunnel until we reached what looked like an abandoned subway platform. There were old benches and signs, but everything was covered in dust.

"We can rest here for a minute," Marcus said.

I sat down on one of the benches, trying to catch my breath. "Vincent Senior is my father. How is that possible?"

"He's not your father," Tony said gently. "He killed your father and took his place."

"But I have memories," I said desperately. "Childhood memories of him taking care of me."

"False memories," Sarah said. "The mind control drugs can plant fake memories along with erasing real ones."

"So nothing I remember is real?" I asked.

"Some of it might be real," Sarah said. "But Vincent Senior probably changed the important parts."

I tried to think back to my earliest memories. My father reading me bedtime stories. My father teaching me to ride a bike. My father comforting me when I had nightmares.

Had any of that really happened?

"Isabella," Tony said softly. "It doesn't matter who raised you. What matters is who you are now."

"And who am I now?" I asked.

"You're a mother fighting to save her child," Tony said. "That's all that matters."

Sarah was looking around the abandoned station. "Someone's been using this place recently."

"What do you mean?" Marcus asked.

She pointed to fresh footprints in the dust. "These tracks are only a few days old."

We followed the footprints to a door marked "Authorized Personnel Only."

Marcus tried the handle. "It's unlocked."

He opened the door and we found ourselves in a modern office space. There were computers, phones, filing cabinets, and maps on the walls.

"This is my base," Sarah said, looking around in surprise.

"Your base?" I asked.

"I remember now," Sarah said. "Before the mind control drugs, I was investigating Vincent Senior's network. This is where I kept all my evidence."

She walked over to one of the computers and turned it on.

"Look at this," she said, showing us files on the screen.

The files contained information about criminal organizations all over the world. Drug cartels in South America. Arms dealers in Europe. Human traffickers in Asia.

"Vincent Senior wasn't just controlling crime families in this city," Sarah explained. "He was building a global network."

"How big?" Tony asked.

Sarah scrolled through more files. "Twelve countries. Hundreds of criminal organizations. Billions of dollars."

"And Maria fits into this how?" I asked.

Sarah opened another file. "He needs an heir. Someone young enough to control completely, but with the right bloodline to command respect from the crime families."

"She's just a baby," I said.

"She's the future empress of a criminal empire," Sarah replied. "Vincent Senior plans to raise her to be the most powerful crime boss in history."

I felt sick thinking about my innocent daughter being turned into a monster.

"We have to find her," I said.

Sarah kept looking through the files. "Wait. There's something here about a bunker."

She showed us a map of the tunnel system. One section was marked in red.

"Underground bunker, two miles north of here," Sarah read. "Maximum security. Perfect for holding high-value prisoners."

"That's where Maria is," Tony said.

"Has to be," I agreed.

Sarah printed out the map and directions to the bunker.

"It won't be easy to get there," she warned. "Vincent Senior has guards posted throughout these tunnels."

"Then we'll have to be careful," Marcus said.

We left the office and started following the map through the tunnel system. Every few minutes, we had to stop and hide when we heard voices or footsteps.

"There," Tony whispered, pointing ahead.

I could see light coming from a doorway at the end of the tunnel. As we got closer, I could hear the sound of machines running.

"That's it," Sarah said, checking the map. "The bunker."

We crept up to the doorway and looked inside. It was like a small underground hospital, with medical equipment and monitoring systems.

And in the center of the room, connected to several machines, was a tiny bed with a baby in it.

"Maria," I whispered.

I started to run toward her, but Tony grabbed my arm.

"Wait," he said. "Look around."

I forced myself to stop and really look at the room. There were cameras in every corner. Motion sensors by the door. Armed guards standing at attention.

"It's a trap," Marcus said.

"I don't care," I said. "That's my daughter."

"Isabella, if you run in there, you'll get captured too," Sarah said. "Then who will save Maria?"

She was right, but every instinct I had was screaming at me to grab my baby and run.

"There has to be another way in," I said.

Sarah studied the room layout. "Air conditioning vent. Upper right corner."

I looked where she was pointing and saw a metal grate near the ceiling.

"Can we get up there?" I asked.

"I can," Marcus said. "I'm the smallest."

"No," I said. "I'm going. She's my daughter."

"Isabella, you just had a baby a few days ago," Tony said. "You're not strong enough for that kind of climb."

"I'm strong enough for anything when it comes to Maria," I said firmly.

Tony looked into my eyes and saw that I meant it.

"Okay," he said. "But I'm going with you."

"The vent won't hold both of us," I said.

"Then I'll create a distraction," Tony said. "Draw the guards away while you get Maria."

"What kind of distraction?" Marcus asked.

Tony smiled grimly. "The kind that involves lots of noise and explosions."

Before anyone could argue, we heard something that made us all freeze.

Slow clapping.

Someone was applauding from behind us in the tunnel.

We turned around and saw Vincent Senior walking toward us. Behind him were at least twenty armed men, all pointing weapons at us.

"Bravo," Vincent Senior said. "You found my bunker. I'm impressed."

"Let Maria go," I said. "She's innocent in all this."

"Maria is the whole point," Vincent Senior replied. "She's the key to everything I've built."

"She's a baby," Tony said angrily.

"She's a weapon," Vincent Senior corrected. "The most powerful weapon in the world. A crime boss who starts learning the business from birth."

"I'll never let you turn her into that," I said.

"You don't have a choice," Vincent Senior said. "Because you're about to join her."

His men moved closer, surrounding us completely.

"You see," Vincent Senior continued, "I need you alive too, Isabella. Maria will need her mother during the early years. After that..." He shrugged.

"After that, you'll kill me," I said.

"After that, you'll no longer be necessary," he agreed.

That's when Sarah did something unexpected. She pulled out a small device that looked like a garage door opener.

"What is that?" Vincent Senior asked.

"Emergency lockdown protocol," Sarah said. "Something I built into this base before you drugged me."

She pressed the button.

Immediately, metal doors started slamming shut throughout the tunnel system. Emergency lights came on, bathing everything in red.

"What did you do?" Vincent Senior demanded.

"I sealed off all the exits," Sarah said. "No one gets in or out until I enter the unlock code."

"Then enter it!" Vincent Senior yelled.

"Not until you let us take Maria and leave safely," Sarah said.

Vincent Senior laughed. "You just trapped yourself in here with us."

"That's right," Sarah said. "But I also trapped you in here with the bunker's self-destruct system."

"What self-destruct system?" Vincent Senior asked nervously.

Sarah pointed to red lights that were now blinking throughout the bunker.

"The one that activates when the emergency lockdown is triggered," she said. "We have ten minutes before this whole section of tunnels collapses."

Vincent Senior's face went white. "You're bluffing."

"Am I?" Sarah asked.

The blinking lights were getting faster, and I could hear a countdown voice coming from speakers in the walls.

"Nine minutes and thirty seconds until tunnel collapse," the voice announced.

"You'll kill everyone," Vincent Senior said. "Including the baby."

"Not if you let us go," Sarah replied.

"And if I don't?"

Sarah smiled coldly. "Then we all die together. But at least Maria won't grow up to be a monster."

Vincent Senior looked at his men, then at the blinking lights, then at us.

"Fine," he said finally. "Take the baby and go."

But even as he said it, I could see him signaling to his men with hand gestures.

He was planning something.

"Tony," I whispered. "He's not really going to let us go."

Tony nodded. "I know."

"Eight minutes until tunnel collapse," the voice announced.

That's when everything went crazy.

Vincent Senior's men started shooting at us while we ran toward the bunker entrance.

Sarah was trying to enter codes into her device to unlock the exits.

Marcus was throwing smoke grenades to give us cover.

And I was running toward my daughter as bullets flew around my head.

I reached Maria's bed and saw her little face for the first time in days. She was sleeping peacefully, connected to machines that were monitoring her breathing and heartbeat.

"Mama's here," I whispered, disconnecting her from the equipment.

I picked her up and held her close. She opened her eyes and looked at me, and I swear she smiled.

"Seven minutes until tunnel collapse."

"Isabella!" Tony yelled. "We have to go now!"

I ran toward the exit with Maria in my arms, but Vincent Senior was blocking the way.

"You're not taking her anywhere," he said, pointing his gun at me.

"Get out of my way," I said.

"Never," he replied.

That's when Maria started crying. Just like before, her innocent cry seemed to affect everyone who heard it.

Even Vincent Senior lowered his gun slightly.

"She's just a baby," he said, almost to himself.

"She's YOUR baby," I said desperately. "Your great-granddaughter. Don't you want her to have a normal life?"

For a moment, Vincent Senior looked confused. Like he was remembering something he had forgotten.

"I... I used to have a granddaughter," he said slowly.

"You still do," I said. "This is her. This is Maria."

"Six minutes until tunnel collapse."

Vincent Senior stared at Maria with tears in his eyes. "I remember now. I remember loving someone more than power."

"Then let us go," I begged. "Let her grow up free."

Vincent Senior nodded and stepped aside.

But as I ran past him toward the exit, I heard him whisper something that made my blood freeze.

"I'm sorry, Isabella. But I lied."

The exit door slammed shut in front of me.

I was trapped in the bunker with Maria, while Tony, Marcus, and Sarah were trapped in the tunnel outside.

"Five minutes until tunnel collapse."

Vincent Senior was standing behind me with his gun raised again.

"You see," he said, "I can't let you leave. Not when you've seen too much."

"But you said..." I started.

"I said what I needed to say to get close to you," Vincent Senior replied. "Now give me the baby."

I backed away from him, holding Maria tighter.

"Never," I said.

"Then we'll all die together when this place collapses," Vincent Senior said.

That's when I realized the most terrifying truth of all.

Vincent Senior wasn't planning to escape.

He was planning to die here with Maria and me.

Because if he couldn't control us, he would make sure no one else could either.

"Four minutes until tunnel collapse."

And I was trapped underground with a madman who would rather kill his own great-granddaughter than lose control of her.
