Chapter 61 THE DESTINY THAT NEVER EXPECTED HER
Chapter 61 THE DESTINY THAT NEVER EXPECTED HER
The Vale shuddered.
Not with wind.
Not with movement.
But with a deep, resonant tremor — as though it had just realized a forbidden truth, and the weight of it shook the very roots beneath Ella’s knees.
The crack in the boundary widened with a sound like ice fracturing over an endless lake. Light bled out in shimmering threads. Shadows pulled inward like breath being sucked through a narrow throat.
The Second Echo’s hand reached farther through the crack.
Not fully.
Not even halfway.
But enough for its presence to stain the golden air.
Ella stared at it, her lungs tightening painfully, her heart pounding with a rhythm too fast, too sharp to belong solely to her.
Destiny.
A word she had never wanted.
A word that now wrapped itself around her throat.
“You’re lying,” she whispered, but her voice vibrated unsteadily. “I wasn’t meant for him? I wasn’t meant for Raine?”
The Echo’s laugh was quiet, elegant, and merciless.
You were meant for the First Mirror, little Vessel.
You rewrote that path.
You tore his thread apart.
And now you cling to a boy who was never yours.
Ella felt something crack inside her chest — something fragile and unsteady, something she didn’t even know was there. Raine stepped between her and the crack, his shoulders tense, his stance protective, his hands glowing faintly at his sides.
He didn’t look back at her.
But he didn’t have to.
Ella felt him — through the new bond that had formed between them, thin as a whisper, bright as a spark.
“Ella,” Raine said, voice steady but soft, “don’t listen to it.”
She swallowed hard, her hands shaking. “It knew the name. Second. I never told it. I didn’t even know I knew—”
“That doesn’t mean it owns you.”
He turned then, catching her gaze, and the emotion in his eyes nearly dropped her to her knees.
“You rewrote destiny once. Why can’t you rewrite it again?”
Ella’s breath trembled.
She wanted to believe him.
She wanted to lean into the warmth in his voice.
She wanted to press her forehead into his shoulder and let him carry half the weight.
But the Echo wasn’t done.
You misunderstand him, Vessel.
He is not choosing you.
He is choosing what you made him.
A boy with no past.
You erased what tied him to anyone else.
Even to himself.
Ella stiffened.
Raine’s jaw clenched. “Stop.”
If he had memory, he would not look at you with devotion.
He would not defend you.
He would not love you.
He would remember who you were meant for.
Who he was meant to be.
“ENOUGH!” Raine shouted, and the white light around him flared so violently the crack shrank for a moment.
Ella flinched at the power — not from fear, but from shock.
Raine turned to her again.
This time his voice trembled.
“Even if it’s true… even if destiny didn’t plan you for me—”
He stepped closer.
Ella’s breath hitched.
“—I don’t care. I don’t want a destiny that was written for someone else.”
His fingers brushed hers, tentative and trembling.
“I want what we build.”
Ella gasped — not from the words, but from the way they resonated in her bones, like the Vale had spoken through him.
The Echo hissed.
Foolish boy.
What you build cannot withstand the weight of power she does not understand.
The Vessel is changing.
Becoming something new.
Something dangerous.
Ella stared at her hands.
They glowed faintly — not white like Raine’s, not gold like the Vale, but something between.
Something shifting.
Something alive.
“What… am I becoming?” she whispered.
The Echo answered.
The first Vessel who can choose her imprint.
The only one who can create her own fate.
Something Echoes cannot predict.
Something we cannot control.
A chill raced up Ella’s spine.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Raine reached for her again, grounding her. “Ella… whatever you’re becoming, you’re not alone in it.”
His thumb brushed her cheek.
She closed her eyes, leaning into the warmth.
The Vale responded — its branches lowering slightly, its mist thickening around their feet, as if trying to cocoon them in safety.
But Kael groaned behind them.
Ella gasped, breaking away from Raine and lifting her skirt as she hurried toward him.
Raine followed instantly.
Kael lay sprawled beneath the tree, his chest rising shallowly, his skin gray with exhaustion. The binding-thread pulsed weakly under his collarbone, flickering like a dying star.
Ella knelt beside him, panic clawing up her throat.
“Kael—Kael, stay with me—”
She touched his cheek; his skin was ice-cold.
“Please, Kael—don’t—”
His eyes fluttered open — barely slits — but he looked at her with clarity.
“…Ella.”
His voice was little more than breath.
“You’re awake.”
She nodded, tears spilling onto his hand.
“Yes. Yes, I’m here. Hold on.”
He swallowed with difficulty. “Not… long.”
Ella shook her head violently. “Don’t say that—”
Kael smiled faintly, wincing as pain rippled through him.
“You have no idea… what you look like now.”
Ella froze.
“What do you mean?”
Kael lifted a trembling finger, pointing at her chest where the light swirled faintly beneath her skin.
“You’re not a Vessel anymore,” he whispered.
“You’re… more.”
Ella stared at him, heart pounding.
The Echo’s voice rang out from the crack, filled with reverence and hunger.
Indeed.
She is becoming a Conduit.
Ella’s blood iced over.
Raine stiffened. “A what?”
The rarest form, the most unstable.
A soul that can hold BOTH memory and creation.
Past and future.
Echo and fate.
She will unmake the world if she tries to hold all threads at once.
Ella trembled violently.
“Raine…” she whispered.
He grabbed her hand instantly. “You’re not unmaking anything. You’re learning who you are.”
But Ella wasn’t sure.
Not anymore.
Not when the light under her skin pulsed faster, stronger, hotter.
The Vale trembled again — this time violently.
The crack widened.
The Echo’s arm pushed farther through, its form sharpening, almost solid.
Kael’s body jerked with the destabilizing shift.
Ella screamed his name — but her voice broke.
Raine stood, planting himself between Ella and the crack, his white light flaring up his arms.
“Get away from her.”
The Echo smiled.
Protect her while you still can, Unwritten One.
For when her power completes itself…
she may not recognize you at all.
Ella gasped, a sharp pain tearing through her chest.
Her glow intensified.
Her breath fractured.
Her power surged—
And for the first time—
she reached for it.
Not to hide.
Not to defend.
To fight.
