Chapter 62 THE CONDUIT WHO STOOD AT THE EDGE OF BREAKING

Chapter 62 THE CONDUIT WHO STOOD AT THE EDGE OF BREAKING
The Vale had never feared anything.
Not the Echoes.
Not time.
Not the world outside.

But now it trembled.

Ella staggered to her feet, clutching her chest as white-gold veins of power surged beneath her skin, pulsing like living lightning. Her breath tore through her lungs in quick, broken gasps. The air around her heated, shimmering with a force that did not belong to any Vessel, Mirror, or memory-born soul.

She was becoming something new.

Something forbidden.

Something the Echoes had not foreseen.

Raine stood in front of her, refusing to move even as the crack in the Vale widened another inch, spilling cold, shimmering shadow across the ground like black ink flowing from a shattered mirror.

“Ella, listen to me,” Raine said, voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. “Whatever is happening, we’ll face it together.”

She pressed a shaking hand to his shoulder—
and he sucked in a breath.

Her power surged into him.

Not violently.
Not painfully.

But like a river meeting another river, a current that recognized his shape.

“Raine…” Ella whispered, fear cracking through her voice.
“Move away from me. I don’t know if I can control—”

“I’m not moving,” he whispered back, taking her wrist gently and lowering her hand. “Not when you need me.”

The Vale’s light flickered as if startled.

Ella’s glowing eyes widened. “You don’t understand. I’m—”

Her body convulsed.

A burst of light exploded from her chest, illuminating the entire ridge. Mist whirled violently, spiraling up around them like a storm forming beneath the earth.

Ella fell to her knees.

Raine dropped with her, arms circling her instinctively, holding her against him as if his touch could anchor her to the world.

“Ella—Ella—talk to me—tell me what you feel—”

Ella’s fingers curled into his shirt.
Her voice trembled so hard it barely held shape.

“It feels like I’m… splitting.”

Raine tightened his hold.

Ella’s glow pulsed again, brighter, hotter, until the air sizzled.

And then—
something snapped.

The power inside her erupted outward in a brilliant wave.

White and gold.
Heat and cold.
Memory and creation intertwined.

The impact knocked Raine back—
but not away.

Never away.

His fingers dug into the earth, and the moment he steadied himself, he crawled back to her, shielding her with his own body as the power spiraled outward in burning arcs.

“Ella!” he shouted over the roaring wind. “Focus—look at me—EllA—!”

She raised her face—

and for a single heartbeat, he saw her.

Not glowing.
Not breaking.

Her.

Ella.

The girl whose tears he remembered even without memory.
The girl whose voice lived inside him now.
The girl who had rewritten souls and destinies without meaning to.

She trembled.

“Raine… I’m scared.”

He gathered her face between his palms, forcing her to meet his gaze.

“I’m right here.”

Her eyes softened.
Her body loosened.
Her breath steadied.

And her power began to center.

Not rage.
Not fear.

Him.

The Vale reacted instantly—its mist curling protectively around them, its roots glowing brighter beneath Ella’s knees.

But the crack behind them screamed.

The Second Echo pushed harder, its silhouette forcing itself through the boundary. The Vale resisted, but the crack widened another inch, then another.

You cannot hold her together, boy.
She is becoming something volatile.
Unpredictable.
A Conduit is a storm that shatters its own sky.

Raine turned his head toward the crack, eyes burning with white light.

“That’s her choice. Not yours.”

The Echo laughed.

Is it?
Tell her what you truly feel.
Tell her the truth of your heart.
Let us see if your love survives what she becomes.

Ella flinched, power sparking violently.

Raine turned back to her.

“Ella—look at me. Not at it.”

Her fingers trembled against his cheek.
“I can feel everything, Raine… your light, my memories, the Vale, the Echo… all of it is inside me—too much—I can’t—”

“Yes you can.”
He pressed his forehead to hers.
“Breathe with me.”

Ella inhaled.

Raine inhaled.

Their breaths synced—
and Ella’s power softened.

Calmed.

Flowed.

Until for a moment the whole world stilled.

Her eyes shimmered with tears.

“Why does this work?” she whispered.

Raine smiled softly, brushing her cheek with his thumb.

“I don’t know.”

But the Vale knew.

A warm pulse rolled across the ground—

Two souls rewritten
choosing each other
over fate.

The Echo snarled.

You are not choosing him, Vessel—
you are clinging to the boy you remade.
You chose Raine because you erased the man who came before him.

Ella’s breath hitched.

Raine’s fingers tightened around hers.

“Ella,” he whispered, “don’t listen—”

But the Echo pushed deeper.

You loved the First Mirror once.
Before you broke him.
Before you rewrote your destiny.
Before you reached for the wrong soul.

Ella went rigid.

Raine stiffened.
“What…? Ella—”

“I don’t remember loving anyone before you,” she whispered. “I don’t—”

That is because YOU tore the thread apart.
Not him.
YOU severed the merging.
YOU erased the man who was meant to be yours.
YOU destroyed the Mirror.

Ella’s hands flew to her temples.

“No—no—stop—stop—RAINE—!”

Raine caught her instantly, pulling her into his chest.

“Ella, breathe, I’ve got you—listen to my voice—”

But her glow surged violently—

Kael groaned on the ridge behind them.

Raine turned just in time to see Kael’s body arch in agony, the binding-thread pulsing and dimming at once.

“KAEL!” Ella screamed, trying to reach for him—

Her power exploded again.

This time Raine shielded her with his entire body, taking the brunt of it. The shockwave knocked him backward, but he didn’t let go. Not for a second.

“Ella—listen—listen to me—”

She shook violently, sobbing.

“I broke destiny,” she whispered.
“I broke someone who loved me—
and I didn’t even remember—
Raine—what if I ruin you too—?”

Raine cupped the back of her head and pressed her forehead to his.

“Ella.
I’m not him.
And you didn’t ruin me.”

She cried harder.

“I’m becoming something dangerous—”

“Then I’ll stand with you until you learn to control it.”

“I might lose myself—”

“Then I’ll pull you back.”

“I’m not meant for you—”

He kissed the corner of her mouth.

“But I choose you.”

The Vale erupted in gold.

The Echo screamed.

Kael’s pulse flickered.

And Ella—

Ella finally embraced her power.

The white-gold light in her chest surged upward and outward, forming a protective ring around all three of them—
a Conduit’s circle.

A sphere of destiny rewritten.

A force no Echo had ever seen.

The Echo reeled back from the barrier, its form distorting.

Impossible…
IMPOSSIBLE—
A Conduit choosing something that was not written—
The world will break—

Ella stood, hair lifting in a glowing halo, power streaming from her fingertips like threads pulled from the dawn.

Her voice was soft.

But it commanded the entire Vale.

“I don’t care what was written,” she whispered.
“I choose him.”
She lifted Raine’s hand to her heart.
“And he chooses me.”

Raine stood beside her, white light burning across his arms.

“I’m not your Mirror,” he told the Echo.
“And I never will be.”

Ella stepped forward, raising her palm.

“Leave this place.”

The Echo’s scream shook the Vale to its core.

The crack shattered.

Light exploded.
