Chapter 60 THE THREE WHO WERE NEVER MEANT TO MEET
Chapter 60 THE THREE WHO WERE NEVER MEANT TO MEET
Ella inhaled sharply, the breath trembling through her chest like the first gasp after drowning. Her eyes glowed—bright, blinding, white—before slowly softening into something gentler, but still unnatural.
She blinked, dazed.
Raine froze, knees sinking into the glowing roots, his hands hovering inches from her face.
“Ella…?” he whispered.
Her gaze shifted to him.
And for the first time in what felt like forever—
she saw him.
Truly saw him.
Her fingers lifted weakly toward his cheek. “Raine…”
His heart nearly stopped.
He caught her hand, clutching it to his skin.
“I’m here,” he breathed. “I’m here. I never left you.”
Ella’s eyes flickered.
The glow inside them dimmed, but did not fade.
She pushed herself upright slowly, Raine supporting her back with trembling hands.
And then—
she looked past him.
Toward the boundary of the Vale.
Her expression changed.
Softness dissolved.
Recognition sharpened.
Something ancient stirred behind her irises.
Raine followed her gaze.
He saw nothing.
But Ella did.
She whispered again, voice steadier:
“Second…”
Raine shivered. “Ella… how do you know that name?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she lifted her hand and placed it over her heart. Light pulsed beneath her palm—soft, rhythmic, deliberate.
“When I was between worlds,” she murmured, “something spoke to me.”
Raine’s grip tightened. “Ella… what spoke to you?”
Ella looked at him with an expression that made his breath catch—a mixture of awe, fear, and acceptance.
“My own soul,” she whispered.
“Or what’s becoming my soul.”
Raine’s stomach twisted. “Ella—what does that mean?”
But Ella’s breath hitched suddenly.
She clutched her ribs, gasping as her body shook with a violent tremor.
Raine grabbed her shoulders. “Ella—Ella—HEY—what’s wrong—?!”
Her glow flared, sparking up her throat like lightning under her skin.
“The merging…” she panted, voice cracking. “It’s reforming. Rewriting itself around what you gave me.”
Raine felt a wave of guilt crash through him.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you—”
“You didn’t,” she whispered fiercely, gripping his shirt. “You saved me. You anchored me.”
Then she leaned into him—
her forehead resting against his, their breaths mixing in the warm Vale air.
Raine held her like she was the only real thing left in the world.
“You came back,” he whispered, voice breaking.
“You really came back.”
Ella exhaled shakily, her fingers brushing his jaw.
“I always come back to you.”
And something inside Raine—
something deep, unsteady, still rewiring itself—
answered her.
A soft white glow rose from his chest.
Ella touched it, eyes widening.
“That’s… creation,” she murmured.
“But not like before.”
Raine swallowed. “Is that bad?”
Ella shook her head.
“No.
It’s you.”
At the edge of the Vale
A figure staggered into the golden mist.
Kael.
Pale.
Broken.
Barely breathing.
His hand dragged across the ground as he pulled himself forward, leaving streaks of blood in the grass.
He reached the base of the ridge and collapsed completely.
“Ella… Raine…”
His voice cracked and vanished.
Behind him
The Second Echo pressed its hand against the Vale’s boundary, fury radiating off its form.
She awakens changed.
He awakens rewritten.
And the tethered one dies.
All threads unravel.
All paths converge.
It slammed both hands against the barrier—
cracks flickering in the air like lightning.
I WILL ENTER.
I WILL CLAIM WHAT IS MINE.
But the Vale held.
For now.
At the tree
Ella stiffened suddenly, gasping, clutching her chest.
Raine immediately wrapped his arms around her.
“What’s happening—?”
“Kael…” she breathed.
“He’s close. But his soul— it’s collapsing… Raine, we have to—”
But before she could finish—
the Vale pulsed violently.
Ella’s glow flickered.
Raine’s power surged involuntarily.
Their joined lights tangled—
woven, intertwined, inseparable.
A bond formed.
Not merging.
Not memory.
Something new.
Something older than Echoes.
Older than destiny.
The Vale whispered through the air:
Two rewritten souls
both choosing each other
for the first time.
Raine looked at Ella, breathless.
Ella looked at Raine, trembling.
And the Second Echo screamed at the boundary, feeling a bond form that should not exist.
The Vale pulsed.
A soft tremor rippled through the golden mist, stirring the air around Ella and Raine. The ancient tree’s branches shivered overhead, scattering shards of glowing light that drifted down like feathers.
Ella lifted her hand, watching the light swirl around her fingers.
It didn’t settle on her skin—
it inhaled into her.
Like she was no longer simply a vessel.
Like she had become something the Vale recognized.
“Raine…” she whispered, staring at her own trembling hands.
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Raine gently touched her wrist.
“What wasn’t?”
Ella met his eyes—bright, warm, newly awake.
“My soul— it’s not just a Vessel anymore. It… reshaped itself when I gave you my memory. And when you gave me some of your light back… it changed again.”
Raine’s chest tightened.
“Changed how?”
Ella swallowed hard.
“I think— I think I’m becoming something new.”
Another tremor shook the Vale.
Ella flinched.
Raine pulled her closer instinctively, his fingers spreading across her back in protective arcs.
He didn’t know why it felt natural.
He didn’t question it.
He just held her.
“Whatever you’re becoming,” he whispered, “you’re still you.”
Ella leaned into him, her forehead brushing his jaw.
But her voice was haunted.
“You say that like you know me.”
Raine shook his head gently.
“No. I don’t remember everything.”
He cupped her face.
“But I know enough.”
She softened.
Her breath trembled.
Then suddenly—
she doubled over.
A sharp cry tore from her throat.
“ELLA—!” Raine caught her before she hit the ground, his power sparking white at the edges of his palms.
Ella clutched at the earth, her fingers digging into glowing soil.
The Vale flickered.
The mist recoiled.
The air vibrated with warning.
“Something’s pulling on me—” Ella gasped.
“No—someone—”
Raine’s grip tightened. “The Echo?”
“No—”
Ella’s eyes went wide—glowing again.
“It’s Kael.”
Raine froze.
“Kael?”
Ella nodded frantically.
“He’s still connected to me—through the binding. And the more my soul tries to stabilize, the more it drags him with it.”
Raine’s heart hammered painfully.
“Where is he?”
Ella lifted her trembling hand and pointed toward the ridge.
Raine turned—
And saw Kael’s body sprawled at the base of the slope, barely moving. Blood streaked the grass around him. His hand twitched weakly in the mist, trying to reach them.
“Kael—!” Raine shouted, sprinting toward him.
Ella stumbled after, the Vale’s light bending around her like a halo pulled too tight.
Raine slid to his knees beside Kael and lifted him carefully.
Kael’s eyes fluttered open.
Barely.
“R…Raine…”
His breath rattled.
“You made it… to the Vale.”
Raine swallowed hard. “You’re dying.”
Kael gave a shallow laugh.
“Not the first time someone’s said that today.”
Ella knelt on Kael’s other side, grasping his hand.
The glow inside her flared.
Kael gasped, arching slightly—pain mixing with relief.
“Ella… your soul… it’s— gods, it’s loud.”
Ella’s lips trembled.
“I’m sorry—Kael, I’m so sorry— I didn’t know it would hurt you—”
He squeezed her hand.
“You saved him,” he whispered. “I would gladly drown for that.”
Ella choked on a sob.
Raine’s eyes softened—but then widened as he felt something cold press against his spine.
He turned.
And froze.
The Vale’s barrier cracked.
A hairline fracture split the air, widening slowly like a wound.
A silver-black hand pushed through the shimmering gold.
Not fully.
But far enough.
Ella’s breath caught.
“No…”
Raine stood, shielding her and Kael.
The Second Echo’s voice slipped through the crack like poisoned silk.
Little Vessel.
Rewritten Boy.
Tethered One.
You stand together.
You were never meant to.
Ella trembled.
“What do you mean… ‘never meant to’?”
The Echo’s fingers curled around the crack’s edge.
Your souls were never written in the same chapter.
Not even in the same world.
Your destinies were separate.
Until someone—
Its gaze flickered toward Ella.
—rewrote the page.
Ella’s blood ran cold.
Raine stepped forward, fists glowing.
“Don’t listen to it—”
But the Echo continued.
Ella…
you were not supposed to meet him.
You were not supposed to save him.
You were not supposed to love him.
Your path was meant for someone else.
Ella’s breath trembled.
“Who?”
The Echo smiled with dead light.
The First Mirror.
The one you erased.
Raine’s pulse stopped.
Ella’s world tilted.
Kael whisper-fell into unconsciousness.
And the Vale screamed.
