Confusing Sensations

Confusing Sensations
A chill ran through her body as she sat there stunned for a moment, entranced by his eyes, his voice, his presence. And when his words finally settled into her head, she couldn't help the exceedingly intrigued expression that flashed across her face, making him blink in surprise.

"You're not fazed." He mumbled, more so to himself than to her, however, that had her coming out of her thoughts.

She chuckled, "why should I be?" She asked in an amused voice.

His gaze was frozen on her face for a moment, moving from her eyes to her nose, and then stopping on her lips.

Instinctively, she lightly licked her lips, opening her mouth to speak but then she could swear that she could hear the sound of his breathing hitch in his throat.

"I didn't catch your name." He mentioned, his gaze assessing her once again, almost as if he was trying to find something.

She smirked at that, "that's because I didn't give you one." She pointed out, meeting frost with her own flames.

He returned that smirk, his face slipping back into an amused facade as he nodded his head, "in that case, darling, can I have your name?" He asked again.

She still didn't drop the grin on her face, knowing that he was trying to test her. She clicked her tongue in disapproval, "you know, I used to listen to my mother telling me stories about how cunning the Fae are." She stated and the thrill in his eyes heightened, "how they use their words to trick mortals, how we should always be alert while speaking to a Fae."

He grinned widely, "and what did you learn then, darling?" He asked, tilting his head to the side.

"I won't give you my name because if I do then my identity would be lost." She told him sternly, "but, you can know my name, which is Valerie Anerva." She said, raising her chin as she looked at him with a fierce expression in her eyes.

She watched him licking his bottom lip and it almost made her want to taste them for herself before she controlled her raging thoughts.

"Impressive." He murmured in a lover's voice. "I never thought I would be this intrigued by a mortal." He admitted, "but, that's not what you are, are you?"

"No, I'm not a mortal." She said shaking her head, "I am the supposed Alpha of the Escalara pack."

"Selene's pack." He breathed and she nodded her head.

"But you are also someone's Luna." He said sharply, the expression on his face was a little darker than before but still filled with interest.

Valerie's eyes widened slightly, she wasn't sure how it was possible for him to know that information.

"How—"

"I can sense the bond on you." He cleared up. "But it isn't too strong, is it? Not as strong as it is supposed to be between mates." He added then, almost as if he was confused.

Valerie sighed, not wanting to talk about Draven, not when she was finally starting to divert her mind from him.

"No, it's not." She admitted. "Because he isn't my mate. The bond was a political decision."

That piece of information somehow seemed to please him immensely, though she wasn't quite sure why.

It was never difficult for her to get a read on someone's thoughts and emotions, however, in case of this man, she didn't know why but she was unable to figure anything out about him.

He was a mystery.

An enticing call from the dangers of death and Valerie felt like following it.

"Interesting." He mumbled and she furrowed her brows.

"Why?" She asked.

He smirked at that, but she did catch sight of something genuine in his eyes as he did so, "you will know." He answered.

Valerie furrowed her brows, looking at him with a questioning expression. "What do you mean—"

"Valerie!"

She turned around swiftly at the sound of her mother's voice and found Marianne making her way to her with a smile on her lips.

"Mom, hi, you're back." Valerie breathed, almost grateful that she wouldn't be stuck in another intense situation with the God of Death but she was also curious about what he had said.
