Chapter 29 Chapter 29
Violet
My eyes widened at those words and a second later, his brows furrowed as if he realized how his words had sounded as well.
I looked around but noticed that Tyler and Gavin had already scurried out of the waiting area, just like the other hospital staff.
And I was glad nobody had seen the way my cheeks had turned pink again.
I quickly looked away from Elijah who simply began walking towards the door again. I groaned, I didn’t have the strength to fight him.
So, I watched him push the door away and mumbled.
“Fine, do what you want. But when Cassie wakes up and asks me where her brother is, I am going to tell her that he went ahead to do exactly what he didn’t want you to do. That you don’t practice what you preach.”
My heart was hammering loudly. I had poked and prodded the bad wolf far too many times. But I was done playing nice.
Elijah hesitated for a second and painfully slowly turned to look at me. I waited for an angry scowl, for a retort or something similar but he simply gave me a long, hard look and then muttered.
“I’ll take a shower”
“Good”
I kept my expression carefully neutral until he turned back and walked out of the door. I knew asking him to just get bandaged and cleaned first would be pushing my luck too far.
His wolf, Beast, should be able to help him recover now that we were not in danger anymore.
Hence, I simply waited for the sound of his receding footsteps to fade.
And only then did I smile.
That was a victory, a small one.
My feet automatically turned to one of the chairs in the waiting area and I sat there for a while. Sleep and exhaustion soon tried to take over my brain and my eyelids started to grow heavy.
So, I propped my elbow up on the cold steel, handrest and dozed off.
Sometime later, I was woken up by a gentle nudge on my shoulder.
I groggily opened my eyes to see a nurse smiling at me.
“Sorry to wake you up, Cassie is asking for you.”
That line drove all the sleep away from my eyes.
“She is awake?” I scrambled up as the nurse nodded and then chased me as I hastily asked for the directions to Cassie’s room.
My feet slipped but I managed to grab the door that flew open to reveal Cassie sleeping on the hospital bed.
I straightened up and walked in slowly, taking in the sight of her wrapped up in bandages and tubes attached to her arm.
“Hey” I whispered softly and her eyelids fluttered open.
And her eyes were moist.
“Shh, don’t cry. You are fine. Everybody is fine.”
I gently patted her head, careful not to touch her injuries or the tubes.
Her voice was rough and labored.
“I…I dont know…how to face…my brother”
I grabbed a stool and sat on it while gently taking her hand in mine.
“You don’t worry about it. Just tell me how are you feeling?”
She gave me a wry smile and continued. “I…should have…listened to him.”
“Its okay. Its in the past now. Focus on relaxing and getting well.”
I tried to keep her from worrying but she just wouldn’t drop the subject.
“He warned me…but I didn’t listen.”
Why did these siblings have this weird habit of self-blaming at the worst possible time?
“Okay, you listen to me. Elijah was out there blaming himself for not keeping you safe and you are here doing the same. Tyler and Gavin are probably blaming themselves for not finding you sooner. So can you all just stop with the self blame?”
I huffed, directing my slightly angry gaze at her and that finally made her smile.
“Great….then I will…blame you.”
I grinned despite myself.
“Blame me all you want once you are fit enough to run. In fact, we can get in a cat fight if you want.”
The doctor walked in with a handful of reports and smiled at us.
“Oh glad it is you. Cassie is doing fine and with the medications she will recover in no time. You just have to be careful not to let her do any strenuous activity for a while.”
I asked a few questions about her health and recovery time which the doctor answered promptly that felt a bit weird to be honest.
I loved that he thought I was responsible enough but I wasn’t her guardian or family. I didn’t even belong to her pack.
So I paid attention to everything he said and nodded whenever he asked if I understood. At last, he gave me a smile, asked Cassie to rest and then left.
I couldn’t help but follow him outside the room and waited for a few seconds to be sure we were out of earshot.
“Doctor” I called him out as he was entering another patient’s room.
“Yes? Did I forget something?” He questioned.
“No, I just wanted to ask something.” I edged closer and dropped my voice low.
“Wouldn’t it be ideal if you told the alpha of his sister’s wellbeing. Or maybe the beta and gamma?”
The doctor adjusted his glasses and replied.
“Oh, but I thought it was perfectly alright to inform you based on the forms.”
I knit my brows.
“Forms? What forms?”
The doctor pulled up the thick stash of papers he was holding and pulled out a form and held it in front of me.
“That is Cassie’s form. We have to document everything and get the alpha’s approval. Look at his signature right there.”
I blinked and read through the small print, barely skimming through until my eyes landed on a familiar name.
Mine.
Under emergency contact my name was listed alongwith my number. And right below it was Elijah’s signature.
I looked up from the form to the doctor as he explained.
“The alpha approved of you as the emergency contact so I am well within my rights to keep you updated on the patient’s health. And I would rather you deal with him instead of me.”
Then the doctor lowered his voice as if he was saying something gossip worthy.
“Alpha Elijah will tear my head apart if I were the one to deliver the news that his sister still needs time to heal. And then the other patients will die. But he might spare you.”
I blinked at him as he pushed his glasses up his nose, gave me an awkward smile and went inside the room.
And I stood there for a few seconds, letting my head wrap around the fact that indeed, my name was written on the form.
Elijah trusted me to look after Cassie seeing that I had come to look for her uninvited.
Maybe he had planned to go after the rogue earlier. But he changed his decision after I called him out.
He had been nice to me, listened to me and I called him a hypocrite instead.
Shit!
