Chapter 30 Chapter 30
Violet
I slowly walked back to Cassie’s room. This time she was looking at me and asked straightaway.
“Where is Elijah?”
I shrugged.
“Not sure. He said he was going to shower so probably went home”
I couldn’t tell her what I had just learned. Not dump her with my guilt when she had been feeling guilty herself.
Her face fell and she looked to the side.
“He is angry with me, isn’t he?”
“He is tired so he probably fell asleep or something.”
But Cassie curled her fingers into her palm a little, looking anxious.
“I know he is angry with me for putting all of us in danger and just wont talk to me right now because I am already injured.”
I sighed.
“He runs a pack and a dozen different companies, right? He knows you are safe now at the hospital. Plus, knowing him, he must be trying to find out who those masked rogues were.”
She nodded but I could still see the sadness in her eyes. And when I sniffed myself, I realized I needed a shower as well.
So I decided to head home first and promised.
“I will visit later. Rest until then”
With that I decided to book a ride home but realized my phone battery had died. Tyler and Gavin weren’t around either when I stepped outside the hospital.
I had begun wondering what to do next when a car arrived and stopped in front of me. I stepped aside to give way to whoever had arrived but the driver seat window rolled down and the driver gave me a small bow.
“I am looking for Miss Violet Hayes. Is that you?”
I nodded.
“Oh, your phone wasn’t reachable. I have come to drop you home.”
“But I didn’t order a cab.” I looked at him warily, and he added.
“Alpha Elijah sent me to drop you home because you didnt bring your own car.”
He remembered that I had not brought a car and would need a ride home amidst all the chaos and worry about his sister?
That was a nice gesture from him and I felt even more guilty of my words casually thrown at him earlier.
And I felt the need to apologize to him first. In person.
So, I got in the car and said instead.
“Drive me to alpha Elijah’s residence.”
The drive was a short one, and I realized that I had been in the pack hospital. That I had entered a very personal space to him and didn’t even know until today morning.
I fished out for some deodorant and sprayed it all over myself before I stepped out. /My plan was simple, I was going to apologize for my words and then head home.
My parents were probably worried sick about me and would put me in curfew if I ever left home at night again.
But a few more minutes wouldnt hurt.
Thats what I told myself, as I headed towards his place and knocked on the door.
“Elijah! Its me!”
I shouted when nobody answered after a while.
I was about to scream again when the door opened to reveal a young woman inside.
“Alpha Elijah is in his office.” She answered and I looked at her up and down.
She wore simple clothes and looked around my age.
Before I could make any assumptions, she introduced herself.
“I am Ava, and I work here though alpha Elijah prefers to cook and clean by himself on most days except when Cassie or others are in the city.”
Ohh. The realization must be clear on my face because she asked.
“Are you a friend of Cassie? I am sorry, I havent seen you before.”
I nodded. “Yes, and I wish to meet with the alpha. Just five minutes.”
She opened the door wide and welcomed me inside.
“Sure, but you will have to check with him yourself. He is upstairs.”
Ava returned to her work while I ran upstairs to explore another part of his life. The last time I had just been in his room and done some very questionable things.
I nervously knocked on the door but there was no answer. But when I did place an ear on the door, I could hear other voices from the phone.
Realizing he was in some meeting, I thought of returning later but then I heard his voice.
“Who’s there?”
I hesitantly pushed the door open and peeked inside.
“I just wanted to talk.”
He mouthed. “I am busy for an hour. You can freshen up meanwhile fi you want. Ask Ava for anything you need.”
I nodded and closed the door.
Ava was in the kitchen, cutting vegetables and preparing food.
I debated whether I should head home first or not but the smell of warm food made my stomach rumble.
Ava noticed and smiled at me.
“Are you hungry? I can make some sandwiches for you.”
Nornamlly I wouldnt say yes rightaway but I needed to sleep, eat, bathe and relax all at the same time.
And I found myself incapable of saying no to food so I awkwardly replied.
“If its not too much trouble…”
She smiled and expertly began chopping fresh lettuce onions etc while I pulled up a nearby stool and began chatting with her.
“So you have been working here for how many years?”
“Five give or take. My mother used to work at the alpha residence first and then I took over.”
I grabbed an apple to munch because I was getting hungrier with every passing second.
“Oh, I didn’t know alpha Elijah was hundred years old because you definitely look my age.”
I attempted a joke but it fell flat because she was looking at me in surprise, not amusement.
I felt the need to elaborate.
“I mean, Elijah is like in his thirties so he couldn’t have started this pack long ago.”
She nodded. “Ohh yes, I meant my mom served alpha Elijah’s father and now I serve him.”
Elijah’s father…who might that be? I had not heard of any Lockwood alpha before, not someone famous.
There might have been one in a lesser known pack but no powerful alpha had that surname. Usually, alphas had a strong hierarchy and certain surnames spanned generations.
Elijah had just appeared out of the blue and made his mark over the years.
I wondered about it while she went down a trip memory lane.
“It was nice to see everybody live happily, but then things went downhill and then…”
