Chapter 28 Chapter 28
Violet
I was vaguely aware of Elijah stopping the car, limping outside and grabbing Cassie from my arms.
We all followed behind him as he burst through the hospital door shouting,
“Doctor! This is an emergency.”
It was almost three am by the time we reached so most of the staff were yawning but Elijah’s arrival shook them out of their sleep.
Elijah was covered in blood and put Cassie down on the nearest stretcher as the doctor came running towards him.
“What happened?” The doctor asked with widened eyes as he saw all the blood and reached for Elijah’s arm, thinking he was the one needing medical attention but Elijah grabbed the doctor by his collar.
“Treat her and ensure she gets well soon. If you cant do that, I’ll find a new pack doctor.”
The poor bloke nodded so hard I worried his head might fall off his neck.
“Nurses! Take her to the operation center immediately!” the doctor shouted and looked at Elijah’s leg that had a gaping wound.
Elijah’s brows furrowed and he was about to growl when the doctor rushed to the operation theatre.
Elijah finally let himself slump into the nearest seat in the waiting area and exhaled low. Tyler and Gavin rushed behind the doctor to complete the formalities while I just stood there, hovering by the door, unsure what to do next.
Only now did I truly see the extent of Elijah’s injuries under the lights of the hospital. He was covered in dirt and blood from head to toe.
I couldn’t even tell if the blood was his or Cassie’s. Slowly, I made my way towards him as he sat with his eyes closed, forehead resting on his arm.
He looked incredibly exhausted.
I had never seen him wearing anything except his patent black clothes and had barely glanced at all the muscle that disappeared beneath the fur when he shifted.
“You’re hurt” I said softly as I reached the seat beside him and sat down.
He didn’t respond but I could see why the doctor had glanced at his leg. The rogue leader had taken a sizeable chunk out of his leg.
The same leg he had pushed and shoved on the accelerator to get Cassie here and then carried her inside.
His wolf should have started healing him but the wounds still looked raw and bloody.
That is when I noticed something my eyes had missed out on earlier.
Something sharp and shiny was embedded in his skin.
‘Silver’ I realized with a start.
I wasn’t sure when exactly the rogue leader had pulled out silver to hurt Elijah but I could see tiny bits and pieces sticking out of his skin.
As if it hadn’t been a clean cut of a silver blade but something that burst into pieces and lodged itself inside his skin, slowing down the healing.
Silver used to be our kryptonite. It hampered the wolf’s ability to heal, reduced a wolf’s strength and was deadly to werewolves if not treated on time.
But with time most werewolves developed a strong immunity to it.
That only meant either the rogue leader had not developed an immunity yet so considered it a dangerous weapon or that he’d mixed something deadlier with the silver to cause maximum damage.
Like Wolfsbane or other herbs I was failing to recall the names of. Because I couldn’t think of any other reason he got injured.
I bit my lower lip nervously while staring at the gash and the blood oozing out of it.
In answer to my unspoken question, Elijah said. “Beast could either heal me or keep me awake enough to get us all here.”
Oh.
“Doesnt mean you should just let any possible infection spread.”
But Elijah wasn’t even paying attention to my words. Instead, he was staring straight ahead, as if he could see the face of the rogue leader on the wall and wanted to smash it.
“He escaped”
Elijah’s voice was strained. “And I let him”
“No, you saved Cassie. You did the right thing.”
However, Elijah wasn’t impressed.
“He was right in front of me, taunting me. One more second and I could have snapped his neck, given him the most painful death for what he did to Cassie. But I couldn’t even see that bastard’s face.”
Elijah leaned forward, his shoulders slouched but anger and displeasure coursing through him.
“Relax, Elijah. You saved Cassie and that is more important.”
But he got up from the seat in the next second and curled his hands into fists before starting to head towards the door.
“Where do you think you are going?”
I blocked his way, my hands on my hips.
“To finish off what he started.”
I stretched my hands wide on either side.
“No Alpha Elijah. You are not going anywhere. You are going to sit here, get yourself treated and get some sleep.”
His eyes narrowed as he looked down at me, gazing at me pointedly as if to show me that he could just blow air out of his mouth and make me fly away like a rag.
“And who is going to stop me? You?”
His eyes looked like orbs of fire and every inch of him screamed danger. But letting him go alone in this condition to fight off the rogues who might return with more numbers or weapons was not an option I would consider.
So I squared my shoulders and jutted my chin out, looking him in the eye and trying not to cower under his alpha gaze.
“Yes”
I croaked, faking bravado.
Tyler and Gavin returned to the waiting area to see our tense face-off and immediately stopped talking.
“Did the doctor say anything?” Elijah asked them and Tyler nodded.
“Apart from the fact that you scared the shit out of him? Yeah, he said Cassie is very injured but she is out of danger.”
Seeing that I was distracted, Elijah stepped aside and headed towards the door but I ran to block his path again.
“Are you out of your mind? Or did the loss of blood make you lose your brain cells?” I shouted and my voice echoed through the large waiting area.
The receptionist slowly lowered herself to sit on her chair and hide behind the desk while a nurse who had been heading to another room with a tray in hand froze.
Fear makes you do stupid things like talk back to a giant monster twice your size.
Elijah cocked an eyebrow and muttered in a firm voice,
“Get yourself cleaned and checked. I’ll be back before Cassie wakes up.”
But I shook my head vehemently and then looked for support.
“Tyler and Gavin, can you not try to talk him out of this? You do know what he is about to do, right?”
Tyler and Gavin exchanged glances and then threw me an accusatory look as if they hated to be dragged in this.
“They know better than that. And if you don't shut up, I’ll tie you up to one of the hospital beds.”
