The Final Measure of a Mate
The Final Measure of a Mate
CHAPTER 177: THE FINAL MEASURE OF A MATE
The Elders’ magic pulsed.
Alicia felt the verdict before it was announced.
BROOKE REMAINS
Brooke, sitting alone now, shoulders stiff, fingers interlocked tightly, stared at the floor.
Kael’s voice echoed inside him, deep, calm, ancient.
“Pain is temporary. Endurance is devotion.”
Brooke exhaled slowly.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t look at the window.
He didn’t touch the drink.
His pain was visible, tremors in his arms, sweat on his forehead, but he fought it.
Alicia’s breath caught.
She had never seen Brooke look so vulnerable… or so determined.
“He’s fighting for you,” Flo said gently.
Alicia clutched the veil.
“Brooke…”
And then the Elders’ voices boomed through the hall:
“The second trial is complete.
Max of the Moon Pack: defeated.
Yuri of the Northern Lineage: defeated.
Brooke of Crescent Hollow… remains.”
Max shouted somewhere outside, furious.
Yuri cursed softly under his breath.
But Brooke,
Brooke simply bowed his head.
He didn’t celebrate.
He didn’t smirk.
He didn’t move.
He whispered one thing.
“Alicia… I’m not giving up on you.”
THE COUNCIL’S VERDICT
Alicia felt the veil rip open again, pulling her back toward the Council Chamber.
She materialized slowly, still unseen, standing behind the Elders as they addressed the three males.
Elder Varyn’s voice was solemn.
“Max of Moon Pack. Yuri of Northern Lineage. The Goddess has tested your hearts, and in the moment of trial, you fell.”
Max clenched his fists. “We didn’t betray her!”
“No,” Elder Mira said softly. “But you allowed yourselves to waver.”
Yuri lowered his gaze. “I was weak.”
“And weakness,” Elder Tharos added, “is a danger to a Queen.”
Both males stiffened.
Brooke, silent, tense, kept glancing around, still searching for Alicia, unaware she was just behind the veil.
The Elders turned to him.
“And you, Brooke, son of the Crescent Hollow Alpha… You alone remain. But your final test will be the harshest.”
Brooke’s throat bobbed. “Name it.”
Elder Varyn’s eyes gleamed.
“The Trial of Wealth. Status. And Power.”
Brooke blinked. “What… does that mean?”
“It means,” Elder Mira said, “you must choose between becoming the richest, most influential Alpha of this age… or choosing Alicia.”
Brooke froze.
Max inhaled sharply. “That’s not fair...”
Yuri snarled. “You’re trying to break him!”
“No,” Varyn corrected. “We are determining whether his love is greater than ambition.”
The chamber fell silent.
Brooke’s voice trembled, not with fear, but with weight.
“I already know my answer. But if you want your trial… give it.”
The Elders nodded.
“Then prepare yourself. At dawn, the final trial begins.”
Alicia wanted to run to him.
To speak to him.
To warn him.
But the veil snapped shut before she could move.
Alone again in her invisible chamber, Alicia pressed her palms against the shimmering wall.
“Brooke…”
Flo stood beside her, tail flicking.
“One more test,” the wolf whispered.
“And then your future is chosen.”
Outside, in the Council Chamber, Brooke whispered into the quiet room:
“Alicia… I hope you’ll hear me. No crown, no wealth, no power means anything without you.”
Alicia closed her eyes.
And the veil dissolved into darkness.
The moon throbbed like a wounded heart over the citadel, its pale glow filtered through the trial chamber’s crystalline dome. Brooke stood alone in the center, bare-armed, breathing low and steady, Kael pacing like a black wildfire inside his mind.
Alicia…
Even now he felt her. A faint echo. Warmth threaded through heat. The bond, despite the Elders’ barriers, pulsed against his ribcage.
This was it.
The last trial.
The one that would decide whether he stood beside her, or walked away forever.
The High Elder stepped forward, cloak sweeping the marble.
“Brooke of the Silver Line. You have passed the first test. The second you outlasted with remarkable restraint.” His gaze darkened. “But this final measure is unlike any trial before. Three pillars: strength, loyalty, and truth.”
Brooke’s jaw tightened. “I accept.”
“You have no choice,” another Elder muttered.
The walls rippled.
And the world broke.
I. PHYSICAL TRIAL: “THE BEAST’S GAUNTLET”
The chamber rearranged itself into a vast arena of stone cliffs and swirling storm-winds. Brooke staggered as the ground shifted, unsure where reality ended and illusion began.
"Kael," he breathed internally. "Stay with me."
"Always," the wolf rumbled.
A shadow descended from above. A massive, horned beast, an ancient hybrid of wolf and nightmare. It landed with a cracking boom. Its breath steamed the air.
A voice echoed around Brooke:
“Kill it, Brooke. Kill it and claim the strength of ten Alphas. Kill it and you rise above all others.”
Brooke’s fists clenched.
They were tempting him with power.
The beast lunged. Brooke rolled, Kael surging into his veins, muscles burning as claws raked across his shoulder. Blood splattered the stone.
“Take its strength,” the Elders urged. “With it, you will be unstoppable. You will rule beside Alicia, or above her.”
Brooke froze.
Above her?
A spark of anger flared. The beast barreled forward. Brooke braced, then pivoted and struck with wolf-enhanced force, slamming its massive head into the ground.
He hovered over the creature, breath ragged, muscles trembling.
He could end it.
He could take the power.
He could become something terrifying.
But Alicia would never want a king forged from bloodlust.
Brooke stepped back.
“I don’t need power stolen from a dying beast,” he said. “My strength is enough, and my bond with her is stronger.”
The beast disintegrated.
Kael’s approval hummed like thunder.
II. POLITICAL TRIAL: “THE CORRUPTED THRONE”
The arena dissolved into a throne hall made of gold and shadow.
Brooke stood at the foot of a raised platform holding two thrones, one carved from moonstone, the other from jet-black obsidian.
Alicia appeared on the moonstone seat.
But her eyes were wrong, cold, emotionless, her beauty warped by a subtle cruelty.
An Elder stepped before him:
“Brooke, she will never choose you. Look at her. A queen must be practical. She needs an Alpha with ambition.”
Another voice joined:
“Max had leadership. Yuri had influence. You have neither. But you can.”
A parchment unfurled before him, floating in the air.
A decree.
Sign it, and Brooke would become High Consort by law, Alicia bound to him regardless of her heart. The kingdom would be his to command.
The obsidian throne pulsed with seductive promise.
Brooke stared at the document.
His throat closed.
This was the political temptation. Power wrapped in legal chains.
Alicia’s false image tilted her head. “You want me, Brooke. Take me. Take the throne. Should love matter more than glory?”
Kael growled in Brooke’s mind. "This is poison. Do not listen."
Brooke stepped closer, not to the obsidian throne, but to Alicia’s projection.
He lifted her chin gently.
