The Trial of Truth
The Trial of Truth
CHAPTER 176: THE TRIAL OF TRUTH
Yuri’s wolf whimpered.
His resolve shattered.
Not in lust,
but in need.
In fear.
In loneliness.
In the ache of waiting for Alicia too long.
A maiden whispered, “My lord… let me ease your longing.”
He didn’t touch her.
But he didn’t stand.
He didn’t walk away.
He didn’t resist enough.
He let her lean against his chest,
let her whisper comfort and
let her magic soothe him...
And that alone was enough.
Yuri failed.
Alicia sucked in a tight, broken breath.
Her heart hurt too much to speak.
THE LAST ONE STANDING
Only Brooke remained.
The window shifted focus, showing him standing alone on the edge of the square.
Every maiden avoided him instinctively, their magic sensing a boundary too strong to breach.
Brooke whispered into the wind, “Alicia… wherever you are… Kael and I are yours. Only yours.”
Alicia’s throat closed.
Tears filled her eyes.
Brooke had passed.
Barely touched.
Barely swayed.
The window began to close.
But the last thing she saw was the Council turning to him… studying him… whispering.
Preparing.
Flo whispered urgently, "The next trial will crush him."
Before Alicia could question, the window snapped shut.
She was alone again in the moonlit void, and a cold new voice echoed through the realm:
“THE FIRST FAILURES ARE RECORDED.
THE TRIAL OF TRUTH BEGINS NEXT.”
Alicia gasped.
“What does that mean? What trial..?”
But the voice only repeated:
“THE TRIAL OF TRUTH.”
And then the floor beneath her vanished.
The Council Chamber was silent when the verdict of the second trial was delivered.
Alicia, still unseen, still in the pocket-realm where her third trial of observation was taking place, felt the words like faint vibrations through the veil. She sat on a marble dais inside the invisible world the Elders had sealed her in, Flo pacing beside her in restless circles.
“They’ll feel betrayed,” Flo murmured.
“But truth is truth. They either withstand temptation… or fall before it.”
Alicia squeezed her hands together. She didn’t want to watch. But the Elders had forced her.
“A Luna must choose a mate with open eyes,” they had said.
So the veil stretched open again, like a silent curtain drawn by unseen fingers… and Alicia watched the outcome of the second trials.
THE FESTIVAL BELOW
The Moon Goddess’ Fertility Week had transformed the kingdom into a blaze of silver torches, songs, and intoxicating scents drifting through the night air. Omega maidens, dressed in shimmering white, symbolizing innocence and abundance, walked gracefully through ceremonial pathways lit by moon-crystals.
But beneath the celebration was the real purpose:
the males’ test of loyalty.
Magic, subtle but potent, hung in the atmosphere like golden mist, a spell designed to tempt, provoke, and entangle.
Brooke, Max, and Yuri sat inside the ceremonial guest lodge, waiting for Alicia’s return, each unaware that she was watching them through the veil.
The Elders had seated them together, drinks placed before them, wine enhanced with lunar incense meant to draw out desire and hidden impulses.
Max was the first to notice something was wrong.
“Why is the air so thick?” he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.
Yuri pinched the bridge of his nose. “Feels like someone dropped a furnace inside my spine. I can barely...”
He inhaled sharply as an omega maiden passed the open window.
Brooke stiffened, jaw tightening. “The festival’s started.”
Outside, drums throbbed like a heartbeat.
Inside, temptation bloomed like a living creature.
ALICIA WATCHES
In her invisible chamber, Alicia’s breathing tightened.
“They’re suffering,” she whispered.
Flo nuzzled her.
“All males suffer temptation. But only those who love you beyond instinct will endure.”
Alicia pressed a hand to the glowing veil.
“Show me.”
And it did.
MAX’S FALL
Max had always had the strongest physical reaction to Alicia, his wolf, Tawny, burned hot, emotional, reactive. And the moment the lunar incense seeped deeper into the room, Max’s pupils widened unnaturally.
“Why isn’t she back yet?” he muttered, pacing. “Why aren’t we told anything?”
Yuri grunted, fighting to stay composed. “Because it’s a trial, Max. Obviously.”
Max slammed his hand against a pillar. “I don’t care about their stupid trials. I need to see her.”
Brooke remained seated, brows drawn but steady. “Sit. Breathe. This will pass.”
But Max was unraveling. Tawny’s voice boomed through his mind, loud, demanding.
“Mate, mate, mate...find her...take her...claim..!”
“Shut up!” Max growled aloud.
Yuri flinched. “Pull yourself together..!”
But then the omega maidens passed again, singing in harmony, their scent hitting Max like lightning.
His body jerked.
He turned sharply toward the door.
“Max, no!” Brooke snapped.
“I’m not doing anything wrong!” Max shouted defensively. “I’m just... I just need air...”
He shoved the door open.
And the moment he stepped past the threshold, the magic struck him fully.
Alicia gasped as Max stumbled directly into the crowd of omega maidens. They swarmed around him, singing, touching his arms and shoulders in ceremonial greeting, and Max’s knees buckled as the spell overwhelmed him.
“No,” Alicia whispered. “Max, please...don’t..!”
But Max’s eyes glazed.
He didn’t harm anyone. He didn’t act on instinct.
But he let himself be held.
He let the maidens circle him.
He let their aura soothe him.
He did not fight.
And the Elders had made the rule clear. That in a trial of loyalty, yielding was failure.
YURI’S FALL
Yuri lasted longer.
He sat rigidly, forcing steady breaths through clenched teeth.
“Don’t look out the window,” Brooke told him.
“I’m not,” Yuri snapped.
“Good.”
The festival’s music grew louder, hypnotic, ancient, weaving its way into the room like invisible fingers.
Yuri’s wolf, a fierce silver entity named Arion, snarled inside his mind.
“You are strong. You do not bend.”
But the incense thickened, glowing faintly.
Yuri groaned, bending over, gripping the table.
“Brooke, I need... I need something to focus on.”
Brooke steadied him by the shoulders. “Think of Alicia. Think of her voice. Her scent.”
“I am,” Yuri whispered. “But she isn’t here. And they know I’ve waited years, Brooke. Years…”
His voice cracked.
Alicia’s heart twisted.
She saw Yuri drag himself away from Brooke’s grip, and slam back against the wall, pounding his head lightly as if to fight intrusive thoughts.
But then, the omega maidens approached the open window.
Their chants drifted inside.
Yuri inhaled, and froze.
His pupils dilated.
“No!” Alicia whispered. “Yuri...”
He turned toward the window, breath quickening.
A maiden placed a soft kiss on her fingertips and blew it toward him, just symbolic, just ceremonial.
But the spell seized his senses.
And Yuri’s wolf buckled.
He didn’t leave the lodge.
He didn’t touch anyone.
But he sank to his knees with a groan, whispering words that sealed his fate.
“I… can’t do this… I need her…”
