The Proclamation of the True Bond
The Proclamation of the True Bond
Chapter 178: The Proclamation of the True Bond
“You’re not her," Brooke demurred. "Alicia wants a partner, not a captor. And I’d burn every throne in this kingdom before I’d force her into anything.”
His fingers passed through the illusion.
The hall shattered like glass.
III. EMOTIONAL TRIAL: “THE LIES OF THE HEART”
The world reformed into something intimate, terrifyingly so.
A forest clearing under soft moonlight.
Alicia stood there, but different, vulnerable, trembling, eyes full of hurt.
“Alicia?” Brooke whispered.
She didn’t meet his gaze. “You shouldn’t love me, Brooke.”
His stomach hollowed.
This wasn't political pressure.
Not physical threat.
This was worse.
This was emotional manipulation, crafted to fracture him from the inside.
The illusion-Alicia stepped closer. “I break everything I touch. Max suffered for me. Diana lost her way for me. Yuri lost his chance for me. And you, Brooke, you’ll lose everything if you stay.”
Her voice cracked.
“Walk away. Save yourself. I’m not worth it.”
Brooke closed his eyes, fighting the burn in his chest.
The Elders’ voices reverberated around him:
“Let her go, Brooke. Free yourself. Choose peace, power, or safety. Anything but her.”
The illusion-Alicia touched his cheek.
Warm. Frighteningly real.
“Please,” she whispered, trembling. “Stop loving me.”
His breath shook.
Kael spoke gently in his mind. "Truth, Brooke. Speak the truth."
Brooke swallowed hard.
Then he looked into her eyes and said “No.”
The false Alicia’s eyes widened.
“You don’t get to decide my love for me. I choose you, even at my worst. Even when it hurts. Even if you break everything around us. I’ll still choose you.”
The illusions melted like shadows in sunlight.
The Elders’ chamber reformed.
Brooke was on his knees, chest heaving, skin slick with sweat and blood.
The High Elder approached him slowly.
“You refused strength.
You refused power.
And you refused to abandon her.”
Brooke lifted his head, trembling but unbroken.
“What does that mean?” he asked.
The Elder smiled faintly.
“It means, Brooke of the Silver Line...”
The doors slammed open.
Alicia stumbled in, eyes wide, breath harsh, Flo thrashing inside her mind.
She stared at Brooke.
He stared back.
Something unspoken passed between them.
The High Elder raised a hand.
“...that you have passed the final trial.”
A collective gasp rippled through the chamber.
But before Brooke could rise to his feet, before he could even touch Alicia, a deafening roar shook the dome.
A message...no, a warning...echoed through the minds of every wolf in the kingdom:
“THE LAST TRIAL HAS AWAKENED THE ONE WHO WATCHES.”
The torches blew out.
The moon turned blood-red.
Alicia gripped Brooke’s arm, hard.
“Brooke… tell me you didn’t unleash something.”
He whispered hoarsely, “Not me.”
Kael snarled in his mind.
"Something woke up because you passed."
And then, a voice none of them had heard in centuries whispered across the chamber:
“At last… the chosen mate stands revealed.”
Everything dimmed.
The moon hung low over the great citadel, swollen and silver-edged as if aware of the judgment it was about to witness. Torches flared along the marble courtyard where the ancient Watcher had summoned them, shadows dancing like restless spirits along the stone.
Alicia stood at the center, flanked by Max Junior and her council attendants. Her heartbeat was steady, astonishingly steady, considering the storm swirling inside her chest.
Flo whispered within her mind, warm and certain.
“This is the hour, Alicia. The hour you stop choosing and finally become chosen.”
Alicia swallowed, her gaze sliding toward Brooke.
He stood a few paces away, shoulders broad, Kael’s calm presence pulsing behind his eyes, hands loose at his sides, yet tense enough to betray nerves. He met Alicia’s gaze only once before looking down, as though the moment itself carried a gravity he wasn’t sure he could rise from.
Max and Yuri hovered behind him, close enough to watch, far enough to mark the beginning of their distance.
Diana stood on the opposite end of the courtyard, arms crossed, expression unreadable except for the slight twitch of Selena’s shadow behind her eyes. She had been forced to attend, “for truth,” the Watcher had said.
The Watcher himself stood before the gathered six, cloaked in runic silver. His wolf, an ancient, shimmering creature, manifested behind him like a ghost of starlight and primordial authority.
“Step forward, Queen Alicia of the True Heart.”
A hush settled.
Alicia moved, Brooke inhaled sharply, Max and Yuri tensed, and Diana’s lips pressed into a dangerous line.
The Watcher lifted his hand.
“Tonight, the trials are ended. The Heart’s choice stands ready. The kingdom awaits the name of its rightful Luna’smate, if a mate there is.”
Brooke trembled. Max stiffened. Yuri exhaled as if preparing to be gutted alive.
But the Watcher’s gaze turned, not to Alicia, but to Max and Yuri.
It cut through them like a divine blade.
“Before the Proclamation, truth must be spoken.
Max of the Moon Pack.
Yuri of the Celestial Wing.
Step forward.”
Max blanched. Yuri froze.
Alicia’s breath caught.
Brooke closed his eyes as if bracing for a strike.
Max Junior whispered, “Mom… you already know, don’t you?”
Alicia said nothing, but yes. She had watched it. She had witnessed it. She had felt the truth shake the Heart when it happened.
Max and Yuri stepped toward the Watcher in silence.
The Watcher’s voice dropped into something grave and ancient.
“During the Moon Goddess’ fertility week, under induced rut and overwhelming temptation, each of you fell.”
Max flinched.
Yuri looked away.
Brooke’s jaw tightened.
Alicia folded her arms, expression controlled but sharp.
The Watcher continued.
“Your failures in the second trial were not merely moral or romantic. They forged unintended consequences.
You each formed a bond, partial but binding, with an omega chosen by the Festival’s laws.
These bonds were not sought.
These bonds were not desired.
But they exist.”
A ripple of gasps moved through the courtyard.
Alicia’s heart clenched sharply, not from betrayal, but from inevitability. From truth. From the raw ache of what might have been.
She whispered, “Max… Yuri… you knew.”
Max swallowed. “I didn’t know until the morning after. The bond is faint, but it’s there. I felt it.”
Yuri’s voice cracked. “I thought it was just guilt. But when the omega reached for me yesterday… the bond pulled.”
Alicia closed her eyes.
Flo whispered again. “You cannot carry all hearts. Only the one that remains.”
Brooke turned toward Max, anger flashing.
“So you both, after everything...”
Max snapped, “It wasn’t voluntary!”
Yuri shot back, “We were drugged by the flares!”
Brooke growled low. “And you still failed.”
Max stepped forward. “Brooke...”
“Enough,” Alicia said softly.
Her voice silenced them instantly.
She looked at each man, Max with his shoulders slumped, Yuri with his eyes wet from shame, and Brooke, tense and still yet burning.
Then she turned to the Watcher.
“Say it plainly,” she said.
“Let the kingdom hear.”
The Watcher bowed his head.
“Max and Yuri’s hearts are no longer free.
Their paths are sealed, no longer contenders for your Luna bond.
Only one stands unbroken.
Only one stands loyal.
Only one stands ready.”
He turned.
Every head turned with him.
