Chapter 42 comforting him

Chapter 42 comforting him
Amelia’s P.O.V. (Continued)

I stood up hastily and ran towards the door.
“When did this happen? He was alright last night, and you said that he is improving. How did his condition deteriorate suddenly?” I yelled at the doctor in fear and anger while running.
Arthur and Hunter were behind me, but I didn’t care about anyone now.
I crashed into someone, stumbling on my feet badly, but Arthur caught me from behind.
“Yes, he was fine, Ms. Locke. He ate his breakfast well and didn’t complain about any pain or discomfort. He was watching TV when he suddenly started yelling in pain, calling for you all the time.” The doctor replied to me in a panicked tone.
“Put him to the call. I am coming but let him hear my voice.” I instructed him, walking ahead with Arthur’ help.
I didn’t know where I was walking or going. My vision was completely blurred but I had no tears in my eyes.
“Mom.” My heart lurched out of my mouth when I heard his painful cry.
“I am here, Xander. I am here with you, baby. Don’t cry.” I comforted him in a choked voice, feeling as if my whole world had crashed down at that very instant.
“I… am… scared, Mom. I…. I can’t see anything.” I stopped walking and almost fell to the ground when my knees wobbled badly because of fear.
“It…. It’s temporary, Ms. Locke. It’s because of the pain. He will be alright once the pain will lessen.” The doctor comforted me hurriedly, but it only made me roar angrily.
“Then what are you waiting for? Give him something to ease his pain.”
“Calm down, Amelia. Calm down. He is a strong pup. He will laugh in a few minutes. You will hear by yourself.” Arthur comforted me but continued dragging me somewhere.
I sobbed aloud, covering my mouth by other hand while tightening my grip on the phone.
“We have given him a painkiller, Ms. Locke, but we need to discuss something about his condition urgently.” The doctor spoke to me in the same tone, but the urgency was evident in his voice.
“I …. I will be there in twenty minutes, Doctor Harrison. Please don’t let anything happen to him.” I pleaded to him in a choked voice.
“Mom.” Xander cried again, making me sob too.
“You are a fighter, Xander. Fight with your pain, pup. We will be there soon. You are not alone and you can fight. You can win over your pain.” Arthur comforted Xander after taking the phone from me.
“Get in,” he instructed me with a grunt. I raised my hand to touch the car body.
“I am a fighter.” Xander whispered in a painful tone.
Arthur helped me get inside the car, and I crawled to the other side while Xander continued whispering about him being a fighter.
“Take this, and talk to him, Amelia. I am driving.” Arthur instructed me while putting the phone in my hand again.
“Xander.” I called him in a choked voice. I didn’t need to put the phone on my ear.
“Mom. It’s hurting so much.” Xander cried again.
“Where is it hurting, son? Tell Mom. You will be okay.” I asked him in a shaky voice.
“It’s hurting everywhere, Mom. My head is g… going to explode.” He replied while wailing.
“Stop crying first, son. Crying will make your pain worse. Listen to Mom and stop crying, okay?” I pleaded to him, keeping my eyes closed, trying to calm myself down so that I could help both Xander and the doctors.
“Okay,” he replied while sobbing a little.
“That’s like, my son. Now, j… just close your eyes and I am going to sing for you. The pain will go away soon.” I coaxed him while sniffing hard.
He grunted in pain a few times, but I started singing a lullaby that I learned from a mother of two in our group. I wasn’t good at singing before and after that incident, my voice became rougher than earlier.
Still, I love to sing for Xander. He hummed with me but grunted in pain a few more times.
I didn’t know at what speed Arthur drove the car, but he informed me soon that we had arrived.
I immediately wiped my eyes and blinked harder to clear my vision so that I could see.
I grunted angrily when I realized that my vision was still blurred.
Arthur held my hand and gently helped me get out of the car.
“You are agitated and you know what happens to you in this state. Don’t fight it. You need to stay calm for him.” Arthur comforted me while holding me into his side embrace, dragging me towards somewhere.
I trusted him with all my heart. So, I just walked, matching my pace with his.
“We are in the NICU right now. Please come there, Ms. Locke.” Doctor Harrison told me when Xander suddenly screamed in pain again.
“He… the call cut off abruptly, Arthur. Did something happen to him?” I asked Arthur in panic.
“Don’t think too much. Xander is a strong pup. He succeeded in pulling himself till now. I am sure that he will bounce back today too.” Arthur comforted me, but he was anxious too.
He was right. I can’t just think worse. I must think positive. Xander is a fighter like me. He will be okay. He must be okay.
It took us a few minutes before we reached the NICU.
“Ms. Locke.” I looked in the direction of the voice when we were about to reach the NICU.
“Please, come with me.” Dr. Harrison asked us hurriedly.
I held my breath in fear when I heard familiar footsteps behind me.
I looked at Arthur, who also went pale. We both looked behind us and saw Hunter coming towards us.
My heart skipped a beat before starting to beat rapidly.
I totally forgot that he was with us when I received the call.
“Damn it.” Arthur cursed under his breath, but it was too late to lie to him.
“Ms. Locke.” Dr. Harrison called me in a hurried tone.
Hunter jerked his head lightly, signaling us to go on while coming towards us.
“What should we do now?” Arthur asked me worriedly.
“What’s there to hide?” I asked him calmly and took a deep breath.
I moved towards Dr. Harrison again and we hurriedly walked towards the NICU.
He took us to the changing room first and gave us a kit of disposables to wear. Hunter also took a kit but didn’t ask me a thing.
“Xander is….. is my son, Mr. Stone.” I told him after deciding to give him a heads-up before entering the room where Xander was.
“You chose to give birth to him?” he asked me in a calm and indifferent tone, with no surprise or disdain in his voice.
“Yeah… he was the only blood relative of mine. How could I give up on him when he did nothing wrong despite being my son?” I replied to him truthfully.
"You are also innocent, Amelia. He is lucky to have you as his mother."
