Chapter 92
Evelyn turned around with some curiosity.
Mabel clutched the cards in her hand reluctantly: "I'm about to win, can you give me a bit more time?"
The way she looked...
Why did she look so much like a gambler?
What happened to that ethereal, otherworldly image?
This difference in her image was a bit too much, wasn't it?
Eugene seemed to laugh in exasperation: "The daughter of the Simpson family, and you care about this little bit of money?"
"That's true."
Eugene continued: "The Simpson family doesn't give you much money, but the assets the Martinez family gave you are definitely substantial enough to show they value you. How about this - I'll transfer the assets the Martinez family gave you directly into your account, and you won't need to rush into gambling."
"Pour wine for Mr. Martinez." Samuel kicked Benjamin's bodyguard and said coolly.
Evelyn: "..."
Had Samuel gone crazy with anger?
"Ugly and delusional. Can't afford a mirror? Use the wine to take a look at yourself. With that face of yours, you think you can get a wife?"
Had Samuel's mouth been dipped in poison?
Eugene did have a scar on his brow bone, but to be fair, it didn't affect his handsomeness at all.
Instead, it added a roguish charm to him - the classic "bad boy" type that women couldn't resist.
"Ugly," Eugene wasn't angry. He raised his hand to touch the scar on his brow bone. "Which law says that ugly people can't collect debts?"
Then Eugene suddenly smiled, and the air seemed to turn cold.
"Oh, right, people like us don't really need laws anyway."
"Just now I gave Mr. White face and arranged for people to settle things at the gambling table."
"Now, Mr. Harris comes and wants to overturn what we just agreed on. So everything we just said was for nothing?"
"Really not giving me face. With so many people watching, fine, we don't have to gamble. Thirty million dollars for emotional distress."
Everyone present looked at Eugene in shock.
Especially Evelyn - did he just pull that number out of thin air?
Benjamin noticed her staring at Eugene, and displeasure flashed in his eyes.
He raised his hand to pull Evelyn into his arms: "This has nothing to do with us anymore."
"How does it have nothing to do with you?" Eugene interjected. "We just agreed on something, and Mr. Harris came and overturned it. Even if you don't care about face, I still need my thirty million dollars for emotional distress."
After a pause, the smile on his face deepened.
"Come to think of it, you two are good friends. You had my people gamble with Mr. Harris's woman, and the stakes were Mr. Harris's woman..."
Eugene didn't finish his sentence, but the implication was loaded with provocation.
Eugene had first tried to drive a wedge between Benjamin and Evelyn, and now he'd shifted to Benjamin and Samuel.
Did Benjamin and Eugene have some deep grudge?
Was it because the Martinez family had previously schemed against her, and Benjamin's retaliation had triggered Eugene's counterattack?
Evelyn was still pondering this possibility when Samuel's cold, mocking voice rang out.
"She's not my woman."
"Really?" Eugene asked emotionlessly. "Then what does it have to do with Mr. Harris whether she goes to the gambling table or not?"
He pulled his lips into a smile and leaned back on the sofa, looking at Mabel.
"The man you've set your sights on isn't interested in you. Why not come into my arms instead?"
"A marriage alliance between our two families would be proper and legitimate, and I guarantee no other woman could threaten your position as Mrs. Martinez."
He looked at Benjamin and Samuel with interest.
"Their family backgrounds are indeed better than the Martinez family's, but they also have many more constraints."
"If you're with either of them, you'll have to consider many things."
"But if you're with me, all you need to do is be Mrs. Martinez."
How did this turn into a heartfelt confession?
Especially Evelyn - she felt the atmosphere was weird. Was Eugene really just trying to provoke someone?
Could Eugene be hiding his true feelings in there?
Could it be...
Her gaze moved back and forth between Eugene and Mabel. She really didn't know if there was any connection between them.
Benjamin pressed her head against his chest. His voice wasn't loud, but it was enough for everyone in the room to hear.
"Their business has nothing to do with us. Let's go back and continue watching the movie."
They'd only watched half of the horror film.
She definitely wouldn't dare watch the rest of the horror film alone. She still needed to hold onto Benjamin to feel safe.
She immediately nodded: "Then let's go."
Anyway, both Celeste and Mabel had all kinds of connections with Samuel. It was more proper for him to handle this than Benjamin.
Even though she understood Benjamin's feelings for her, when she thought about how some people in the Harris family wanted to change Benjamin's fiancée and had pushed Celeste toward Benjamin, she felt a bit uncomfortable.
"Want to leave? Leave seventy million dollars behind." Samuel suddenly smiled.
Evelyn was stunned. When did Samuel switch sides?
Evelyn met Samuel's half-smiling face and clearly felt the coldness emanating from him.
"Fifteen million dollars is Celeste's compensation to Mr. Martinez, and sixty million is for emotional distress."
"After all, I can't currently pay such a large sum, so it's only right that you compensate me on my behalf."
Samuel's matter-of-fact tone made it seem like Samuel wasn't Benjamin's friend, but Benjamin's father!
Evelyn blinked, a bit curious: "Then why is the emotional distress fee so high?"
"Thirty-five million dollars is for Mr. Martinez, and thirty million is what Mr. Martinez is asking for on Benjamin's behalf. We should thank Mr. Martinez."
So in the end, Benjamin was paying all this money for his own emotional distress?
"But thirty million dollars is nothing to Benjamin anyway, so just give it to me."
While Evelyn was still in shock, Benjamin had already carried her out. His voice was very cold.
"Handle the rest yourself."
As he spoke, he gave the bodyguards a look, telling them to stay and assist Samuel, then left with Evelyn.
Behind Benjamin, Samuel's somewhat unserious voice rang out again.
"When you called earlier, you didn't explain clearly what was going on. You just told me to arrange a medical team."
"You went to such great lengths, I thought something had happened to Ms. Thomas. Turns out it was for Celeste."
"Looks like Celeste holds quite a place in your heart, too."
The words were directed at Benjamin, but meant for Evelyn to hear.
When there are no feelings involved, you can make the most rational analysis and judgment about anything.
But once emotions are involved, that's another story.
Now Evelyn felt a headache just hearing Celeste's name, her heart full of frustration.
Getting in the car, she didn't want to deal with Benjamin and just said one sentence.
"Take me to the mall. I need to buy something."
"Weren't we going back to watch the movie?" He glanced at her while fastening his seatbelt, his voice as steady as ever. "What do you need to buy? I'll have someone get it."
"Personal items. Not convenient for others to buy."
This was just an excuse off the top of her head. How would she know what to buy?
She just wanted to go out for a walk and not look at Benjamin's annoying face!
"Then I'll go with you."
"No!"
Her tone was so obviously annoyed that even if he were stupid, he'd realize she was unhappy.
Benjamin's eyebrows raised slightly. He went through everything in his mind, and then the corners of his lips couldn't help but curve up.
Evelyn was jealous.
