Chapter 335. Save My Baby
Chapter 335. Save My Baby
“Helena.” Tears were still falling from Ellie’s eyes without stopping. “I know everything now. I’m sorry… I’m really sorry…”
Ellie slowly reached out and placed her hand over the back of Helena’s bandaged hand. Helena lowered her eyes, hiding the way they were gradually turning red.
Should she blame Ellie?
It was true that all the tragedies she had gone through had begun after she met Ellie and Galvin. But in truth, neither of them had ever done anything to harm her.
Everything that happened had been caused by Andrea. Or perhaps this suffering had already been waiting for her somewhere in her fate, and there had been no way for her to escape it.
Helena turned her hand over and gently held Ellie’s hand in return.
“None of this was your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Hearing Helena say that only made Ellie feel even more guilty. She lowered her head and held Helena’s hand between both of hers. Her tears fell onto the white bandages wrapped around Helena’s hand, leaving small wet marks behind.
“I’ll make sure you receive treatment.” Ellie spoke through her tears, her voice trembling badly. “No matter how many doctors we need, no matter how much money it takes, or what medicine has to be found, Galvin and I will get it for you. You will get better. You have to get better.”
She tightened her hands around Helena’s, but she was careful not to hurt her wounds.
“We’ll also help your father and your brother get justice. We won’t let the people who hurt your family walk away without paying for what they did. We’ll give back everything that belongs to you. Everything that was taken from you, we’ll help you take it all back.”
Helena heard her, but she did not show much of a reaction. She only lowered her eyes toward her stomach.
“Thank you, Ellie. But if I had a choice, I would rather die myself if it meant my baby could live.”
Helena turned to look at her. Her eyes were full of tears, and the pleading in them was something no one could easily refuse.
“Ellie… can you save my baby?”
Helena’s breathing began to grow uneven and confused. She wrapped both hands tightly around her stomach, as though she could already feel the baby slowly leaving her.
“The doctor said the baby is still alive. As long as the baby is still alive, there must be some way to save it, right?”
Helena tried to push herself up from the bed, but the wounds all over her body sent such sharp pain through her that her face immediately turned white.
The monitor beside the bed suddenly gave a warning sound. Ellie quickly reached out and held Helena by the shoulders.
“Don’t move.”
“Save my baby…”
Helena grabbed Ellie’s hand. She was already very weak, but at that moment, her fingers tightened so hard that Ellie could feel the pain in her hand.
“I’m begging you.”
Seeing Helena like this made Ellie completely break down. She bent down and wrapped her arms around Helena, then burst into loud sobs, no longer able to keep herself calm.
Ellie’s crying filled the hospital room. Every sound was full of helplessness and pain.
She understood the baby’s condition. The doctor had already said that the chance of keeping the child alive was almost zero. Even though there was still a fetal heartbeat, it could stop at any moment.
Ellie wanted so badly to promise Helena that they would definitely save her baby. She wanted to tell her that everything would be fine, that the child would survive, and that Helena would still be able to hold the baby in her arms one day.
But Ellie could not bring herself to do it.
She could not use a lie to give Helena hope, only to destroy that hope with her own hands and hurt her all over again.
Held in Ellie’s arms, Helena gradually stopped struggling, but what followed was an even deeper sense of helplessness. She already knew what the result would probably be, didn’t she? Why was she still asking Ellie to do something that Ellie might never be able to do?
Galvin stood outside the hospital room. Through the small glass window in the door, he watched the two women holding each other and crying, and a dull pain slowly spread through his chest.
He turned his face away and coughed softly, covering his mouth with one hand. When he lowered it, there was a small trace of blood in his palm.
Alex quickly stepped forward and supported him. “Boss, do you need to get checked? You look terrible.”
But Galvin shook his head. More than anyone else, he understood his own condition clearly. Perhaps he was no different from Helena’s baby. His chance of surviving was almost zero.
That was why, before he died, he needed to clear away every obstacle in Ellie’s path. He needed to make sure that even after he was gone, she could still live a safe and happy life without anyone hurting her again.
Inside the hospital room, Ellie spoke through her sobs.
“I’ve already contacted the best specialists I could find. Tomorrow, two more doctors from overseas will come to examine you and the baby. As long as the baby’s heartbeat is still there, we won’t give up on this poor child.”
Helena became a little calmer. She lowered her head and looked at her stomach while her tears fell one by one onto the blanket covering her body.
Ellie wiped the tears from her own face, then held Helena’s hand tightly between both of hers.
“Even if there is only the smallest bit of hope left, I’ll stay beside you. You can’t let yourself fall apart while there is still a chance. Your baby is depending on you to stay alive.”
Ellie knew she had to give Helena hope. If even the mother gave up, then the baby would have even less of a chance. More importantly, if the baby truly could not be saved, Helena might lose the will to keep living as well.
Ellie could not allow that to happen.
From that day on, she spent almost all of her time at the hospital.
Galvin also remained in the hospital so the doctors could continue watching his condition. There was less than a month left before his second surgery. During this period, helping his body build up its resistance was one of the most important parts of his treatment, and nothing could be taken lightly.
Lucas took care of Ansel. The little boy called his parents every day and kept asking when they would come home. Ellie only told him that she was taking care of a friend who was sick. She did not want a child to see or hear about things that were far too frightening for him.
