Chapter 336. A Fragile Hope

Chapter 336. A Fragile Hope
Over the next several days, Helena’s condition was still unstable. At night, she often woke with a start. Whenever a man raised his voice out in the hallway, her body immediately curled up. Sometimes she pulled the blanket over her entire body and begged in panic for no one to touch her.

Ellie always stayed beside Helena and kept her company. At the same time, Galvin’s men stood guard outside the room, making sure no one except the people they allowed could enter.

The doctors checked the baby’s heartbeat several times every day. Each time the faint sound came through the machine, Helena was finally able to breathe again. She would stare at the screen for a very long time, as though the heartbeat might disappear the moment she looked away.

Ellie sat beside her and listened too. Every small sound from the machine filled her with hope, but it also made her afraid. No one knew whether they would still be able to hear that heartbeat during the next examination.

During that time, Galvin dealt with the matters involving the Miller family. The evidence showing that Andrea had forged the documents was handed over to the police. The unusual transactions, the middlemen involved, and the people who had once come forward to make false accusations against the Miller company were all investigated one after another.

Richard’s case was quickly reviewed again. After it was proven that several important documents had been forged by someone else, most of the charges against him were cleared. The false information that had been spread about the Miller company was also corrected in public. Although the company could not return to the way it had been right away, at least the family’s name had finally been cleared.

Helena’s father had also made it through the most dangerous stage. After Richard finished all the required procedures, he went to the hospital to visit him.

Galvin did not allow Richard to see Helena immediately. Her mental state was still far too weak, and too many people appearing around her at once could easily frighten her again.

However, he let Ellie tell Helena the news herself.

That afternoon, Helena had just woken up from a short sleep. Ellie sat beside the bed and gently combed through Helena’s messy hair, carefully smoothing it back for her.

“Your father is out of danger now.”

Helena froze for a moment, as though she was not sure she had heard correctly.

“Really?”

“Really.”

Ellie smiled at her, even though her eyes were still red from crying. “The doctor said his condition is stable now. Richard has also been cleared of the most serious charges.”

Tears immediately ran down Helena’s face.

Everything that had happened to the Miller family had felt like a huge stone pressing down on her body, so heavy that she could hardly breathe. Even while lying in the hospital, she had not been able to stop thinking about her father, her brother, and the company. Now, at last, that stone had been lifted a little, giving her a small chance to breathe again.

Ellie reached out and held her hand tightly.

“Things will get better. Once you recover, you can decide for yourself what you want to do next. No one will force you anymore, and no one will take that choice away from you.”

Helena smiled, her eyes filling with tears. It was the first time she had smiled since the terrible nightmare in the warehouse.

Ellie stayed and talked with her for a while before going to Galvin’s hospital room.

When she arrived, she saw that Galvin had already changed into his usual clothes and looked as though he was getting ready to go somewhere.

Ellie looked at his pale face and asked worriedly, “Where are you going?”

“To see Kevin.”

Hearing that, Ellie’s expression became a little heavier. She remembered the miserable state Kevin had been in when he was carried out of Galvin’s villa, so she asked, “How is Kevin now?”

“He’s still alive.” There was no emotion in Galvin’s voice. “But I think right now, he wants to die more than anyone else does.”

Ellie fell silent. She did not know whether she should feel sorry for Kevin or hate him.

The video had made her understand everything Helena had suffered because of Andrea. But before that happened, Kevin had also caused Helena far too much pain. No matter how much he regretted it now, his regret could not change anything that had already happened in the past.

“Why are you going to see him? Do you want him to meet Helena?”

Galvin gently stroked Ellie’s hair and gave her a small smile to calm her down.

“Don’t worry. I won’t let him have any contact with Helena.”

Galvin lowered his head and kissed her forehead before leaving the hospital.

The car took him to the Thorne family’s private residence. After Kevin had been taken home by his family, the doctors had managed to save his life.

The stroke had not left him completely paralyzed, but one side of his body was still very weak. He still could not walk normally on his own, and his voice remained hoarse and unclear, nothing like it had been before.

Kevin’s hair had turned completely white, making him look as though his life had been worn away in only a few short moments. His father and mother believed Galvin must have done something to him. They wanted to go and confront Galvin, demanding an explanation and justice for their son. But Kevin had immediately slammed his head against the side of the bed, hard enough to frighten everyone in the room. After that, neither of them dared to do anything that went against his wishes again.

The atmosphere inside the house had become unbearably tense. It felt so heavy that even breathing seemed difficult. No one dared to say anything that might upset Kevin or cause him to lose control again.

Ever since he woke up, Kevin had barely eaten or drunk anything. Every day, he asked where Helena was and demanded to know what had happened to her. But no one in the Thorne family knew which hospital she had been taken to.

Galvin had blocked every piece of news about Helena. Even when the Thorne family used all their connections and sent people to investigate, they still could not find any useful information. Kevin could do nothing except remain inside the large bedroom, lying on the bed and staring toward the door again and again, waiting for someone to come in with news of her.

When the butler entered and told him that Galvin had arrived, Kevin immediately pushed against the mattress with both hands and tried to sit up. But his body was still too weak after the stroke. His arms gave way, and he fell heavily back onto the bed.

A servant hurried over and tried to support him, but Kevin shoved the man’s hand aside. He forced himself to get out of bed, dragging his weak leg and taking one painful, unsteady step after another.
