Chapter 334: Helena Awakens
She wiped away her tears with one hand and tried to stand up, but her legs had gone stiff and numb from sitting in the same position for too long. Her body swayed several times before she suddenly pitched forward.
Galvin quickly caught her. Worry was clear in his voice. “Don’t rush like this. The doctor said you can’t let yourself get too worked up.”
After saying that, Galvin let out a long sigh. “All right. I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Once he had agreed, Galvin carried her back into the villa. He called someone over to look after Ansel, changed out of the clothes that had already been stained with blood, and then immediately took Ellie to the hospital.
Ellie did not say a single word during the entire drive. She sat close beside Galvin, their hands tightly clasped together, neither one of them letting go.
She only stared out through the car window. The buildings and the rows of streetlights kept sliding backward one after another, but in her eyes they were nothing more than blurred patches of light and color through the tears that still would not stop.
Galvin held her hand more firmly. He could feel how cold Ellie’s palm was against his skin. He covered it with both of his hands, trying to pass even a little warmth into her frozen fingers.
“Andrea has made too many people suffer. This time, I’ll make sure he pays for all of it.”
Ellie tightened her fingers around Galvin’s hand. She did not ask what he planned to do, nor did she try to stop him.
For the first time in her life, Ellie also felt that there was someone who did not deserve to be forgiven.
If Andrea had only hurt her, perhaps she still might have softened in the end. Perhaps she might have remembered the years they had spent growing up together and found some small reason to show him mercy.
But he had done those things to Helena. He had let her be tortured and humiliated, and he had even wanted to kill a baby that had not yet been born.
Ellie could not forgive Andrea anymore, even though the two of them had grown up side by side.
The car quickly arrived at the hospital. The moment Galvin stepped out of the car, Alex immediately hurried over to him.
“Boss.”
“How is Helena?”
“She just woke up, but the doctor said her mental condition is very unstable right now. Ever since she regained consciousness, she has been panicking again and again. She refuses to let anyone come close to her. The nurses had to spend a very long time trying to calm her down before she finally became a little quieter.”
Galvin looked down the hallway in front of him.
“Did she say anything?”
“She only asked about the baby.” Alex paused for a brief second before he continued speaking. “The doctor didn’t dare tell her the truth about the baby’s current condition. They’re afraid she won’t be able to take it if she finds out.”
When Ellie heard those words, all the color drained from her face again. She grabbed tightly onto Galvin’s arm, using his strength to keep herself from falling to the floor.
Galvin reached out and supported her around the waist, then asked, “Can we go inside and see her now?”
“The doctor said it would be better to let only one person go in first.” Alex looked at Galvin as he spoke. “Maybe it would be better if Ms. Ellie went inside.”
Galvin understood that as well. After everything that had happened in the warehouse, the appearance of a man could easily frighten Helena, upset her, and send her into another state of panic.
He turned toward Ellie and said quietly, “I’ll wait for you outside the door.”
Ellie gave him a small nod. After that, a nurse led the two of them toward the intensive care unit.
Several nurses were already standing outside the room, waiting for them. A female doctor walked over and spoke quietly, explaining Helena’s condition to them in a lowered voice.
“She has been awake for a little more than half an hour. Her vital signs are stable for the time being, but her body is still very weak. The thing we are most worried about right now is her mental state. She won’t allow anyone else to touch her. Even if there is only a slightly loud sound, she immediately begins trembling. We gave her a very small amount of sedative, but we don’t dare use too much because the baby’s condition is also not very stable at the moment.”
Ellie listened to every word, and the pain in her heart only grew worse. After the doctor gave her permission, she pushed the door open and walked inside.
The hospital room was very quiet, and the strong smell of disinfectant filled the air. The curtains had been drawn closed, leaving only a little weak light coming through.
Helena lay on the bed, her body almost completely covered in layers of white bandages. There was gauze wrapped around her forehead, and one side of her face was still badly swollen, marked by a frightening blue and purple bruise.
But what hurt Ellie the most was the way Helena’s hands were still holding tightly over her stomach. Even with an IV in her arm, even though that arm seemed to have almost no strength left, she still refused to let go. It was as though the moment she moved her hands away, someone would immediately come and take her baby from her.
Helena stared up at the ceiling with her eyes opened very wide. There was no clear awareness in those eyes. There was only fear, the same fear that still had not faded away.
The moment she heard the door opening, her body immediately curled in on itself. Her breathing became fast and uneven, and her fingers gripped the blanket over her stomach with even more force.
“Don’t…”
Helena’s voice was extremely hoarse. “Don’t come over here…”
Ellie stopped at once. Tears rushed into her eyes, but she tried hard not to let herself cry out loud.
“Helena.”
When Helena heard her voice, her eyes slowly turned in that direction.
She stared at Ellie for a long time. It seemed to take her quite a while before she finally recognized the person standing in front of her.
“Ellie…”
“It’s me.”
Ellie slowly walked closer to Helena’s hospital bed. Helena’s eyes moved over Ellie, but then she immediately noticed Galvin standing near the door behind her.
Her entire body went stiff at once, and the hands protecting her stomach pressed down even more tightly.
Galvin noticed the fear in Helena’s eyes, so he stepped back and closed the door to the room. Only then did Helena let out a small breath of relief before slowly turning back toward Ellie.
Perhaps she still remembered that Galvin had been the one who saved her from the warehouse.
Ellie sat down on the chair beside the hospital bed.
