Chapter 175 One Eye Closed

Chapter 175 One Eye Closed
Maureen's POV

'We should choose the ground for the war not them,' the General of the High Moon army said as we all sat in the pack's conference hall for a meeting.

It was three days after their imposed and fake president declared war on High Moon. We had to let the High Moon soldiers in on our plans since the war was declared on the pack they were meant to protect.

Every member of the golden wolf team was present at the meeting. Dad and the Alpha were also there. The two generals of the High Moon army were there as well with some of their high-ranking soldiers.

'How do you think we should go about that general?' I asked him not because I didn't know what he was talking about but I wanted him and the others to know that contributions are important as well.

'We need to move the fight away from High Moon. Give the spot of the fight and High Moon a reasonable distance,' the general explained.

'Where do you suggest we stay to welcome them?' I asked sarcastically.

The general nodded at one of his subordinates, who quickly rushed to the front from his seat to address everyone.

He pressed a button on the side of the PowerPoint displayer and it came up to show a map. It was the map of High Moon.

'This is the map of High Moon,' the subordinate began, 'They can't possibly come into High Moon except through these two routes because High Moon is surrounded by other packs, and being the cowards they are, they will not want to alert us by coming in through another pack,' the subordinate explained.

'Are you saying we have to divide the soldiers into two to wait for them in these places?' I asked.

'No, Your Majesty. They can't come through here because it will not be favorable for houses. There are a lot of thorny plants in this area,' the subordinate said pointing at one of the two places. 'Meanwhile, this is the only favorable road for whatever animals they will be bringing with them. Just before the road is an unclaimed land before they enter High Moon. We are proposing that we make this place our point,' he explained.

I exchanged glances with the Alpha. That was the exact place we met with Alan and the rogues he was bringing to attack High Moon when he had been brainwashed into it.

'Thank you general.' I said nodding at the subordinate indicating that he could go back to his seat. ' One other precaution I want to take is that there should be soldiers at the borders of High Moon to prevent anyone sneaking in without our notice,' I added.

'We don't have so many soldiers to take to war if we station too many soldiers at the border,' the general replied frowning.

'I told you that I have my army, general. Let High Moon soldiers take care of High Moon mostly. The rest can join us in the battle,' I said reassuringly.

'Will the few numbers of High Moon soldiers and your army be enough to fight them?' The other general asked.

'I will not tell you what is not possible general. Be rest assured that we are winning this. It is not my first time dealing with these people,' I said looking at him in the eyes. Just like every other person who had tried to hold my gaze recently, he averted his eyes.

'I trust you completely Your Majesty,' the general said.

'These people made soldiers. Their soldiers don't die irrespective of how many times you cut or slash them into two,' I said and all the High Moon soldiers looked confused.

'How is that possible?' A general asked.

'Science. That is how they made it possible. Gene manipulation and doctoring but we need not be scared if and when any of us encounter them during the battle. We will get rid of them just like always,' I said smugly.

'How are we going to get rid of them Your Majesty?' A High Moon soldier asked.

'Don't worry yourself about that we have got it covered,' I said then moved to other topics.

We deliberated some more before we brought the meeting to an end. The generals left with their subordinates and left Dad, the Alpha, and the golden wolf team in the room.

'My eye in the council said that those you delivered to the council after the rescue are already finding it difficult. Some of the girls are also missing. He hasn't seen the doctors for days either,' the Alpha said.

'What of Talon?' I asked l.

'According to him, Talon is confined to a bed. They don't know if he is feigning it or not but he is unwell,' the Alpha said through gritted teeth. I knew his hatred for Talon must run deep for what he made the Luna go through.

I closed my eyes as the possibility of what they were going through hit me hard. They were rescued so that they could be safe but I accidentally delivered them directly into the hands of those who took them at first.

'What of Talon's breeders?' I asked.

'One of them went into labor two days ago and since then my inside person hasn't seen either the breeders or the kids.'

'It is for just a while yet. They should persevere. It will all soon be over,' I said with optimism.

'It was a good thing we brought Dawn's mother with us,' Asher mumbled under his breath but we all heard him.

Dawn and her mother were gradually warming up to each other. Her mother had insisted that she needed something to do and the Alpha had offered her the job of a cook for the golden wolf soldiers which she took happily.

'It was a wise decision, Asher,' I said and stood up from the chair to go out of the room.

It was as if I was operating on an excess energy since war was declared on High Moon. I wanted the day to come already. I couldn't wait to remove the fake golden wolf from the Citadel.

Alphas of neighboring packs were trying to play safe by staying away from High Moon for the time being, just in case High Moon lost.

The entire wolf kingdom was divided. Some were even protesting against the crowned golden wolf. They insisted that the golden wolf at High Moon was the real golden wolf. In solidarity, some females tinted their hair gold. Besides the new president's statement where he called me a mere female had infuriated the female populace.

From what we have gathered, the Luna of Rolling Hills and her mate are walking freely in the council. The former president was also no longer in prison because according to them, the golden wolf pardoned them.

It was annoying how they thought they could control the kingdom with the help of their fake wolf. I just couldn't wait for the day to come so that I could show the traitors what a mere female is capable of.

Ian's POV

I left the meeting the instant it was over. I wasn't feeling comfortable anymore in the meeting and I didn't know why but I had to endure till the meeting was over.

I had made myself invisible so that no one would stop me from leaving. Lance had raised a questioning brow when he saw that I was leaving. I had only gestured at him that I had to leave.

I walked into the house still in my invisible form and went straight to the room I shared with Shanty. I opened the door quietly and entered all in a bid to surprise her but I got the surprise of my life instead.

The room was scattered and Shanty was under the bed searching for something. I looked at the room in total disarray with a frown. I waited for her to come out from under the bed.

'Where the hell could it be?' she said in frustration.

I at that point materialized and she jumped in fright with her eyes wide with surprise. She placed a hand on her chest, she was breathing so hard that I didn't have to listen before hearing her heartbeat.

'What are you looking for Shanty?' I asked folding my hands on my chest and looking at her with a deep frown.

'You scared me, Ian. Aren't you supposed to return later in the evening?' Shanty asked instead of answering my question.

'I changed my mind and decided to come home instead of following the others. Now to my question, what are you looking for?'

'Won't the golden wolf be mad at you for ditching her and the others?'

'That doesn't answer my question, Shanty. Why is the room in such a condition?' I asked with some hint of anger. Why was she trying to change the topic?

'I am sorry that you met the room like this,' Shanty said pouting.

'You are yet to answer my question,' I said. Letting her know I wasn't letting go of my first question.

'Grandma Gina gave me an earring. I don't know where I placed it. I wrapped them in a handkerchief. I can't seem to find it anywhere,' Shanty said looking distraught.

'I can't remember you told me that Grandma Gina gave you anything like that.'

'Oh! I must have forgotten to tell you.'

'Why is it so important for you to find the earrings?' I asked raising a brow.

'Grandma Gina gave it to me. It would be so ungrateful of me to tell her that I lost them,' Shanty said sounding very annoying to my ears.

'We are in the middle of getting prepared for a war Shanty. You think Grandma Gina will notice if you are wearing an earring she gave you or not?'

'She might notice,' Shanty said coyly.

'When did you become this frivolous?' I asked, my voice growing louder.

'I am...'

'You know what, I will be going outside now. I will give you ten minutes to get this place back to order and stop being childish,' I said not allowing her to say whatever she wanted to say before I barged out of the room.

Something kept nagging at me that Shanty wasn't telling me the truth. I might just have to sleep with one eye closed around Shanty for the time being because I was starting to distrust her.
