Chapter 176 Chest Pain

Chapter 176 Chest Pain
Maureen's POV

'They are fifteen minutes away from us,' Ian said, sweating profusely. He had run back to us from spying on the approaching council entourage.

'Who are those leading the war?' Dad asked. Dad and the Alpha had refused to back down from the battle.

The Alpha had insisted saying it was his pack and he must fight to protect it. I understood his points so none of us argued with him. The traitors had declared war on his pack and he had to defend his honour.

'Rogues are leading the battle,' Ian snorted.

'That is very manly of the new president. Rogues are leading the battle for the wolf council,' Lucia said bitterly.

'Since he isn't a mere male, why is he not leading the battle against a mere female?' Dawn said hissing.

'It is good that he will be eating his words soon enough. Get everyone ready general. They will soon be on us,' the Alpha said, addressing one of the High Moon's generals.

All the golden wolf soldiers were ready. They had been standing since we got to the place we picked to fight. They were all shirtless with their bodies glittering with sweat from the anxiety.

I wouldn't deny the fact that I was anxious. I had tried looking into the compass to see what the result of the battle might be but I saw nothing. I had to check several times if something was wrong with the compass.

I had called Lance's attention to it. Lance had simply said that the compass might have done what was required of it and had stopped working.

While I slept the previous night, I had hoped that the moon goddess would come to me and give me insight into what I was supposed to do or not do, but it never happened; she didn't come to me.

'The new president called me last night asking me to surrender to him, and he will consider sparing my life and my family,' the Alpha said as if something bitter was in his mouth. What he said brought my mind to the present.

'What? Is he crazy? He must think highly of himself,' Dominus said with anger.

'He said he heard the Luna was pregnant, and he wouldn't want her to be turned into pieces by his soldiers and the pup inside her killed in that instance,' the Alpha said, visibly shaking with anger.

'Why didn't you tell us all this before we left the house?' Dominus asked.

'I didn't tell you until this hour so that you all can know that we are not just fighting to protect the honors of High Moon or to make sure we sit the golden wolf at the Citadel. We are also fighting to protect those who mean the world to us,' the Alpha said with his voice booming over the field.

I looked at him with pride. He was a passionate person and he loved his pack and his mate. He should be an example for every other Alpha. I vowed in my heart at that moment to personally deliver the new president into his hands.

A sudden rush of footsteps from behind us made us turn around, ready to fight. But we were surprised by the person leading them into the field.

'Alpha Antonio,' the Alpha said with a surprise.

'I know you are surprised to see me. But we are here to join you for the battle,' Alpha Antonio said, coming closer to us.

Alpha Antonio's pack shared borders with High Moon. They had done business with High Moon over the years. Antonio was the new Alpha. He took over from his father three years ago. He was a young man in his late twenties.

'I wasn't expecting this,' Alpha of High Moon said.

'You and your pack have been good to us for years. Besides, if they take over High Moon, it will affect us too. So the threat to High Moon is a threat to my pack,' he said, smiling.

'Thank you, Antonio. I am grateful,' Alpha said, returning his smile, then frowned. 'They are some minutes away from here. So we need to be ready,' the Alpha said to Alpha Antonio, and he nodded in understanding.

He came towards me and knelt on one knee before saying, ' It is a pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty. I have known about you since birth. I am glad I can behold you before I die,' Antonio said bowing his head.

'Rise, Antonio, nobody is dying here today, not in my camp,' I said, and he rose.

He had over sixty elite soldiers with him. The field was filling up. Although I knew that the golden wolf soldiers were capable of handling things but I also believed in numbers. It gets the work done faster.

The stench of rogues hit us before we heard the approaching footsteps and horse hoofs. We all stood at attention as we watched them approach.

Rocha and Ian were in the back line until Rocha's attention was needed. Ian had not sighted their fake soldiers but that doesn't take away the fact that they were not hidden somewhere.

From my estimation, the rogues were over five hundred. They were walking in a formation that surrounded the new president and Elder Mattias on house backs. Cowards, Lazy bones! They couldn't even walk or run in their wolf forms.

'Alpha Larry of High Moon. I am giving you the last chance to stand down and hand the fake golden wolf that is causing chaos in the kingdom over to me,' the new president said with arrogance dripping from his voice.

I felt like breaking his neck at that very moment. After all, what it would take was a stretch of my hand, but I was giving him to the Alpha as I had vowed in my heart.

'You are full of yourself so-called president. You dare walk into my den to ask that I will be handed over to you. You must either be very stupid or your arrogance had eaten so deeply into your senses that you can no longer see reasons,' I said through gritted teeth.

'Bow at my feet, fake golden wolf, and I will spare High Moon,' the president said, raising his nose in arrogance.

'What about this? Why not bow and turn tail right now maybe I would be able to save you from what Alpha Larry has in stock for you once he gets hold of you?' I said raising a brow.

'I guess I have been magnanimous enough as it is. I can see you are all just a bunch of unrepentant fools. It would be such a shame to see you all torn to pieces by mere rogues,' the new president said turning his horse to leave.

'And I can see that you are a mere coward. A traitor who joined hands with outsiders to betray his brother,' Torrent said breathlessly. We all gasped in surprise to see her. She must have run all the way from the Alpha house.

'Of what use is a brother to me in the face of power? You know nothing, Torrent, you are nothing but a child,' The new president said, not a bit moved by what Torrent had said.

'And you are nothing but an old fool. I will personally see to your beheading, my dear traitorous and useless uncle,' Torrent said, then cast a hateful look at Mattias. The new president's face turned sour at being called useless.

Rocha was standing transfixed as he looked at Torrent in surprise. I signaled for him to pull her to the back, away from the battle. He quickly got a hold of himself and pulled her away just before the president and the Mattias galloped on the house to a reasonable distance and then shouted for the rogues to start killing.

Like dogs without their senses in the right place anymore, they growled at us and advanced. Lucia and Dawn, at that moment, ran away from the field. They were not supposed to be there but they insisted and promised to leave the minute the battle started. I was banking on the fact that they would take Torrent with them.

The battle was fierce as the golden wolf soldiers slashed through the rogues. I stood back from them and picked the ones I could with levitation. I threw them into nearby trees, making sure to make the impact hard enough to break their necks.

Gradually, their number started dwindling, so I moved forward, trying to reach Mattias and the new president where they were to gloat.

In a short while, the rogue's number had reduced to less than two hundred; they were now surrounded by the High Moon soldiers, the golden wolf soldiers, and Antonio's soldiers. At a point, fear was in their eyes, but they knew that the only way out was to fight.

As I made my way towards Mattias and the new president, they both looked at me with fear in their eyes but I smiled at them triumphantly. I would have proceeded to where they were, but I had to stop because a High Moon soldier was on the floor breathing hard. His stomach was torn into.

I pulled him to the side and placed a hand on his stomach. I looked up when two golden wolf soldiers stood behind me. Asher must have noticed what I was about to do and I would be too distracted to notice my surroundings.

I healed the soldier, and he stood up happily to rejoin the fight, but I pulled him back, asking him to sit down and catch his breath.

As I turned around, I saw both the president and Mattias turn the horse around and gallop away as fast as they could. Some golden wolf soldiers wanted to give them a chase, but I stopped them because it suddenly dropped in my heart that they would soon be back.

I wanted to see how far the fight had gone, but I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my chest, and I doubled over. Lance was beside me in a flash.

'What is happening Maureen? 'Lance asked with concern.

'I don't know. I felt a sharp pain in my chest,' I answered, groaning.

The pain started disappearing gradually as Lance led me away from the almost-finished battle. But then a sudden feeling of panic gripped my heart. Something was wrong!
