Chapter 124 Rejection
Chapter 124 Rejection
“Who is there?” she mumbled, stretching slightly as she glanced outside the window. To her surprise, it was morning already.
“I slept for that long?” she muttered to herself, slightly surprised.
She had only decided to take a nap, she didn’t know that she would sleep for that long. The event last night had tired her out completely and shde didn’t even wake up for dinner.
Matilda probably didn’t wake her up because she felt she needed the rest and she greatly appreciated it. Because if anyone has woken her up at that moment, she might fight the person to death.
The person at the door finally replied, “It’s me, Alex.”
Hazel raised a brow and wondered to herself.
Alex? What was he doing here?
Hazel checked herself and realized that she was not presentable and could not go out like this, so she said, “Can you give me a few minutes to clean up?”
Alex had no problems with her, he was the one who arrived too early, so he had no problems waiting for her.
“It’s no problem. Take your time.”
Hazel flung the covers to the side and walked into the bathhouse. She took the fastest bath and quickly dressed up.
She did not even bother drying her hair as she went to open the door for Alex.
“Good morning, Alex.” Hazel greeted.
She hesitated whether to invite him in or not, but inwardly, she actually didn’t want to let him in.
“You didn’t dry your hair, aren’t you afraid of catching a flu?” He asked, concerned.
Seeing his demeanor, Hazel knew that Alex might want to have some sort of a discussion with her and considering that she also wanted to make things clear with him, she stepped aside.
“Come in.”
After Alex entered, Hazel peeked out of the chamber to check for any signs of people and when she found none, she heaved in relief.
Alex saw her actions and a bitter smile spread across his face.
“Are you really that afraid of people seeing us together? At least, a little misunderstanding won’t hurt.” He said and Hazel closed the door.
“Rumors spread faster than the truth. I’m sure it will reach Damien in no time if people see us together and that brute won’t even listen to any explanation before he arrives at a conclusion and starts fuming.” Hazel said, a hint of tender affection flashing in her eyes.
She didn’t notice actually, that whenever she speaks about Damien, her eyes and entire being would lit up. She was never like that when she is with Alex or any other person and when she is with Damien, no other man can enter her eyes.
Alex had noticed this, but thought he was thinking too much. Now, he realized that he had not been thinking too much, Hazel's feelings for Damien were deeper than he had thought.
Alex lowered his head, hiding the brief look of defeat in his eyes. He knew he was losing the battle even before it even began.
“Wjat brings you here?” Hazel finally asked.
Alex pushed aside his distracting thoughts and put on a smile, “I’m here for two reasons. The first reason is to check on you and ask about your injuries.”
Hazel nodded, “Well, I’m all good. The injuries had healed on their own, they were not really much.”
Alex nodded and fell silent.
Hazel glanced at him and took the initiative to ask, “What is the second reason?”
“I wanted to know if you will be able to visit the training grounds with me. We could have a spar or watch other warriors duel, it’s all on you.” Alex said.
Hazel didn’t reply for a while, but she already made up her mind. There would definitely be a lot of people at the training grounds, and if they see her together with Alex, rumors would spread.
Secondly, if she continues to follow Alex out, he would think that he might have a chance with her and Hazel didn’t want to hurt his feelings because he’s a good man.
So she said, “I don’t think I want to go anywhere today. I would like to remain in my chambers.”
Alex fell silent.
He wasn’t stupid and he knew what Hazel was trying to do. She was trying to draw a line between them.
“Actually, I have something to tell you.” Hazel suddenly added and Alex’s heart slipped slightly. He wanted to stop her, but she was faster. “Alex, this can not work. My feelings for Damien aren’t as shallow as you think and even I can not understand why it is like that after all he has done for me. It’s not like you said, my feelings for him can not change and I can’t give you high hopes that things will work between us.”
Alex didn’t say anything for more than a minute.
“Don’t I have just a small chance?”
Hazel felt guilty to do this, but she had no choice.
“I’m afraid not. You are a good man, and I will be committing a crime by making you stay when I know I can’t give you what you want. You will find someone else, someone better and someone who can reciprocate your feelings but it’s not me.” She answered.
Alex gave a bitter smile, “My love life was ruined before it even started.”
“I’m sorry.” She whispered, but he shook his head.
“Can I get at least a hug, the first and last one from you?” Alex asked. He knew he was making a difficult request, but he could not help it.
Hazel hesitated for a second, but still nodded.
Alex stepped closer and embraced her. It was just a simple hug, and he didn’t cross any boundaries like the gentleman he was.
After the hug, he said nothing more and reached for the door. But as he stepped out, he came face-to-face with Damien, whose expression was very bad.
Neither of them spoke.
When Hazel saw Damien, she felt an incoming headache.
